Persevere in prayer, watching therein with thanksgiving;

Happy are those servants, whom their lord, when coming, shall find watching! Verily I say to you, that he will gird himself, and make them recline; and, coming near, he will serve them. And, if he shall come in the second watch, and if in the third, and find them so, happy are they!

So, then, let us not sleep as do the rest, but let us watch and be sober. For those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunken are drunken at night. But let us, being of the day, be sober, having put on a breast-plate of faith and love; and, as a helmet, a hope of salvation;
