'Misfortune' in the Bible
“He has not observed misfortune in Jacob;Nor has He seen trouble in Israel; The Lord his God is with him,And the shout of a king is among them.
But now the Lord my God has given me rest on every side; there is neither adversary nor misfortune.
Then he went in to his wife, and she conceived and bore a son, and he named him Beriah, because misfortune had come upon his house.
They have lied about the LordAnd said, “Not He;Misfortune will not come on us,And we will not see sword or famine.
Now therefore amend your ways and your deeds and obey the voice of the Lord your God; and the Lord will change His mind about the misfortune which He has pronounced against you.
Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him to death? Did he not fear the Lord and entreat the favor of the Lord, and the Lord changed His mind about the misfortune which He had pronounced against them? But we are committing a great evil against ourselves.”
But rather we will certainly carry out every word that has proceeded from our mouths, by burning sacrifices to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, just as we ourselves, our forefathers, our kings and our princes did in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; for then we had plenty of food and were well off and saw no misfortune.
“Do not gloat over your brother’s day,The day of his misfortune. And do not rejoice over the sons of JudahIn the day of their destruction;Yes, do not boastIn the day of their distress.
