2 But Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite of the kindred of Ram, was very sore displeased at Job, that he called himself just before God.
2 But the anger of Elihu the son of Barachel the (B)Buzite, of the family of Ram burned; against Job his anger burned (C)because he justified himself (a)(D)before God.
2 Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram: against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God.
2 Then Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite(B) from the family of Ram became angry. He was angry at Job because he had justified(C) himself rather than God.
2 But then Barachel's son Elihu from Buz, one of Ram's descendants, got really angry. He was furious with Job because he had been declaring himself righteous instead of vindicating God.
3 And with Job's three friends he was angry also, because they had found no reasonable answer to overcome him.
3 And his anger burned against his three friends because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.
3 Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.
3 He was also angry at Job’s three friends because they had failed to refute him and yet had condemned him.(a)
3 Furthermore, he was furious with his three friends because they had not answered Job, but instead had condemned him.
4 Now tarried Elihu till they had ended their communication with Job: for why? They were elder than he.
4 Now Elihu had waited till Job had spoken, because they were elder than he.
4 Now Elihu had waited to speak to Job because they were all older than he.
4 Elihu waited to have a word with Job, since the others were older than he,
5 So when Elihu, the son of Barachel the Buzite, saw that these three men were not able to make Job answer, he was miscontent.
5 And when Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of the three men his anger burned.
5 When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, then his wrath was kindled.
5 But when he saw that the three men could not answer Job, he became angry.
5 but when he saw that there had been no response from those three, he got even more angry.
6 So that he gave answer himself, and said, "Considering that I am young, and ye be men of age, I was afraid, and durst not show forth my mind,
6 So Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite (c)spoke out and said,“I am young in years and you are (E)old;Therefore I was shy and afraid to tell you (d)what I think.
6 And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, I am young, and ye are very old; wherefore I was afraid, and durst not shew you mine opinion.
6 So Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite replied:I am young in years,while you are old;therefore I was timid and afraidto tell(D) you what I know.
6 Barachel's son Elihu from Buz responded and said: "I'm younger than you are. Because you're older, I was terrified to tell you what I know.
7 for I thought thus within myself: It becometh old men to speak, and the aged to teach wisdom.
7 I said, Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.
7 I thought that age should speakand maturity should teach wisdom.
7 I thought, experience should speak; abundance of years teaches wisdom.
9 Great men are not always wise, neither doth every aged man understand the thing that is lawful.
9 Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment.
9 It is not only the old who are wiseor the elderly who understand how to judge.
9 "The aged aren't always wise, nor do the elderly always understand justice.
11 For when I had waited till ye made an end of your talking, and heard your wisdom, what arguments you made in your communication;
11 “Behold, I waited for your words,I listened to your reasonings,While you (k)pondered what to say.
11 Behold, I waited for your words; I gave ear to your reasons, whilst ye searched out what to say.
11 Look, I waited for your conclusions;I listened to your insightsas you sought for words.
11 "Look! I have waited to hear your speech, so I listened to your insights while you searched for the right words to say.
12 Yea, when I had diligently pondered what ye said, I found not one of you that made any good argument against Job, or that directly could make answer unto his words,
12 “I even paid close attention to you;(l)Indeed, there was no one who refuted Job,Not one of you who answered his words.
12 Yea, I attended unto you, and, behold, there was none of you that convinced Job, or that answered his words:
12 I paid close attention to you.Yet no one proved Job wrong;not one of you refuted his arguments.
12 Indeed, I paid close attention to you all, but none of you were able to refute Job or answer his arguments convincingly.
13 lest ye should praise yourselves, to have found out wisdom: because it is God that hath cast him out, and no man.
13 Lest ye should say, We have found out wisdom: God thrusteth him down, not man.
13 So do not claim, “We have found wisdom;let God deal with him, not man.”
13 "So that you cannot claim, "We have found wisdom!' let God do the rebuking, not man;
14 Nevertheless, seeing he hath not spoken unto me, therefore will not I answer him as ye have done."
14 Now he hath not directed his words against me: neither will I answer him with your speeches.
14 But Job has not directed his argument to me,and I will not respond to him with your arguments.
14 let him not direct a rebuke toward me. I won't be responding to him with your arguments.
15 For they where so abashed that they could not make answer, nor speak one word.
15 They were amazed, they answered no more: they left off speaking.
15 Job’s friends are dismayed and can no longer answer;words have left them.
15 "Job's friends won't reason with him anymore; discouraged, words escape them.
16 "But insomuch as ye will not speak, standing still like dumb men, and making no answer:
16 When I had waited, (for they spake not, but stood still, and answered no more;)
16 Should I continue to wait now that they are silent,now that they stand there and no longer answer?
16 Shall I continue to wait, since they're no longer talking? After all, they're only standing there; they're no longer responding.
19 Behold, I am as the new wine, which hath no vent, and bursteth the new vessels in sunder.
19 “Behold, my belly is like unvented wine,Like new wineskins it is about to burst.
19 Behold, my belly is as wine which hath no vent; it is ready to burst like new bottles.
19 My insides feel like unvented wine, like it's about to burst like a new wineskin.
20 Therefore will I speak, that I may have vent: I will open my lips, and make answer.
20 “Let me speak that I may get relief;Let me open my lips and answer.
20 I will speak, that I may be refreshed: I will open my lips and answer.
20 I must speak so that I can find relief;I must open my lips and respond.
20 "Let me speak! I need relief! Let me open my lips and respond.
22 For if I would go about to please men, I know not how soon my maker would take me away.
22 “For I do not know how to flatter,Else my Maker would soon take me away.
22 For I know not to give flattering titles; in so doing my maker would soon take me away.
22 For I do not know how to give such titles;otherwise, my Maker would remove me in an instant.
22 since I don't know the first thing about how to flatter; and the one who made me would sweep me away as if I were nothing."
