And all the people broke off the golden rings which were in their ears, and brought them to Aaron. And he received it at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, and made it a molten calf. Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold. And he said to them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. And he set the one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan.

And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord grow hot. Thou know the people, that they are [set] on evil. For they said to me, Make gods for us, which shall go before us. For as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we know not what has become of him. And I said to them, Whoever has any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it to me, and I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.

And I looked, and, behold, ye had sinned against LORD your God. Ye had made you a molten calf. Ye had turned aside quickly out of the way which LORD had commanded you. And I took hold of the two tablets, and cast them out of my two hands, and broke them before your eyes. And I fell down before LORD, as at the first, forty days and forty nights. For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure with which LORD was angry against you to destroy you. But LORD hearkened to me that time also. And LORD was very angry with Aaron to destroy him.
