1 The Beloved about Her Lover: All night long on my bed I longed for my lover. I longed for him but he never appeared.

1 By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.
1 Night after night on my bed, I sought the one I love; I sought him, but didn't find him.
2 "I will arise and look all around throughout the town, and throughout the streets and squares; I will search for my beloved." I searched for him but I did not find him.
2 ‘(b)I must arise now and (c)go about the city;In the (C)streets and in the squares(d)I must seek him whom my soul loves.’I sought him but did not find him.
2 I will rise now, and go about the city in the streets, and in the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.

3 The night watchmen found me -- the ones who guard the city walls. "Have you seen my beloved?"
3 “(D)The watchmen who make the rounds in the city found me,And I said, ‘Have you seen him whom my soul loves?’
3 The watchmen that go about the city found me: to whom I said, Saw ye him whom my soul loveth?
3 The watchmen who go all around the city found me. I asked, "Have you seen the one I love?"
4 Scarcely had I passed them by when I found my beloved! I held onto him tightly and would not let him go until I brought him to my mother's house, to the bedroom chamber of the one who conceived me.
4 “(E)Scarcely had I (e)left themWhen I found him whom my soul loves;I (F)held on to him and would not let him goUntil I had (G)brought him to my mother’s house,And into the room of her who conceived me.”
4 It was but a little that I passed from them, but I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go, until I had brought him into my mother's house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me.

5 I charge you, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, by the roes, and by the hinds of the field, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please.
5 Young women of Jerusalem, I charge youby the gazelles and the wild does of the field:do not stir up or awaken loveuntil the appropriate time.(c)(F)
5 Swear to me, young women of Jerusalem, by the gazelles or by the does of the field, that you won't awaken or arouse love before its proper time!
6 The Speaker: Who is this coming up from the desert like a column of smoke, like a fragrant billow of myrrh and frankincense, every kind of fragrant powder of the traveling merchants?
6 “(h)(i)(J)What is this coming up from the wildernessLike (K)columns of smoke,Perfumed with (L)myrrh and (M)frankincense,With all scented powders of the merchant?
6 Who is this that cometh out of the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all powders of the merchant?
6 N What is this(G) coming up from the wildernesslike columns of smoke,scented with myrrh and frankincense(H)from every fragrant powder of the merchant?
6 What is this coming up from the desert like columns of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and incense from all the fragrant powders of the merchant?
7 Look! It is Solomon's portable couch! It is surrounded by sixty warriors, some of Israel's mightiest warriors.
7 “Behold, it is the traveling couch of Solomon;Sixty mighty men around it,Of the mighty men of Israel.
7 Behold his bed, which is Solomon's; threescore valiant men are about it, of the valiant of Israel.
7 Look! It's Solomon's sedan chair, with 60 of the best soldiers in Israel surrounding it.
8 All of them are skilled with a sword, well-trained in the art of warfare. Each has his sword at his side, to guard against the terrors of the night.
8 “All of them are wielders of the sword,(N)Expert in war;Each man has his (O)sword at his side,Guarding against the (j)(P)terrors of the night.
8 They all hold swords, being expert in war: every man hath his sword upon his thigh because of fear in the night.
8 All of them are skilled with swordsand trained in warfare.Each has his sword at his side(I)to guard against the terror of the night.(J)
8 All of them are wearing swords and are experienced in battle. Each has his sword on his thigh, ready for the terror of the night.
10 Its posts were made of silver; its back was made of gold. Its seat was upholstered with purple wool; its interior was inlaid with leather by the maidens of Jerusalem.
10 “He made its posts of silver,Its (k)back of goldAnd its seat of purple fabric,With its interior lovingly fitted outBy the (Q)daughters of Jerusalem.
10 He made the pillars thereof of silver, the bottom thereof of gold, the covering of it of purple, the midst thereof being paved with love, for the daughters of Jerusalem.
10 He made its posts of silver,its back(f) of gold,and its seat of purple.Its interior is inlaid with love(g)by the young women of Jerusalem.(K)
10 He made its posts of silver, its back of gold. Its seat was purple, and its interior was lovingly inlaid by the young women of Jerusalem.
11 Come out, O maidens of Zion, and gaze upon King Solomon! He is wearing the crown with which his mother crowned him on his wedding day, on the most joyous day of his life!
11 “Go forth, O (R)daughters of Zion,And gaze on King Solomon with the (l)crownWith which his mother has crowned himOn the (S)day of his wedding,And on the day of his gladness of heart.”
11 Go forth, O ye daughters of Zion, and behold king Solomon with the crown wherewith his mother crowned him in the day of his espousals, and in the day of the gladness of his heart.
11 Come out, young women of Zion,(L)and gaze at King Solomon,wearing the crown his mother placed on himthe day of his wedding(M)—the day of his heart’s rejoicing. >
11 Come out, young women of Zion, and see King Solomon with the crown with which his mother crowned him on his wedding day his day of great delight.
