So he asked Jehovah what to do. But Jehovah did not answer him. He did not answer by dreams or by the use of Urim and Thummim or by prophets.

May God deal with me harshly if I do not help David get all that Jehovah promised him when he said:

These are the numbers of armed warriors who joined David at Hebron. They were all eager to see David become king instead of Saul, just as Jehovah had promised.

Jehovah answered: Did I free you from the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, and the Philistines?

Jehovah said to Samuel: How long will you mourn for Saul? After all I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Take oil in your vessel and go. I will send you to Jesse, the Beth-lehemite. I have a king from among his sons.

Are these all the sons you have? Samuel asked. There is still the youngest one, Jesse answered. He is tending sheep. Samuel responded: Send someone to get him. We will not continue until he gets here.

Jehovah did to you what he told you through me. He took the kingdom away from you and gave it to David instead.

All the elders of Israel came to King David at Hebron. He made a sacred alliance with them. They anointed him, and he became king of Israel.

Offer evil for good and evil will not depart from your house.

But the Assyrian emperor has his own violent plans in mind. He is determined to destroy many nations.

Can an ax attack the person who cuts with it? Can a saw make itself greater than the person who saws with it? A rod cannot move the person who lifts it. A wooden stick cannot pick up a person.

Son of man, these people are devoted to their idols. They allow themselves to sin. Should they be allowed to ask me for anything?
