I have written somewhat to the church; but Diotrephes, who love to take the lead among them, does not receive me. Do them when I come I will recall to mind the deeds which he is doing, prating against me with wicked words. Not satisfied with that, he refuses to receive the brothers, forbids those that would receive them, and excommunicates them from the church.
Let no one deceive you by any means. Now for some time a man named Simon had been practicing sorcery in that city, and had amazed the people of Samaria. He gave himself out to be some great person. Many from all classes would give heed to him, declaring, "This man is the Power of God, known as the Great Power." They were giving heed to him because, for a long time, he had amazed them with his sorceries.
So on the appointed day, Herod put on his royal robes, and after taking his seat upon the throne, began to harangue them. "The voice of a god, and not of a man," the people kept shouting. Instantly an angel of the Lord smote him, because he had not given God the glory, and being eaten up by worms, he died.
