And then He said to them, "Be ever on the alert and always on your guard against every form of greed, because a man's life does not consist in his possessions, even though they are abundant."
No one can be a slave to two masters, for either he will hate one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot be slaves of God and money.
Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, "How hard it will be for those who have money to get into the kingdom of God!" His disciples were startled at this statement. But Jesus again said to them as He continued the topic, "My children, how hard it is to get into the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye than for a rich man to get into the kingdom of God."
What causes wars and quarrels among you? Is it not your different desires which are ever at war within your bodies? You desire things and cannot have them, and so you commit murder. You covet things, but cannot acquire them, and so you quarrel and fight. You do not have them, because you do not ask for them.
Sell your property and give to charity. Provide for yourselves purses that will never wear out, riches that never fail in heaven, where a thief cannot come near nor a moth destroy, For wherever your treasure is, there too your heart will be.
I know how to live in lowly circumstances and I know how to live in plenty. I have learned the secret, in all circumstances, of either getting a full meal or of going hungry, of living in plenty or being in want. I can do anything through Him who gives me strength.
"A curse on you, you hypocritical scribes and Pharisees! For you pay tithes on mint and dill and cummin, and yet leave out the more vital matters of the law, justice, love and fidelity. These latter especially you ought to have done, but ought not to have left out the former.
But as your first duty keep on looking for His standard of doing right, and for His will, and then all these things will be yours besides.
Pay all of them what is due them -- tribute to the officer to receive it, taxes to the officer to receive them, respect to the man entitled to it, and honor to the man entitled to it. Stop owing anybody anything, except the obligation to love one another, for whoever practices loving others has perfectly satisfied the law.
