On this very account, too, pay tribute also: for they are the public servants of God, attending continually to this very thing. Render, therefore, to all their dues; tribute, to whom tribute is due; custom, to whom custom; fear, to whom fear; honor, to whom honor is due.

And when they had come into Capernaum, those who collected the didrachma came to Peter, and said: Does not your teacher pay the didrachma? He said: Yes. And when he had come into the house, before he had spoken, Jesus said to him: What think you, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect tax or tribute? The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself: God, I thank thee that I am not as other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the publicans the same?

But if he refuse to hear them, tell it to the church; and if he also refuse to hear the church, let him be to you as a heathen man and a publican.

When Jesus heard it, he said to them: Those who are in health have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. But go and learn what this means: I desire mercy, and not sacrifice. And he went out again by the sea: and all the multitude came to him, and he taught them. And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphoeus sitting at the custom-house; and he said to him: Follow me. And he arose and followed him.

And after these tilings, he went out and saw a publican named Levi, sitting at the custom-house; and he said to him: Follow me. And leaving all, he arose and followed him.
