and his disciples propos'd to him this question, master, was it for his own sins, or for the sins of his parents, that he was born blind?
the governor said, why, what mischief has he done? but they cried out the more, let him be crucified.
Pilate replied, why, what harm has he done? but they cried out more furiously, crucify him.
however he urg'd it a third time, why, what crime has he done? I don't find he has done any thing that deserves death: I will therefore order him to be whipp'd, and so dismiss him.

If I have degraded myself for your advantage by preaching the holy gospel to you gratis, is that such a trespass?
the most considerable, said he, among you may go with me, and if he has committed any crime, let 'em begin the process.
