For, on behalf of Christ, you have had the privilege granted you, not only of trusting in him, but also of suffering on his behalf.

But the Apostles left the Council, rejoicing that they had been thought worthy to suffer disgrace for that Name;

Dear friends, do not be astonished at the fiery trials that you are passing through, to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. So much is this the case that we ourselves speak with pride, before the Churches of God, of the patience and faith which you have shown, in spite of all the persecutions and troubles that you are enduring. No discipline is pleasant at the time; on the contrary, it is painful. But afterwards its fruit is seen in the peacefulness of a righteous life which is the lot of those who have been trained under it.

Except that in town after town the Holy Spirit plainly declares to me that imprisonment and troubles await me. We work hard, toiling with our own hands. We meet abuse with blessings, we meet persecution with endurance, We meet slander with gentle appeals. We have been treated as the scum of the earth, the vilest of the vile, to this very hour.

Blessed is the God and Father of Jesus Christ our Lord, the all-merciful Father, the God ever ready to console, Who consoles us in all our troubles, so that we may be able to console those who are in any trouble with the consolation that we ourselves receive from him. It is true that we have our full share of the sufferings of the Christ, but through the Christ we have also our full share of consolation.

You for whom I am again enduring a mother's pains, till a likeness to Christ shall have been formed in you.
