Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get you out of your country, and from your kindred, and from your father's house, unto a land that I will show you: And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless you, and curse him that curses you: and in you shall all families of the earth be blessed.
That in blessing I will bless you, and in multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies;
Now to Abraham and his descendant were the promises made. He says not, And to descendants, as of many; but as of one, And to your descendant, who is Christ.
For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his descendants, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.
But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the free woman was by promise.
And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers:
Who are Israelites; to whom pertains the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;
Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers:
And he gave him no inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his descendants after him, when as yet he had no child.
But when the time of the promise drew near, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,
For if they who are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:
Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the descendant should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.
Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.
But the scripture has consigned all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
So God, willing more abundantly to show unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:
But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises.
By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.
By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son.
That is, They who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the descendants.
That the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:
