Persevere in prayer, and be watchful in the same with thanksgiving;

Blessed are those servants whom their lord, when he comes, shall find watching. Verily I say to you, That he will gird himself and make them recline at table, and will come forth and serve them. And if he shall come in the second watch, and if he shall come in the third watch, and find them thus, blessed are those servants.

Therefore, let us not sleep, as do others, but let us watch and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep in the night; and those who are drunken, are drunken in the night. But let us, who are of the day, be sober, having on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet, the hope of salvation:

Be sober, be watchful: for your adversary, the devil, like a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour.
