It came to pass in those days, a decree went out from Augustus Caesar, to enroll all the world.
And they having come into Capernaum, those receiving the double drachma came to Peter, and said, Does your teacher pay the double drachma? He says, Yes. And when he came into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, What seems to you, Simon? from whom do the kings of the earth receive toll or tribute? from their own sons or aliens? And he saying from aliens, Jesus said to him, Then the sons are free.
And all the multitude of them rising up, lead Him to Pilate. And they began to accuse Him, saying, We found Him perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that He is Christ, a King.

But in order that we may not offend them, going to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the first fish coming up; and opening its mouth, you will find a stater: having received it, give it to them for me and thee.
Then the Pharisees going forth, took counsel how they might ensnare Him in His speech. And they send to Him their own disciples along with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, we know that thou art true, and that thou art teaching the way of God in truth, and there is not a care to thee for any one; for thou dost not look into the face of men. Then tell us, what seems good to thee? is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?read more.
And Jesus knowing their wickedness, said, Why tempt ye me, O ye hypocrites? Show me the tribute money: and they brought Him a denarion. And He says to them, Whose is this image and superscription? They say to Him, Caesar's. Then He says to them, Therefore render Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things which are God's. And hearing they are astonished, and leaving Him, they went away.
And they send to Him certain ones of the Pharisees and Herodians, that they may catch Him with speech. And they having come, say to Him, Teacher, we know that thou art true, and there is not a care to thee for any one: for thou dost not look into the face of men, but thou dost teach the way of God in truth: is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not? must we give, or must we not give? And knowing their hypocrisy, He said to them, Why tempt ye me? Bring to me the denarion, that I may see it.read more.
And they brought it. And He says to them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they say to Him, Caesar's. And Jesus responding said to them, Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and unto God the things which are God's. And they were astonished at Him.
And laying in wait for Him, they sent sharpers, feigning themselves to be righteous, that they might catch his word, in order to turn Him over to the government and authority of the proconsul. They asked Him saying, Teacher, we know that thou dost speak and teach correctly; and thou dost not receive the face; but thou dost teach the way of God in truth: is it lawful for us give tribute to Caesar, or not?read more.
And He knowing their rascality, said to them, Why tempt ye me? Show me the denarion. Whose image and superscription has it? And they responding said, Caesar's. And He said to them, Therefore render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and unto God the things which are God's. And they were not able to criticise His word before the people: and being astonished at His answer, they were silent.
Let every soul be subject to the higher authorities. For there is no authority except that which is from God; and the existing authorities have been ordained of God.
Submit to every human creature for the sake of the Lord: whether to the king as supereminent,
For rulers are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. Whether do you not wish to fear the authority? do the good, and you shall have praise from it:
because thus it is the will of God, that doing good you should put to shame the ignorance of the ignorant people:
Give to all their dues: custom to whom custom is due; tribute to whom tribute is due; fear to whom fear is due; honor to whom honor is due.
