1 “When a man takes a wife and marries her, and it happens (a)that she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some (A)indecency in her, and (B)he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out from his house,
1 When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house.
1 “If a man marries a woman, but she becomes displeasing to him because he finds something improper about her, he may write her a divorce certificate, hand it to her, and send her away from his house.(A)
1 "If a man chooses to enter into marriage with a woman, but she finds herself displeasing to him because he has found something objectionable about her, he must draw up divorce papers, hand them to her, and then send her out of his house.
2 and she leaves his house and goes and becomes another man’s wife,
2 And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's wife.
2 If after leaving his house she goes and becomes another man’s wife,
2 If she goes out from his house, becomes the wife of another man,
2 and after she leaves his house, she goes and becomes another man’s wife,
3 and if the latter husband (b)turns against her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter husband dies who took her to be his wife,
3 And if the latter husband hate her, and write her a bill of divorcement, and giveth it in her hand, and sendeth her out of his house; or if the latter husband die, which took her to be his wife;
3 and the second man hates her, writes her a divorce certificate, hands it to her, and sends her away from his house or if he(a) dies,
3 and this second husband dislikes her, he, also, must draw up divorce papers, hand them to her, and then send her away from his house. Should the second husband die,
4 then her (C)former husband who sent her away is not allowed to take her again to be his wife, since she has been defiled; for that is an abomination before the Lord, and you shall not bring sin on the land which the Lord your God gives you as an inheritance.
4 Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that is abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.
4 the first husband who sent her away may not marry her again after she has been defiled, because that would be detestable to the Lord. You must not bring guilt on the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.(B)
4 her first husband who married her and divorced her earlier must not remarry her, because she was defiled, since this is detestable to the LORD. Don't defile the land that the LORD your God is about to give you as a possession.
4 then her former husband who [first] sent her away may not take her again as his wife, since she has been defiled; for that is an outrage before the Lord, and you shall not bring sin on the land which the Lord your God gives you as an inheritance.
5 “(D)When a man takes a new wife, he shall not go out with the army nor be charged with any duty; he shall be free at home one year and shall (E)give happiness to his wife whom he has taken.
5 When a man hath taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war, neither shall he be charged with any business: but he shall be free at home one year, and shall cheer up his wife which he hath taken.
5 “When a man takes a bride, he must not go out with the army or be liable for any duty. He is free to stay at home for one year, so that he can bring joy to the wife he has married.
5 "When a man is newly married, he must not be sent out to war or have a related duty placed on him. Let him stay home for one year and be happy with his wife whom he has married.
5 “When a man takes a new wife, he shall not go out [to fight] with the army nor be charged with any duty; he shall be free at home for one year and shall bring happiness to his wife whom he has taken.
6 “No one shall take a handmill or an upper millstone in pledge, for he would be taking a life in pledge.
6 No man shall take the nether or the upper millstone to pledge: for he taketh a man's life to pledge.
6 “Do not take a pair of millstones or an upper millstone as security for a debt, because that is like taking a life as security.
6 "Don't take a pair of millstones, especially the upper millstone, as collateral for a loan, because this means taking a man's livelihood.
6 “No one shall take a handmill or an upper millstone [used to grind grain into bread] as security [for a debt], for he would be taking a [person’s] life in pledge.
7 “(F)If a man is (c)caught kidnapping any of his (d)countrymen of the sons of Israel, and he deals with him violently or sells him, then that thief shall die; so you shall purge the evil from among you.
7 If a man be found stealing any of his brethren of the children of Israel, and maketh merchandise of him, or selleth him; then that thief shall die; and thou shalt put evil away from among you.
7 “If a man is discovered kidnapping(C) one of his Israelite brothers, whether he treats him as a slave or sells him, the kidnapper must die. You must purge the evil from you.
7 "If a man is found kidnapping his relative, a fellow Israeli, and mistreats or sells him, that kidnapper must die. By doing this, you will remove this evil from among you.
7 “If a man is caught kidnapping any of his countrymen from the sons of Israel, and he treats him violently or sells him [as a slave], then that thief shall die. So you shall remove the evil from among you.
8 “(G)Be careful against (e)an infection of leprosy, that you diligently observe and do according to all that the Levitical priests teach you; as I have commanded them, so you shall be careful to do.
8 Take heed in the plague of leprosy, that thou observe diligently, and do according to all that the priests the Levites shall teach you: as I commanded them, so ye shall observe to do.
8 “Be careful in a case of infectious skin disease, following carefully everything the Levitical priests instruct you to do. Be careful to do as I have commanded them.
8 "In cases of leprosy, be very careful to observe exactly what the Levitical priests instructed you. Carefully follow what I have commanded them.
10 “(I)When you make your neighbor a loan of any sort, you shall not enter his house to take his pledge.
10 When thou dost lend thy brother any thing, thou shalt not go into his house to fetch his pledge.
10 “When you make a loan of any kind to your neighbor, do not enter his house to collect what he offers as security.
10 "When you loan something to your neighbor, don't enter his house to seize what he offered as collateral.
10 “When you lend your neighbor anything, you shall not go into his house to get his pledge (security deposit).
11 You shall remain outside, and the man to whom you make the loan shall bring the pledge out to you.
11 Thou shalt stand abroad, and the man to whom thou dost lend shall bring out the pledge abroad unto thee.
11 You must stand outside while the man you are making the loan to brings the security out to you.
11 Stay outside and let the man to whom you made the loan bring it out to you.
11 You shall stand outside, and the man to whom you lend shall bring the pledge out to you.
13 (J)When the sun goes down you shall surely return the pledge to him, that he may sleep in his cloak and bless you; and (K)it will be righteousness for you before the Lord your God.
13 In any case thou shalt deliver him the pledge again when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own raiment, and bless thee: and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the LORD thy God.
13 Be sure to return it(b) to him at sunset. Then he will sleep in it and bless you, and this will be counted as righteousness to you before the Lord your God.(E)
13 Be sure to return his garment to him at sunset so that he may sleep with it, and he will bless you. It will be a righteous deed in the presence of the LORD your God.
13 You shall certainly restore the pledge (security deposit) to him at sunset, so that he may sleep in his garment and bless you; and it will be credited to you as righteousness (right standing) before the Lord your God.
14 “(L)You shall not oppress a hired servant who is poor and needy, whether he is one of your (f)countrymen or one of your aliens who is in your land in your (g)towns.
14 Thou shalt not oppress an hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of thy brethren, or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates:
14 “Do not oppress a hired hand who is poor and needy, whether one of your brothers or one of the foreigners residing within a town(c) in your land.
14 Don't take advantage of a hired person who is poor and needy, whether he's your fellow citizen or a foreigner who lives in your city.
14 “You shall not take advantage of a hired servant who is poor and needy, whether [he is] one of your countrymen or one of the strangers (resident aliens, foreigners) who is in your land inside your cities.
15 (M)You shall give him his wages on his day (h)before the sun sets, for he is poor and sets his (i)heart on it; so that (N)he will not cry against you to the Lord and it become sin in you.
15 At his day thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the LORD, and it be sin unto thee.
15 You are to pay him his wages each day before the sun sets, because he is poor and depends on them.(F) Otherwise he will cry out to the Lord against you, and you will be held guilty.
15 Pay his wages that same day before the sun sets, because he is poor and his livelihood depends on it. Otherwise, he may cry out to the LORD against you, and you will incur guilt."
16 “(O)Fathers shall not be put to death (j)for their sons, nor shall sons be put to death (k)for their fathers; everyone shall be put to death for his own sin.
16 The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin.
16 “Fathers are not to be put to death for their children or children for their fathers; each person will be put to death for his own sin.(G)
16 "Fathers must not be put to death on account of their children's sin; nor shall children die on account of their fathers' sin. Each person is to be put to death for his own sin.
16 “The fathers shall not be put to death for [the sins of] their children, nor shall the children be put to death for their fathers; [only] for his own sin shall anyone be put to death.
17 “(P)You shall not pervert the justice (l)due an alien or (m)an orphan, nor (Q)take a widow’s garment in pledge.
17 Thou shalt not pervert the judgment of the stranger, nor of the fatherless; nor take a widow's raiment to pledge:
17 Do not deny justice to a foreigner or fatherless child, and do not take a widow’s garment as security.
17 "Don't deny justice to a foreigner or to an orphan, nor take a widow's garment as collateral for a loan.
17 “You shall not pervert the justice due a stranger or an orphan, nor seize (impound) a widow’s garment as security [for a loan].
18 But you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and that the Lord your God redeemed you from there; therefore I am commanding you to do this thing.
18 But thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee thence: therefore I command thee to do this thing.
18 Remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and the Lord your God redeemed(H) you from there. Therefore I am commanding you to do this.(I)
18 Remember to observe this because you were slaves in Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you from there. That is why I am commanding you to do this.
18 But you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and the Lord your God redeemed you from there; therefore I am commanding you to do this thing.
19 “(R)When you reap your harvest in your field and have forgotten a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it; it shall be (S)for the alien, for the (n)orphan, and for the widow, in order that the Lord your God (T)may bless you in all the work of your hands.
19 When thou cuttest down thine harvest in thy field, and hast forgot a sheaf in the field, thou shalt not go again to fetch it: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow: that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hands.
19 “When you reap the harvest in your field, and you forget a sheaf in the field, do not go back to get it. It is to be left for the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow, so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.(J)
19 "When you are reaping in the field, and you overlook a sheaf, don't return to get it. Let it remain for the foreigner, the orphan, or the widow, in order that the LORD your God may bless everything you undertake.
20 (U)When you beat your olive tree, you shall not go over the boughs (o)again; it shall be (V)for the alien, for the (p)orphan, and for the widow.
20 When thou beatest thine olive tree, thou shalt not go over the boughs again: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.
20 When you knock down the fruit from your olive tree, you must not go over the branches again. What remains will be for the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow.
20 When you harvest the olives from your trees, don't go back to the branches a second time. What remains is for the foreigner, the orphan, or the widow.
20 When you beat [the olives off of] your olive tree, do not search through the branches again; [whatever is left] shall be for the stranger, for the orphan, and for the widow.
21 “When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not (q)go over it again; it shall be for the alien, for the (r)orphan, and for the widow.
21 When thou gatherest the grapes of thy vineyard, thou shalt not glean it afterward: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.
21 When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you must not glean what is left. What remains will be for the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow.
21 When you harvest the grapes in your vineyard, don't go back a second time. What remains are for the foreigner, the orphan, or the widow.
21 “When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not glean it afterward; it shall be for the stranger, for the orphan, and for the widow.
22 You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore I am commanding you to do this thing.
22 And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt: therefore I command thee to do this thing.
22 Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt. Therefore I am commanding you to do this.(K)
22 Remember to do this because you were slaves in the land of Egypt. That is why I'm commanding you to do this."
22 You shall [thoughtfully] remember [the fact] that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore I am commanding you to do this thing.
