And he gathered unto him the sons of Ammon and of Amalek and went and smote Israel and took the city of palm trees.

And the battle went heavily against Saul, and the archers found him, and he was sore afraid of the archers.

And the messenger answered and said, Israel fled before the Philistines, and there has been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God was taken.

So about three thousand men of the people went up there; and they fled before the men of Ai.

And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel; and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines, who slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.

And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, The people fled from the battle, and many of the people fell and are dead, and Saul and Jonathan, his son, are dead also.
