Then the children of Judah came to Joshua in Gilgal: and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said to him: You know what Jehovah said to Moses the man of God concerning you and me in Kadesh-barnea. I was forty years old when Moses the servant of Jehovah sent me from Kadesh-barnea to spy out the land. I brought him word again as it was in my heart. Nevertheless my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people dissolve. But I wholly followed Jehovah my God. read more.
Moses swore on that day, saying: 'Surely the land where your feet have trodden shall be your inheritance, and your children's from generation to generation, because you have completely followed Jehovah my God. Jehovah has kept me alive, as he said, these forty-five years, even since Jehovah spoke this word to Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness. Now I am this day eighty-five years old. So far I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength is now, for war, both to go out, and to come in. Now therefore give me this mountain. This is where Jehovah spoke that day. You heard about the Anakims that day. Their cities were large and fortified and Jehovah helped me drive them out just as Jehovah said. Joshua blessed Caleb the son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron for an inheritance. Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite to this day, because that he wholly followed Jehovah the God of Israel.

I raised my hand and swore an oath to give you this land to live in. But none of you will enter it except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

Of all the men who went to explore the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.

Moses and the priest Eleazar added up the total number of Israelites on the plains of Moab near the Jordan River across from Jericho. Not a single one of the Israelites Moses and the priest Aaron had counted in the Desert of Sinai were there. Jehovah said: They must all die in the desert wilderness. The only ones left were Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

None of the people twenty years old or older, who came from Egypt, will see the land I promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob with an oath. This is because they did not wholeheartedly follow me. Only Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun will get to see the land. This is because they wholeheartedly followed Jehovah. Jehovah's anger blazed against the Israelites. Therefore he made them wander in the desert for forty years until the whole generation of those who had done evil in Jehovah's presence was gone.

Jehovah heard what you said. He was angry and solemnly swore: Not one man of this evil generation will see that good land, which I swore to give your fathers, Except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He will see it. I will give him and his descendants the land he walks on. This is because he followed Jehovah wholeheartedly.

To Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a part among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of Jehovah to Joshua, even the city of Arba the father of Anak, which city is Hebron. From Hebron Caleb drove out the three sons of Anak, Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai. He went to the inhabitants of Debir. The name of Debir previously was Kirjath-sepher. read more.
Caleb said: I will give Achsah my daughter in marriage to the man who captures it and kills Kirjath-sepher.

The people came up out of Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, in the east border of Jericho.

The men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua to the camp at Gilgal saying: Do not abandon your servants. Come to us quickly and save us. Help us for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains have gathered together against us.

They went to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel: We come from a distant country, make a treaty with us.

Joshua returned, and all Israel returned with him to the camp at Gilgal.
