Isaiah 3

Leaders Of Judah And Jerusalem

1 For behold, the Lord GOD of hosts is going to remove from Jerusalem and Judah Both supply and support, the whole supply of bread And the whole supply of water;

1 For, behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, doth take away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water,

1 "Note this! The Lord GOD of the Heavenly Armies is taking away from Jerusalem and Judah everything that your society needs all food supplies and all water supplies,

1 For behold, the Lord, the Lord of hosts, is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stay and the staff [every kind of prop], the whole stay of bread and the whole stay of water,

2 The mighty man and the warrior, The judge and the prophet, The diviner and the elder,

2 The mighty man, and the man of war, the judge, and the prophet, and the prudent, and the ancient,

2 the mighty man and the warrior, the judge and the prophet, the fortune-teller and the elder,

2 The mighty man and the man of war, the judge and the [professional] prophet, the one who foretells by divination and the old man,

3 The captain of fifty and the honorable man, The counselor and the expert artisan, And the skillful enchanter.

3 The captain of fifty, and the honourable man, and the counseller, and the cunning artificer, and the eloquent orator.

3 the commander of fifty and the man of rank, and the counselor, the expert magician, and the medium.

3 The captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor and the expert craftsman and the skillful enchanter.

4 And I will make mere lads their princes, And capricious children will rule over them,

4 And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them.

4 "I will make youths their princes, and infants will rule over them.

4 And I will make boys their princes, and with childishness shall they rule over them [with outrage instead of justice].

5 And the people will be oppressed, Each one by another, and each one by his neighbor; The youth will storm against the elder And the inferior against the honorable.

5 And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable.

5 People will oppress one another It will be man against man and neighbor against neighbor. The young will be disrespectful to the old, and the worthless to the honorable.

5 And the people shall be oppressed, each one by another, and each one by his neighbor; the child shall behave himself proudly and with insolence against the old man, and the lowborn against the honorable [person of rank].

6 When a man lays hold of his brother in his father's house, saying, "You have a cloak, you shall be our ruler, And these ruins will be under your charge,"

6 When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying, Thou hast clothing, be thou our ruler, and let this ruin be under thy hand:

6 "For a man will grab his brother in his own father's house, and say, "You have a cloak, so you be our leader, and this heap of ruins will be under your rule!'

6 When a man shall take hold of his brother in the house of his father, saying, You have a robe, you shall be our judge and ruler, and this heap of ruins shall be under your control -- "

7 He will protest on that day, saying, "I will not be your healer, For in my house there is neither bread nor cloak; You should not appoint me ruler of the people."

7 In that day shall he swear, saying, I will not be an healer; for in my house is neither bread nor clothing: make me not a ruler of the people.

7 "But at that time, he'll protest! He'll say, "I won't be your healer. I have neither food nor clothing in my house! You're not going to make me a leader of the people!'

7 In that day he will answer, saying, I will not be a healer and one who binds up; I am not a physician. For in my house is neither bread nor clothing; you shall not make me judge and ruler of the people.

8 For Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen, Because their speech and their actions are against the LORD, To rebel against His glorious presence.

8 For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory.

8 "For Jerusalem has stumbled, and Judah has fallen, because what they say and do opposes the LORD; they keep defying him.

8 For Jerusalem is ruined and Judah is fallen, because their speech and their deeds are against the Lord, to provoke the eyes of His glory and defy His glorious presence.

9 The expression of their faces bears witness against them, And they display their sin like Sodom; They do not even conceal it Woe to them! For they have brought evil on themselves.

9 The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.

9 "The expressions on their faces give them away. They parade their sin around like Sodom; they don't even try to hide it. How horrible it will be for them, because they have brought disaster on themselves!"

9 Their respecting of persons and showing of partiality witnesses against them; they proclaim their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! For they have brought evil [as a reward upon themselves].

10 Say to the righteous that it will go well with them, For they will eat the fruit of their actions.

10 Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings.

10 "Tell the righteous that things will go well, because they will enjoy the fruit of their actions."

10 Say to the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds.

11 Woe to the wicked! It will go badly with him, For what he deserves will be done to him.

11 Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him.

11 "How terrible it will be for the wicked! Disaster is headed their way, because what they did with their hand will be repaid to them.

11 Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with them, for what their hands have done shall be done to them.

12 O My people! Their oppressors are children, And women rule over them O My people! Those who guide you lead you astray And confuse the direction of your paths.

12 As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths.

12 "As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. My people, your leaders are misleading you they're giving you confusing directions."

12 As for My people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O My people, your leaders cause you to err, and they confuse (destroy and swallow up) the course of your paths.

The Lord Judges His People

13 The LORD arises to contend, And stands to judge the people.

13 The LORD standeth up to plead, and standeth to judge the people.

13 The LORD is taking his place to argue his case; he's standing up to judge the people.

13 The Lord stands up to contend, and stands to judge the peoples and His people.

14 The LORD enters into judgment with the elders and princes of His people, "It is you who have devoured the vineyard; The plunder of the poor is in your houses.

14 The LORD will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and the princes thereof: for ye have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses.

14 The LORD will go to court to oppose the elders and princes of his people: "You're the ones who have been devouring the vineyard, the plunder of the poor is in your own houses!

14 The Lord enters into judgment with the elders of His people and their princes: For [by your exactions and oppressions you have robbed the people and ruined the country] you have devoured the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses.

15 "What do you mean by crushing My people And grinding the face of the poor?" Declares the Lord GOD of hosts.

15 What mean ye that ye beat my people to pieces, and grind the faces of the poor? saith the Lord GOD of hosts.

15 How dare you crush my people as you grind down the face of the poor?" declares the Lord GOD of the Heavenly Armies.

15 What do you mean by crushing My people and grinding the faces of the poor? says the Lord God of hosts.

The Pride Of Jerusalem's Women

16 Moreover, the LORD said, "Because the daughters of Zion are proud And walk with heads held high and seductive eyes, And go along with mincing steps And tinkle the bangles on their feet,

16 Moreover the LORD saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet:

16 The LORD also says: "Because Zion's women are so haughty, and walk with outstretched necks, flirting with their eyes, prancing along as they walk, and making tinkling noises with their ankle bracelets,

16 Moreover, the Lord said, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with outstretched necks and with undisciplined (flirtatious and alluring) eyes, tripping along with mincing and affected gait, and making a tinkling noise with [the anklets on] their feet,

17 Therefore the Lord will afflict the scalp of the daughters of Zion with scabs, And the LORD will make their foreheads bare."

17 Therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will discover their secret parts.

17 therefore the LORD will afflict sores on the heads of Zion's women, and the LORD will expose their private parts.

17 Therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the heads of the daughters of Zion [making them bald], and the Lord will cause them to be [taken as captives and to suffer the indignity of being] stripped naked.

18 In that day the Lord will take away the beauty of their anklets, headbands, crescent ornaments,

18 In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their cauls, and their round tires like the moon,

18 "At that time, the LORD will take away the finery of the ankle bracelets, headbands, crescents,

18 In that day the Lord will take away the finery of their tinkling anklets, the caps of network, the crescent head ornaments,

19 dangling earrings, bracelets, veils,

19 The chains, and the bracelets, and the mufflers,

19 pendants, bracelets, veils,

19 The pendants, the bracelets or chains, and the spangled face veils and scarfs,

20 headdresses, ankle chains, sashes, perfume boxes, amulets,

20 The bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and the tablets, and the earrings,

20 headdresses, armlets, sashes, perfume boxes, charms,

20 The headbands, the short ankle chains [attached from one foot to the other to insure a measured gait], the sashes, the perfume boxes, the amulets or charms [suspended from the ears or neck],

21 finger rings, nose rings,

21 The rings, and nose jewels,

21 signet rings, nose rings,

21 The signet rings and nose rings,

22 festal robes, outer tunics, cloaks, money purses,

22 The changeable suits of apparel, and the mantles, and the wimples, and the crisping pins,

22 fine robes, capes, purses,

22 The festal robes, the cloaks, the stoles and shawls, and the handbags,

23 hand mirrors, undergarments, turbans and veils.

23 The glasses, and the fine linen, and the hoods, and the vails.

23 mirrors, linen garments, tiaras, and veils.

23 The hand mirrors, the fine linen [undergarments], the turbans, and the [whole body-enveloping] veils.

24 Now it will come about that instead of sweet perfume there will be putrefaction; Instead of a belt, a rope; Instead of well-set hair, a plucked-out scalp; Instead of fine clothes, a donning of sackcloth; And branding instead of beauty.

24 And it shall come to pass, that instead of sweet smell there shall be stink; and instead of a girdle a rent; and instead of well set hair baldness; and instead of a stomacher a girding of sackcloth; and burning instead of beauty.

24 "And it will come about that instead of fragrance there will be a stench; instead of a belt, a rope; instead of well-set hair, baldness; instead of a fine robe, sackcloth; and instead of beauty, shame.

24 And it shall come to pass that instead of the sweet odor of spices there shall be the stench of rottenness; and instead of a girdle, a rope; and instead of well-set hair, baldness; and instead of a rich robe, a girding of sackcloth; and searing [of captives by the scorching heat] instead of beauty.

25 Your men will fall by the sword And your mighty ones in battle.

25 Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war.

25 Your men will die violently, while your forces fall in battle

25 Your men shall fall by the sword, and your mighty men in battle.

26 And her gates will lament and mourn, And deserted she will sit on the ground.

26 And her gates shall lament and mourn; and she being desolate shall sit upon the ground.

26 and her gates lament and mourn. Ravaged, she will sit on the ground."

26 And [Jerusalem's] gates shall lament and mourn [as those who wail for the dead]; and she, being ruined and desolate, shall sit upon the ground.
