The Plague Of Israel

1 And Israel remained among the acacias, - and the people began to go away unchastely unto the daughters of Moab;

1 While Israel remained at (A)Shittim, the people began (B)to play the harlot with the daughters of Moab.

1 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.

1 While Israel was staying in the Acacia Grove,(a)(A) the people began to have sexual relations with the women of Moab.

1 While Israel remained encamped in Shittim, the people began to commit sexual immorality with Moabite women,

2 who invited the people unto the sacrifices of their gods, - so the people did eat, and did bow themselves down unto their gods.

2 For (C)they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods.

2 And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.

2 The women invited them to the sacrifices for their gods, and the people ate and bowed in worship to their gods.(B)

2 who also invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods. So the people ate what they had sacrificed and then worshipped their gods.

3 Thus Israel let himself be bound unto Baal-peor, and the anger of Yahweh kindled upon Israel.

3 So (D)Israel joined themselves to (a)Baal of Peor, and the Lord was angry against Israel.

3 And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.

3 So Israel aligned itself with Baal of Peor,(C) and the Lord’s anger burned against Israel.(D)

3 The people joined the Baal-peor cult. As a result, the anger of the LORD flared up against Israel,

God's Punishment

4 And Yahweh said unto Moses - Take all the heads of the people, and crucify them unto Yahweh. in the face of the sun, - that the heat of the anger of Yahweh may turn away from Israel.

4 The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and execute them (b)in broad daylight before the Lord, (E)so that the fierce anger of the Lord may turn away from Israel.”

4 And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.

4 The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and execute(b) them in broad daylight before the Lord so that His burning anger may turn away from Israel.”

4 so the LORD told Moses, "Take all the leaders of the people and execute them in broad daylight for the LORD, so the LORD's burning anger may be withdrawn from Israel."

5 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, - Slay ye each one his men, who have let them-selves he herald unto Baal-peor.

5 So Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Each of you (F)slay his men who have joined themselves to (c)Baal of Peor.”

5 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor.

5 So Moses told Israel’s judges, “Kill each of the men who aligned themselves with Baal of Peor.”

5 Then Moses ordered the judges of Israel, "Each one of you is to execute the men in his own tribe who joined the Baal-peor cult."

Phinehas Intervenes

6 And lo! a man of the sons of Israel coming in, who brought near unto his brethren a Midianite woman, before the eyes of Moses, and before the eyes of all the assembly of the sons of Israel, when they were weeping at the entrance of the tent of meeting.

6 Then behold, one of the sons of Israel came and brought to his (d)relatives a (G)Midianite woman, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, (H)while they were weeping at the doorway of the tent of meeting.

6 And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

6 An Israelite man came bringing a Midianite woman to his relatives in the sight of Moses and the whole Israelite community while they were weeping at the entrance to the tent of meeting.

6 That very moment, one of the Israelis arrived, bringing to his brothers one of the Midianite women, right in front of Moses and the entire community of Israel, while they were weeping at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting!

7 And Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest saw it, so he rose up out of the midst of the assembly, and took a spear in his hand;

7 (I)When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he arose from the midst of the congregation and took a spear in his hand,

7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;

7 When Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, saw this, he got up from the assembly, took a spear in his hand,

7 When Eleazar's son Phinehas, grandson of Aaron the priest saw this, he jumped up from the middle of the community, grabbed a javelin in his hand,

8 and went in after the man of Israel into the pleasure-tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman, in her parts of shame, - so the plague was restrained from against the sons of Israel.

8 and he went after the man of Israel into the (e)tent and pierced both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman, through the (f)body. (J)So the plague on the sons of Israel was checked.

8 And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

8 followed the Israelite man into the tent,(c) and drove it through both the Israelite man and the woman—through her belly. Then the plague on the Israelites was stopped,

8 followed the Israeli man inside his tent, and impaled the two of them the Israeli man and the woman right through both of them and into her abdomen. Then the plague infecting the Israelis was brought to a halt. Nevertheless,

9 Then was it found that they who had died by the plague were four and twenty thousand.

9 (K)Those who died by the plague were 24,000.

9 And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.

9 but those who died in the plague numbered 24,000.(E)

9 24,000 people died because of the plague.
