רָעָ֑ה

וְאַל־

wə·’al-

[תתאו]

tiṯ·’āw

tiṯ·’āw,

לִהְי֥וֹת

lih·yō·wṯ

to be

. אִתָּֽם׃

’it·tām.

with them .

כִּי־

kî-

､ שֹׁ֭ד

šōḏ

יֶהְגֶּ֣ה

yeh·geh

לִבָּ֑ם

lib·bām;

וְ֝עָמָ֗ל

wə·‘ā·māl,

and troublemaking

שִׂפְתֵיהֶ֥ם

śip̄·ṯê·hem

. תְּדַבֵּֽרְנָה׃

tə·ḏab·bê·rə·nāh.

talk of .

בְּ֭חָכְמָה

bə·ḥā·ḵə·māh

– יִבָּ֣נֶה

yib·bā·neh

is built –

בָּ֑יִת

bā·yiṯ;

וּ֝בִתְבוּנָ֗ה

ū·ḇiṯ·ḇū·nāh,

and by understanding

– יִתְכּוֹנָֽן׃

yiṯ·kō·w·nān.

it is established –

וּ֭בְדַעַת

ū·ḇə·ḏa·‘aṯ

and by knowledge

חֲדָרִ֣ים

ḥă·ḏā·rîm

יִמָּלְא֑וּ

yim·mā·lə·’ū;

כָּל־

kāl-

with all

ה֖וֹן

hō·wn

יָקָ֣ר

yā·qār

. וְנָעִֽים׃

wə·nā·‘îm.

גֶּֽבֶר־

ge·ḇer-

A man [is]

חָכָ֥ם

ḥā·ḵām

– בַּע֑וֹז

ba·‘ō·wz;

וְאִֽישׁ־

wə·’îš-

and Yes a man

דַּ֝֗עַת

da·‘aṯ,

מְאַמֶּץ־

mə·’am·meṣ-

. כֹּֽחַ׃

kō·aḥ.

כִּ֣י

kî

בְ֭תַחְבֻּלוֹת

ḇə·ṯaḥ·bu·lō·wṯ

by wise counsel

תַּעֲשֶׂה־

ta·‘ă·śeh-

לְּךָ֣

lə·ḵā

､ מִלְחָמָ֑ה

mil·ḥā·māh;

war ､

וּ֝תְשׁוּעָ֗ה

ū·ṯə·šū·‘āh,

and [there is] safety

בְּרֹ֣ב

bə·rōḇ

. יוֹעֵֽץ׃

yō·w·‘êṣ.

of counselors .

רָאמ֣וֹת

rā·mō·wṯ

､ לֶֽאֱוִ֣יל

le·’ĕ·wîl

for a fool ､

חָכְמ֑וֹת

ḥā·ḵə·mō·wṯ;

. בַּ֝שַּׁ֗עַר

baš·ša·‘ar,

in the gate .

. פִּֽיהוּ׃

מְחַשֵּׁ֥ב

לְהָרֵ֑עַ

to do evil

to

בַּֽעַל־

ba·‘al-

a

מְזִמּ֥וֹת

mə·zim·mō·wṯ

. יִקְרָֽאוּ׃

yiq·rā·’ū.

will be called .

זִמַּ֣ת

zim·maṯ

אִוֶּ֣לֶת

’iw·we·leṯ

､ חַטָּ֑את

ḥaṭ·ṭāṯ;

[is] sin ､

וְתוֹעֲבַ֖ת

wə·ṯō·w·‘ă·ḇaṯ

and an abomination

לְאָדָ֣ם

lə·’ā·ḏām

to men

. לֵֽץ׃

lêṣ.

the scoffer [is] .

הִ֭תְרַפִּיתָ

hiṯ·rap·pî·ṯā

בְּי֥וֹם

bə·yō·wm

in the day

､ צָרָ֗ה

ṣā·rāh,

of adversity ､

צַ֣ר

ṣar

. כֹּחֶֽכָה׃

kō·ḥe·ḵāh.

Your strength [is] .

הַ֭צֵּל

haṣ·ṣêl

לְקֻחִ֣ים

lə·qu·ḥîm

[those who] are drawn

､ לַמָּ֑וֶת

lam·mā·weṯ;

toward death ､

וּמָטִ֥ים

ū·mā·ṭîm

and [those] stumbling

– לַ֝הֶ֗רֶג

la·he·reḡ,

to the slaughter –

אִם־

’im-

If

. תַּחְשֽׂוֹךְ׃

taḥ·śō·wḵ.

כִּֽי־

kî-

If

､ תֹאמַ֗ר

ṯō·mar,

､ הֵן֮

hên

– לֹא־

lō-

not –

יָדַ֪עְנ֫וּ

yā·ḏa‘·nū

זֶ֥ה

zeh

הֲ‍ֽלֹא־

hălō-

Does not

תֹ֘כֵ֤ן

ṯō·ḵên

לִבּ֨וֹת ׀

lib·bō·wṯ

הֽוּא־

hū-

he

יָבִ֗ין

yā·ḇîn,

וְנֹצֵ֣ר

wə·nō·ṣêr

and He who keeps

､ נַ֭פְשְׁךָ

nap̄·šə·ḵā

ה֣וּא

hū

He

יֵדָ֑ע

yê·ḏā‘;

does [not] know [it]

וְהֵשִׁ֖יב

wə·hê·šîḇ

and will He [not] render

לְאָדָ֣ם

lə·’ā·ḏām

؟ כְּפָעֳלֽוֹ׃

kə·p̄ā·‘o·lōw.

according to his deeds ؟

אֱכָל־

’ĕ·ḵāl-

､ בְּנִ֣י

bə·nî

My son ､

､ דְבַ֣שׁ

ḏə·ḇaš

כִּי־

kî-

– ט֑וֹב

ṭō·wḇ;

[it is] good –

､ וְנֹ֥פֶת

wə·nō·p̄eṯ

and the honeycomb ､

מָ֝ת֗וֹק

mā·ṯō·wq,

[which is] sweet

עַל־

‘al-

to

– חִכֶּֽךָ׃

ḥik·ke·ḵā.

כֵּ֤ן ׀

kên

so

דְּעֶ֥ה

də·‘eh

[shall] the knowledge

חָכְמָ֗ה

ḥāḵ·māh

of wisdom [be]

– לְנַ֫פְשֶׁ֥ךָ

lə·nap̄·še·ḵā

to your soul –

אִם־

’im-

if

מָ֭צָאתָ

mā·ṣā·ṯā

you have found [it]

וְיֵ֣שׁ

wə·yêš

and there is

､ אַחֲרִ֑ית

’a·ḥă·rîṯ;

וְ֝תִקְוָתְךָ֗

wə·ṯiq·wā·ṯə·ḵā,

לֹ֣א

lō

not

. תִכָּרֵֽת׃

ṯik·kā·rêṯ.

will be cut off .

תֶּאֱרֹ֣ב

do lie in wait

רָ֭שָׁע

rā·šā‘

לִנְוֵ֣ה

lin·wêh

against the dwelling

– צַדִּ֑יק

ṣad·dîq;

of the righteous –

אַֽל־

’al-

not

תְּשַׁדֵּ֥ד

tə·šad·dêḏ

– רִבְצוֹ׃‪‬‪‬

riḇ·ṣōw.

his resting place –

כִּ֤י

kî

שֶׁ֨בַע ׀

še·ḇa‘

יִפּ֣וֹל

yip·pō·wl

צַדִּ֣יק

ṣad·dîq

a righteous [man]

– וָקָ֑ם

wā·qām;

and rise again –

וּ֝רְשָׁעִ֗ים

ū·rə·šā·‘îm,

but the wicked

יִכָּשְׁל֥וּ

yik·kā·šə·lū

. בְרָעָֽה׃

ḇə·rā·‘āh.

､ בִּנְפֹ֣ל

bin·p̄ōl

[אויביך]

’ō·wy·ḇe·ḵā

-

(אֽ֭וֹיִבְךָ‪‬)

’ō·w·yiḇ·ḵā

אַל־

’al-

not

תִּשְׂמָ֑ח

tiś·māḥ;

– וּ֝בִכָּשְׁל֗וֹ

ū·ḇik·kā·šə·lōw,

and when he stumbles –

אַל־

’al-

not

יָגֵ֥ל

yā·ḡêl

do let be glad

. לִבֶּֽךָ׃

lib·be·ḵā.

פֶּן־

pen-

יִרְאֶ֣ה

yir·’eh

see [it]

יְ֭הוָה

Yah·weh

וְרַ֣ע

wə·ra‘

and it displease

בְּעֵינָ֑יו

bə·‘ê·nāw;

וְהֵשִׁ֖יב

wə·hê·šîḇ

and He turn away

מֵעָלָ֣יו

mê·‘ā·lāw

. אַפּֽוֹ׃

’ap·pōw.

אַל־

’al-

Not

תִּתְחַ֥ר

tiṯ·ḥar

בַּמְּרֵעִ֑ים

bam·mə·rê·‘îm;

because of evildoers

אַל־

’al-

תְּ֝קַנֵּ֗א

tə·qan·nê,

– בָּרְשָׁעִֽים׃

bā·rə·šā·‘îm.

of the wicked –

כִּ֤י ׀

kî

לֹֽא־

lō-

no

תִהְיֶ֣ה

ṯih·yeh

there will be

אַחֲרִ֣ית

’a·ḥă·rîṯ

לָרָ֑ע

lā·rā‘;

for the evil [man]

נֵ֖ר

nêr

the lamp

רְשָׁעִ֣ים

rə·šā·‘îm

of the wicked

. יִדְעָֽךְ׃

yiḏ·‘āḵ.

will be put out .

יְרָֽא־

yə·rā-

אֶת־

’eṯ-

My son

יְהוָ֣ה

Yah·weh

､ בְּנִ֣י

bə·nî

My son ､

– וָמֶ֑לֶךְ

wā·me·leḵ;

and the king –

עִם־

‘i·mō·šō-

with

– שׁ֝וֹנִ֗ים

w·nîm,

those given to change –

אַל־

’al-

Not

. תִּתְעָרָֽב׃

tiṯ·‘ā·rāḇ.

כִּֽי־

kî-

– פִ֭תְאֹם

p̄iṯ·’ōm

יָק֣וּם

yā·qūm

will rise

אֵידָ֑ם

’ê·ḏām;

וּפִ֥יד

ū·p̄îḏ

and can bring the ruin

؟ שְׁ֝נֵיהֶ֗ם

nê·hem,

מִ֣י

mî

. יוֹדֵֽעַ׃

yō·w·ḏê·a‘.

Further Sayings of the Wise

גַּם־

gam-

אֵ֥לֶּה

’êl·leh

these [things belong]

. לַֽחֲכָמִ֑ים

la·ḥă·ḵā·mîm;

to the wise .

הַֽכֵּר־

hak·kêr-

To show partiality

פָּנִ֖ים

pā·nîm

בְּמִשְׁפָּ֣ט

bə·miš·pāṭ

בַּל־

bal-

not

. טֽוֹב׃

ṭō·wḇ.

[it is] good .

אֹ֤מֵ֨ר ׀

’ō·mêr

､ לְרָשָׁע֮

lə·rā·šā‘

to the wicked ､

– צַדִּ֪יק

ṣad·dîq

אָ֥תָּה

’āt·tāh

､ יִקְּבֻ֥הוּ

yiq·qə·ḇu·hū

Him will curse ､

עַמִּ֑ים

‘am·mîm;

יִזְעָמ֥וּהוּ

yiz·‘ā·mū·hū

. לְאֻמִּֽים׃

lə·’um·mîm.

וְלַמּוֹכִיחִ֥ים

wə·lam·mō·w·ḵî·ḥîm

But those who rebuke [the wicked]

､ יִנְעָ֑ם

yin·‘ām;

will have delight ､

וַֽ֝עֲלֵיהֶ֗ם

wa·‘ă·lê·hem,

תָּב֥וֹא

tā·ḇō·w

will come

בִרְכַּת־

ḇir·kaṯ-

. טֽוֹב׃

ṭō·wḇ.

שְׂפָתַ֥יִם

śə·p̄ā·ṯa·yim

The lips

יִשָּׁ֑ק

yiš·šāq;

מֵ֝שִׁ֗יב

mê·šîḇ,

דְּבָרִ֥ים

də·ḇā·rîm

. נְכֹחִֽים׃

nə·ḵō·ḥîm.

הָ֘כֵ֤ן

hā·ḵên

､ בַּח֨וּץ ׀

ba·ḥūṣ

מְלַאכְתֶּ֗ךָ

mə·laḵ·te·ḵā,

וְעַתְּדָ֣הּ

wə·‘at·tə·ḏāh

and Make it fit

– בַּשָּׂדֶ֣ה

baś·śā·ḏeh

in the field –

לָ֑ךְ

lāḵ;

אַ֝חַ֗ר

’a·ḥar,

וּבָנִ֥יתָ

ū·ḇā·nî·ṯā

. בֵיתֶֽךָ׃

ḇê·ṯe·ḵā.

בְּרֵעֶ֑ךָ

against your neighbor

וַ֝הֲפִתִּ֗יתָ

wa·hă·p̄it·tî·ṯā,

for would you deceive

. בִּשְׂפָתֶֽיךָ׃

biś·p̄ā·ṯe·ḵā.

with your lips .

תֹּאמַ֗ר

do say

כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר

ka·’ă·šer

as

עָֽשָׂה־

‘ā·śāh-

לִ֭י

lî

to me

כֵּ֤ן

kên

אֶֽעֱשֶׂה־

’e·‘ĕ·śeh-

I will do

לּ֑וֹ

lōw;

to him

אָשִׁ֖יב

’ā·šîḇ

I will render

לָאִ֣ישׁ

lā·’îš

to the man

. כְּפָעֳלֽוֹ׃

kə·p̄ā·‘o·lōw.

according to his work .

עַל־

of the man

､ עָצֵ֣ל

‘ā·ṣêl

lazy ､

עָבַ֑רְתִּי

‘ā·ḇar·tî;

וְעַל־

and by

כֶּ֝֗רֶם

ke·rem,

אָדָ֥ם

’ā·ḏām

of the [man ]

חֲסַר־

ḥă·sar-

– לֵֽב׃

lêḇ.

understanding –

､ וְהִנֵּ֨ה

wə·hin·nêh

and there it was ､

עָ֘לָ֤ה

‘ā·lāh

כֻלּ֨וֹ ׀

ḵul·lōw

קִמְּשֹׂנִ֗ים

qim·mə·śō·nîm,

כָּסּ֣וּ

kās·sū

פָנָ֣יו

p̄ā·nāw

､ חֲרֻלִּ֑ים

ḥă·rul·lîm;

with nettles ､

וְגֶ֖דֶר

wə·ḡe·ḏer

אֲבָנָ֣יו

’ă·ḇā·nāw

. נֶהֱרָֽסָה׃

ne·hĕ·rā·sāh.

was broken down .

､ וָֽאֶחֱזֶ֣ה

wā·’e·ḥĕ·zeh

And when saw [it] ､

אָ֭נֹכִֽי

’ā·nō·ḵî

I

אָשִׁ֣ית

’ā·šîṯ

I considered [it]

– לִבִּ֑י

lib·bî;

well –

רָ֝אִ֗יתִי

rā·’î·ṯî,

I looked on [it]

לָקַ֥חְתִּי

lā·qaḥ·tî

. מוּסָֽר׃

mū·sār.

מְעַ֣ט

mə·‘aṭ

､ שֵׁ֭נוֹת

nō·wṯ

a sleep ､

מְעַ֣ט

mə·‘aṭ

､ תְּנוּמ֑וֹת

tə·nū·mō·wṯ;

מְעַ֓ט ׀

mə·‘aṭ

חִבֻּ֖ק

ḥib·buq

יָדַ֣יִם

yā·ḏa·yim

of the hands

､ לִשְׁכָּֽב׃

liš·kāḇ.

to rest ､

וּבָֽא־

ū·ḇā-

– מִתְהַלֵּ֥ךְ

miṯ·hal·lêḵ

[like] a prowler –

רֵישֶׁ֑ךָ

rê·še·ḵā;

וּ֝מַחְסֹרֶ֗יךָ

ū·maḥ·sō·re·ḵā,

כְּאִ֣ישׁ

kə·’îš

. מָגֵֽן׃

mā·ḡên.

an armed .
