Jesus responded, “I assure you: Everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.
Then they may come to their senses and escape the Devil’s trap, having been captured by him to do his will.
They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption, since people are enslaved to whatever defeats them.
and every high-minded thing that is raised up against the knowledge of God, taking every thought captive to obey Christ.

to be a covenant for the people

This issue arose because of false brothers smuggled in, who came in secretly to spy on the freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, in order to enslave us. But we did not give up and submit to these people for even an hour, so that the truth of the gospel would be preserved for you.
Christ has liberated us to be free. Stand firm then and don’t submit again to a yoke of slavery.
For it says:
When He ascended on high,
He took prisoners into captivity;
He gave gifts to people.
You ascended to the heights, taking away captives;
You received gifts from people,
even from the rebellious,
so that the Lord God might live there.
