'Hosts' in the Bible

It was the same Aaron and Moses to whom the Lord said, “Bring out the sons of Israel from the land of Egypt according to their hosts.”

When Pharaoh does not listen to you, then I will lay My hand on Egypt and bring out My hosts, My people the sons of Israel, from the land of Egypt by great judgments.

You shall also observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this very day I brought your hosts out of the land of Egypt; therefore you shall observe this day throughout your generations as a permanent ordinance.

And at the end of four hundred and thirty years, to the very day, all the hosts of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt.

And on that same day the Lord brought the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their hosts.

Now this man would go up from his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice to the Lord of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests to the Lord there.

She made a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a son, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and a razor shall never come on his head.”

So the people sent to Shiloh, and from there they carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts who sits above the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘I will punish Amalek for what he did to Israel, how he set himself against him on the way while he was coming up from Egypt.

Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have taunted.

David became greater and greater, for the Lord God of hosts was with him.

And David arose and went with all the people who were with him to Baale-judah, to bring up from there the ark of God which is called by the Name, the very name of the Lord of hosts who is enthroned above the cherubim.

When David had finished offering the burnt offering and the peace offering, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts.

“Now therefore, thus you shall say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, “I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people Israel.

that Your name may be magnified forever, by saying, ‘The Lord of hosts is God over Israel’; and may the house of Your servant David be established before You.

For You, O Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, have made a revelation to Your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house’; therefore Your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to You.

Elijah said, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.”

Then he said, “I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars and killed Your prophets with the sword. And I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”

Elisha said, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look at you nor see you.

“It is the Lord of hosts whom you should regard as holy.And He shall be your fear,And He shall be your dread.

Behold, I and the children whom the Lord has given me are for signs and wonders in Israel from the Lord of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion.

There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace,On the throne of David and over his kingdom,To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousnessFrom then on and forevermore.The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.

By the fury of the Lord of hosts the land is burned up,And the people are like fuel for the fire;No man spares his brother.

Therefore the Lord, the God of hosts, will send a wasting disease among his stout warriors;And under his glory a fire will be kindled like a burning flame.

For a complete destruction, one that is decreed, the Lord God of hosts will execute in the midst of the whole land.

Therefore thus says the Lord God of hosts, “O My people who dwell in Zion, do not fear the Assyrian who strikes you with the rod and lifts up his staff against you, the way Egypt did.

The Lord of hosts will arouse a scourge against him like the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb; and His staff will be over the sea and He will lift it up the way He did in Egypt.

Behold, the Lord, the God of hosts, will lop off the boughs with a terrible crash;Those also who are tall in stature will be cut downAnd those who are lofty will be abased.

A sound of tumult on the mountains,Like that of many people!A sound of the uproar of kingdoms,Of nations gathered together!The Lord of hosts is mustering the army for battle.

Therefore I will make the heavens tremble,And the earth will be shaken from its placeAt the fury of the Lord of hostsIn the day of His burning anger.

“I will rise up against them,” declares the Lord of hosts, “and will cut off from Babylon name and survivors, offspring and posterity,” declares the Lord.

“I will also make it a possession for the hedgehog and swamps of water, and I will sweep it with the broom of destruction,” declares the Lord of hosts.

“The fortified city will disappear from Ephraim,And sovereignty from DamascusAnd the remnant of Aram;They will be like the glory of the sons of Israel,”Declares the Lord of hosts.

At that time a gift of homage will be brought to the Lord of hostsFrom a people tall and smooth,Even from a people feared far and wide,A powerful and oppressive nation,Whose land the rivers divide—To the place of the name of the Lord of hosts, even Mount Zion.

“Moreover, I will deliver the Egyptians into the hand of a cruel master,And a mighty king will rule over them,” declares the Lord God of hosts.

Well then, where are your wise men?Please let them tell you,And let them understand what the Lord of hostsHas purposed against Egypt.

In that day the Egyptians will become like women, and they will tremble and be in dread because of the waving of the hand of the Lord of hosts, which He is going to wave over them.

The land of Judah will become a terror to Egypt; everyone to whom it is mentioned will be in dread of it, because of the purpose of the Lord of hosts which He is purposing against them.

In that day five cities in the land of Egypt will be speaking the language of Canaan and swearing allegiance to the Lord of hosts; one will be called the City of Destruction.

It will become a sign and a witness to the Lord of hosts in the land of Egypt; for they will cry to the Lord because of oppressors, and He will send them a Savior and a Champion, and He will deliver them.

whom the Lord of hosts has blessed, saying, “Blessed is Egypt My people, and Assyria the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance.”

O my threshed people, and my afflicted of the threshing floor!What I have heard from the Lord of hosts,The God of Israel, I make known to you.

For the Lord God of hosts has a day of panic, subjugation and confusionIn the valley of vision,A breaking down of wallsAnd a crying to the mountain.

Therefore in that day the Lord God of hosts called you to weeping, to wailing,To shaving the head and to wearing sackcloth.

But the Lord of hosts revealed Himself to me,“Surely this iniquity shall not be forgiven youUntil you die,” says the Lord God of hosts.

In that day,” declares the Lord of hosts, “the peg driven in a firm place will give way; it will even break off and fall, and the load hanging on it will be cut off, for the Lord has spoken.”

The Lord of hosts has planned it, to defile the pride of all beauty,To despise all the honored of the earth.

The Lord of hosts will prepare a lavish banquet for all peoples on this mountain;A banquet of aged wine, choice pieces with marrow,And refined, aged wine.

In that day the Lord of hosts will become a beautiful crownAnd a glorious diadem to the remnant of His people;

And now do not carry on as scoffers,Or your fetters will be made stronger;For I have heard from the Lord God of hostsOf decisive destruction on all the earth.

This also comes from the Lord of hosts,Who has made His counsel wonderful and His wisdom great.

From the Lord of hosts you will be punished with thunder and earthquake and loud noise,With whirlwind and tempest and the flame of a consuming fire.

For thus says the Lord to me,“As the lion or the young lion growls over his prey,Against which a band of shepherds is called out,And he will not be terrified at their voice nor disturbed at their noise,So will the Lord of hosts come down to wage war on Mount Zion and on its hill.”

Like flying birds so the Lord of hosts will protect Jerusalem.He will protect and deliver it;He will pass over and rescue it.

And all the host of heaven will wear away,And the sky will be rolled up like a scroll;All their hosts will also wither awayAs a leaf withers from the vine,Or as one withers from the fig tree.

For out of Jerusalem will go forth a remnant and out of Mount Zion survivors. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.”’

Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word of the Lord of hosts,

“Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts:‘I am the first and I am the last,And there is no God besides Me.

“I have aroused him in righteousnessAnd I will make all his ways smooth;He will build My city and will let My exiles go free,Without any payment or reward,” says the Lord of hosts.

Our Redeemer, the Lord of hosts is His name,The Holy One of Israel.

“For they call themselves after the holy cityAnd lean on the God of Israel;The Lord of hosts is His name.
