For every one of the house of Israel, or of the stranger who lives in Israel, who separates himself from Me and sets up his idols in his heart, and puts the stumbling-block of his iniquity before his face, and comes to a prophet to ask of him concerning Me; I Jehovah will answer him Myself. And I will set My face against that man, and I will make him desolate for a sign and for proverbs. And I will cut him off from the midst of My people; and you shall know that I am Jehovah.

He has made me also a byword of the peoples; and I am one in whose face they spit.

And now I am their song; yea, I am their byword.

And you shall become an astonishment, a proverb, and a by-word among all nations where Jehovah shall lead you.

If you shall at all turn from following Me, you or your sons, and will not keep My commandments and My statutes which I have set before you, but go and serve other gods and worship them, then I will cut off Israel from the face of the land which I have given them. And this house which I have made holy for My name I will cast out of My sight. And Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all people. As to this house which is exalted, everyone who passes by it shall be amazed and shall hiss. And they shall say, Why has Jehovah done this to this land and to this house?read more.
And they shall answer, Because they left Jehovah their God who brought out their fathers from the land of Egypt, and have taken hold on other gods and have worshiped them and served them. On account of this Jehovah has brought on them all this evil.

But if you turn away and forsake My statutes and My commandments which I have set before you, and if you shall go and serve other gods and worship them, then I will pluck them up by the roots out of My land which I have given them. And this house which I have sanctified for My name, I will cast out of My sight, and I will make it to be a proverb and a byword among all nations. And this house, which is high, shall be a wonder to everyone who passes by it, so that they shall shudder and say, Why has Jehovah done this to this land and to this house?read more.
And it shall be answered, Because they forsook Jehovah, the God of their fathers who brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, and laid hold on other gods and worshiped them and served them. Therefore He has brought all this evil on them.

And like the bad figs, which cannot be eaten, they are so bad; surely so says Jehovah, So I will give to Zedekiah the king of Judah, and his rulers, and the rest of Jerusalem who remain in this land, and those who dwell in the land of Egypt; and I will even make them a horror for evil to all the kingdoms of the earth, for a reproach and a proverb, a gibe and a curse, there in all places where I shall drive them. And I will send the sword, the famine, and the plague among them until they are destroyed from the land that I gave to them and to their fathers.

Let the priests, the ministers of Jehovah, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Have pity on Your people, O Jehovah, and give not Your inheritance to shame, for a proverb among those of the nations. Why should they say among the people, Where is their God?

Now You have cast us off, and have shamed us, and You do not go forth with our armies. You make us turn back from the adversary; and our haters plunder for themselves. You have given us like sheep for food, and have scattered us among the nations.read more.
You have sold Your people for nothing, and You did not increase by their price. You make us a curse to our neighbors, a scorn and a mockery to those who are round about us. You make us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the people. My shame is always before me, and the shame of my face has covered me: because of the voice of the slanderer and the blasphemer; before the enemy and avenger. All this has come on us; yet we have not forgotten You nor dealt falsely in Your covenant. Our heart is not turned back, nor have our steps turned aside from Your way, though You have crushed us in the place of jackals and covered us with the shadow of death. If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god, shall not God search this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart. Yea, for Your sake we are put to death all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. Awaken! Why do You sleep, O Jehovah? Arise! Do not cast us off forever. Why do You hide Your face, and forget our affliction and distress? For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our belly holds fast to the earth. Arise for our help, and redeem us for the sake of Your mercy.
