'Gain' in the Bible
For what does it benefit a person to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?
By your patient endurance you will gain your lives.
For [although I] am free from all [people], I have enslaved myself to all, in order that I may gain more.
I have become like a Jew to the Jews, in order that I may gain the Jews. To those under the law [I became] as under the law ([although I] myself am not under the law) in order that I may gain those under the law.
To those outside the law [I became] as outside the law ([although I] am not outside the law of God, but subject to the law of Christ) in order that I may gain those outside the law.
To the weak I became weak, in order that I may gain the weak. I have become all [things] to all [people], in order that by all means I may save some.
For to me to live [is] Christ and to die [is] gain.
But whatever [things] were gain to me, these [things] I have considered loss because of Christ.
{More than that}, even consider all [things] to be loss because of the surpassing greatness of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for the sake of whom I have suffered the loss of all [things], and consider [them] dung, in order that I may gain Christ
Deacons likewise [must be] dignified, not insincere, not devoted to much wine, not fond of dishonest gain,
constant wrangling by people of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who consider godliness to be a means of gain.
But godliness with contentment is a great means of gain.
For it is necessary [for] the overseer to be blameless as God's steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not violent, not greedy for dishonest gain,
whom it is necessary to silence, whoever are ruining whole families [by] teaching [things] which must not be [taught] for the sake of dishonest gain.
Women received back their dead by resurrection. But others were tortured, not accepting release, in order that they might gain a better resurrection.
Woe to them! For they have traveled in the way of Cain, and have given themselves up to the error of Balaam for gain, and have perished in the rebellion of Korah.
These [people] are grumblers, discontented, proceeding according to their desires, and their mouths speaking pompous [words], {showing partiality to gain an advantage}.
