Where did the baptism of John come from? Was it from heaven or from men? They talked among themselves. If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Why did you not have faith in him?'
John the Baptist was in the desert (wilderness) telling people to repent (turn away from sin) and be baptized for forgiveness of sins. People from the province of Judea and the city of Jerusalem went out to hear John. They confessed their sins and he baptized them in the Jordan River.

Then he told them: Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep. I go to wake him out of sleep. The disciples said, Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he would recover. Jesus spoke of his death. They thought he spoke of taking rest in sleep. Then Jesus said plainly: Lazarus is dead! I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, for it will help you believe. Let us go to him. Thomas, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples: Let us also go that we may die with him.
