He opened the long shaft of the Abyss (the bottomless pit), and smoke like the smoke of a huge furnace puffed out of the long shaft, so that the sun and the atmosphere were darkened by the smoke from the long shaft.

He drew me up out of a horrible pit [a pit of tumult and of destruction], out of the miry clay (froth and slime), and set my feet upon a rock, steadying my steps and establishing my goings.

If a man leaves a pit open or digs a pit and does not cover it and an ox or a donkey falls into it,

Now on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been removed from (lifted out of the groove across the entrance of) the tomb.

And they said to one another, Who will roll back the stone for us out of [the groove across the floor at] the door of the tomb? And when they looked up, they [distinctly] saw that the stone was already rolled back, for it was very large.

And they found the stone rolled back from the tomb,

The tombs were opened and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep in death were raised [to life];
