I, a ruler in the church, send word to the well loved Gaius, for whom I have true love.

Beloved, I pray that in every way you may succeed and prosper and be in good health [physically], just as [I know] your soul prospers [spiritually].

For I was very happy when some of the brothers came and told me that you are being [faithful] to the truth [i.e., the word of God], and that you are living according to it, [as well].

Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well:

Dearly beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good: He that doeth well is of God: but he that doeth evil seeth not God.
