For by grace ye have been saved through faith: and this, not of yourselves, it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any one should boast;
Where, then, is the boasting? It was excluded. By what manner of law? Of works? Nay; but by a law of faith.
But it could not be that I should glory, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has become crucified to me, and I to the world.
For, if Abraham was justified by works, he has ground of boasting, but not toward God. For what does the Scripture say? "And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him for righteousness." Now to him that works the reward is not reckoned as of grace, but as of debt;
But, if by grace, it is no longer of works; otherwise the grace becomes no longer grace. [But, if of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise, the work is no longer work.]
