I will therefore chastise him and release him." But they all cried out together, "Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas" a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder. Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate addressed to them again. But they shouted, "Crucify him, crucify him!" Then he said to them the third time, "Why, what evil has he done? I have found in him no crime deserving death. I will therefore chastise him and release him." But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that he be crucified. And their voices prevailed. So Pilate gave sentence that their demand should be granted. And he released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for; but Jesus he delivered up to their will. Pilate said to him, "You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you, and power to crucify you?" Jesus answered, "You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered me to you has the greater sin." From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, "If you let this man go, you are not Caesar's friend. Anyone who makes himself a king sets himself against Caesar." When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
