"Teacher, which commandment [is] greatest in the law?" And he said to him, " 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the greatest and first commandment.read more.
And the second [is] like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets."
And one of the scribes came up [and] heard them debating. [When he] saw that he answered them well, he asked him, "Which commandment is the most important of all?" Jesus answered, "The most important is, 'Listen, Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God from your whole heart and from your whole soul and from your whole mind and from your whole strength.'read more.
The second [is] this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these."
So he answered [and] said to them, "Why do you also break the commandment of God because of your tradition?
And he said to them, "You splendidly ignore the commandment of God so that you can keep your tradition.
Both Paul and Barnabas spoke boldly [and] said, "It was necessary [that] the word of God be spoken first to you, since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life! Behold, we are turning to the Gentiles! For so the Lord has commanded us: 'I have appointed you {to be} a light for the Gentiles, {that you would bring} salvation to the end of the earth.'
Therefore [although] God has overlooked the times of ignorance, he now commands all people everywhere to repent,
who, [although they] know the requirements of God, that those who do such things are worthy of death, not only do they do the same [things], but also they approve of those who do [them].
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope,
but at the proper time has disclosed his message in the proclamation [with] which I was entrusted according to the command of God our Savior,
And this is his commandment: that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as {he commanded us}.
And this [is] the commandment we have from him: that the one who loves God should love his brother also.
"A new commandment I give to you: that you love one another--just as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
And he said to them, "Why are you fearful, [you] of little faith?" Then he got up [and] rebuked the winds and the sea and there was a great calm. And the men were astonished, saying, "What sort of [man] is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?"
And he woke up [and] rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Be quiet! Be silent!" And the wind abated and there was a great calm. And he said to them, "Why are you fearful? Do you not yet have faith?" And {they were terribly frightened} and began to say to one another, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?"
And they came [and] woke him up, saying, "Master, master! We are perishing!" So he got up [and] rebuked the wind and the billowing waves of water and they ceased, and it became calm. And he said to them, "Where [is] your faith?" But they were afraid [and] were astonished, saying to one another, "Who then is this, that he commands even the winds and the water and they obey him?"
Therefore, go [and] make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you, and behold, I am with you all the days until the end of the age."
And Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" And [after] convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, the unclean spirit came out of him. And they were all amazed, so that [they began] to discuss with one another, saying, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He even commands the unclean spirits and they obey him."
And Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent and come out of him!" And [after] throwing him down in their midst, the demon came out of him without hurting him at all. And amazement came upon [them] all, and they began to talk with one another, saying, "What word [is] this? For he commands the unclean spirits with authority and power, and they come out!"
And he commanded them strictly that no one should learn of this, and said to give her [something] to eat.
And her parents were astonished, but he ordered them to tell no one what had happened.
Now [when] Jesus saw that a crowd was running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "Mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and enter into him no more!"
This is my commandment: that you love one another just as I have loved you.
In the [same] way also the Lord ordered those who proclaim the gospel to live from the gospel.
And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify solemnly that this one is the one appointed by God [as] judge of the living and of the dead.
To the married I command--not I, but the Lord--a wife must not separate from [her] husband. But if indeed she does separate, she must remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce [his] wife.
If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, he should recognize that [the things] which I am writing to you are of the Lord.
For you know what commands we gave to you through the Lord Jesus.
to remember the words proclaimed beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles,
Dear friends, I am not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the message which you have heard. Again, I am writing a new commandment to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light already is shining.
So he ordered [that] they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay for several days.
And as they went through the towns, they passed on to them to observe the rules that had been decided by the apostles and elders [who were] in Jerusalem.
And she was doing this for many days. But Paul, becoming greatly annoyed and turning around, said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!" And it came out {immediately}.
And we have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are both doing and you will do [the things] that we are commanding.
Just as I urged you [when I] traveled to Macedonia, remain in Ephesus, so that you may instruct certain people not to teach other doctrine, and not to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which cause useless speculations rather than God's plan [that is] by faith. But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a faith without hypocrisy,
Command those [who are] rich in this present age not to be proud and not to put their hope in the uncertainty of riches, but in God, who provides us all [things] richly for enjoyment, to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous, sharing freely,
I command you, in the sight of God who gives life to all [things] and Christ Jesus who testified the good confession before Pontius Pilate, [that] you observe the commandment without fault, irreproachable until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,
But some in the crowd were shouting one thing [and] others [another], and [because] he was not able to find out the truth on account of the commotion, he gave orders to bring him into the barracks.
And [when] the dispute became severe, the military tribune, fearing lest Paul be torn apart by them, ordered the detachment to go down, take him away from their midst, and bring [him] into the barracks.
And [after he] had stayed among them not more than eight or ten days, he went down to Caesarea. On the next day he sat down on the judgment seat [and] gave orders [for] Paul to be brought.
(Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, they should report [it], in order that they could arrest him.)
But [after they] had ordered them to go outside the Sanhedrin, they began to confer with one another,
saying, "{We strictly commanded} you not to teach in this name? And behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching! And you are intending to bring upon us the blood of this man!"
So the high priest Ananias ordered those standing near him to strike his mouth. Then Paul said to him, "God is going to strike you, [you] whitewashed wall! And are you sitting [there] judging me according to the law, and acting contrary to the law do you order me to be struck?"
For [when] every commandment had been spoken by Moses to all the people according to the law, [he] took the blood of calves with water and scarlet wool and hyssop [and] sprinkled both the scroll itself and all the people, saying, "This [is] the blood of the covenant that God has commanded for you."
And Jesus said to him, "See that you tell no one, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony to them."
And he said to him, "See to it that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and bring for your cleansing [the things] which Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.
They said to him, "Why then did Moses command [us] to give a document--a certificate of divorce--and to divorce her?" He said to them, "Moses, with reference to your hardness of heart, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not like this.
And he answered [and] said to them, "What did Moses command you?" So they said, "Moses permitted [a man] to write a certificate of divorce and to send [her] away."
But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all [kinds of] covetousness. For apart from the law, sin [is] dead. And I was alive once, apart from the law, but [when] the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died, and this commandment which [was] to [lead to] life was found with respect to me to [lead to] death.read more.
For sin, seizing the opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed [me]. So then, the law [is] holy, and the commandment [is] holy and righteous and good. Therefore, [did that which is] good become death to me? May it never be! Rather [it was] sin, in order that it might be recognized [as] sin, producing death through [what is] good for me, in order that sin might become sinful to an extraordinary degree through the commandment.
For you have not come to something that can be touched, and to a burning fire, and to darkness, and to gloom, and to a whirlwind, and to the noise of a trumpet, and to the sound of words which those who heard begged [that] not [another] word be spoken to them. For they could not endure what was commanded: "If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned."read more.
And the spectacle was so terrifying [that] Moses said, "I am terrified and trembling."
