The God of this people Israel selected our fathers, and exalted the people during their abode in the land of Egypt, and with a mighty arm brought he them out of it. And about the space of forty years he bore with their behaviour in the wilderness. And destroying seven nations in the land of Canaan, he distributed their territory to them by lot.

Now it is not supposable that the word of God hath failed. For these are not all Israel, who are of Israel: nor, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, in Isaac shall thy seed be called. That is, not the children of the flesh, these are the children of God: but the children of the promise are accounted for the seed.

What then is the result? Israel hath not obtained that which it seeketh; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded, as it is written, "God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear; unto this present day."
