Immoral Behavior And Church Discipline

1 It is actually reported that there is immorality among you, and immorality of such a kind as does not exist even among the Gentiles, that someone has (A)his father’s wife.

1 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.

1 It is widely reported that there is sexual immorality(A) among you, and the kind of sexual immorality that is not even tolerated(a) among the Gentiles(B)—a man is living with his father’s wife.(C)

1 It is actually reported that sexual immorality exists among you, and of a kind that is not found even among the gentiles. A man is actually living with his father's wife!

1 It is actually reported [everywhere] that there is sexual immorality among you, a kind of immorality that is condemned even among the [unbelieving] Gentiles: that someone (a)has [an intimate relationship with] his father’s wife.(A)

2 (a)You (B)have become (b)arrogant and (c)have not (C)mourned instead, so that the one who had done this deed would be (D)removed from your midst.

2 And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.

2 And you are inflated with pride, instead of filled with grief(D) so that he who has committed this act might be removed from your congregation.

2 And you are being arrogant instead of being filled with grief and seeing to it that the man who did this is removed from among you.

2 And you are proud and arrogant! You should have mourned in shame so that the man who has done this [disgraceful] thing would be removed from your fellowship!

3 For I, on my part, though (E)absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged him who has so committed this, as though I were present.

3 For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,

3 For though I am absent in body but present in spirit,(E) I have already decided about the one who has done this thing as though I were present.

3 Even though I am away from you physically, I am with you in spirit. I have already passed judgment on the man who did this, as though I were present with you.

3 For I, though absent [from you] in body but present in spirit, have already passed judgment on him who has committed this [act], as if I were present.

4 (F)In the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are assembled, and (d)I with you in spirit, (G)with the power of our Lord Jesus,

4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,

4 When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus with my spirit and with the power of our Lord Jesus,

4 In the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are gathered together (and I am there in spirit), and the power of our Lord Jesus is there, too,

4 In the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are assembled, and I am with you in spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus,

5 I have decided to (H)deliver such a one to (I)Satan for the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in (J)the day of the Lord (e)Jesus.

5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

5 turn that one over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh,(F) so that his spirit may be saved in the Day of the Lord.(G)

5 turn this man over to Satan for the destruction of his body, so that his spirit may be saved on the Day of the Lord.

5 you are to (b)hand over this man to Satan for the destruction of his body, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

6 (K)Your boasting is not good. (L)Do you not know that (M)a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough?

6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?

6 Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast(H) permeates the whole batch of dough?(I)

6 Your boasting is not good. You know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough, don't you?

6 Your boasting [over the supposed spirituality of your church] is not good [indeed, it is vulgar and inappropriate]. (c)Do you not know that [just] a little leaven ferments the whole batch [of dough, just as a little sin corrupts a person or an entire church]?

7 Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our (N)Passover also has been sacrificed.

7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

7 Clean out the old yeast so that you may be a new batch. You are indeed unleavened, for Christ our Passover(J) has been sacrificed.(b)

7 Get rid of the old yeast so that you may be a new batch of dough, since you are to be free from yeast. For the Messiah, our Passover, has been sacrificed.

7 (d)Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new batch, just as you are, still unleavened. For Christ our Passover Lamb has been sacrificed.

8 Therefore let us celebrate the feast, (O)not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

8 Therefore, let us observe the feast, not with old yeast or with the yeast of malice and evil(K) but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

8 So let's keep celebrating the festival, neither with old yeast nor with yeast that is evil and wicked, but with yeast-free bread that is both sincere and true.

8 Therefore, let us celebrate the feast, not with old leaven, nor with leaven of vice and malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and [untainted] truth.(B)

Church Discipline

9 I wrote you in my letter (P)not to associate with immoral people;

9 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:

9 I wrote to you in a letter not to associate(L) with sexually immoral people.(M)

9 I wrote to you in my letter to stop associating with people who are sexually immoral

9 I wrote you in my [previous] letter not to associate with [sexually] immoral people—

10 I did not at all mean with the immoral people of this world, or with the covetous and swindlers, or with (Q)idolaters, for then you would have to go out of the world.

10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.

10 I did not mean the immoral people of this world or the greedy(N) and swindlers(O) or idolaters; otherwise you would have to leave the world.(P)

10 not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, greedy, robbers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world.

10 not meaning the immoral people of this world, or the greedy ones and swindlers, or idolaters, for then you would have to get out of the world and human society altogether!

11 But (f)actually, I wrote to you not to associate (g)with any so-called (R)brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or (S)an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler—not even to eat with such a one.

11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.

11 But now I am writing(c) you not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer(d)(Q) who is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or verbally abusive, a drunkard(R) or a swindler. Do not even eat with such a person.

11 But now I am writing to you to stop associating with any so-called brother if he is sexually immoral, greedy, an idolater, a slanderer, a drunk, or a robber. You must even stop eating with someone like that.

11 But actually, I have written to you not to associate with any so-called [Christian] brother if he is sexually immoral or greedy, or is an idolater [devoted to anything that takes the place of God], or is a reviler [who insults or slanders or otherwise verbally abuses others], or is a drunkard or a swindler—you must not so much as (e)eat with such a person.(C)

12 For what have I to do with judging (T)outsiders? (U)Do you not judge those who are within the church?

12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?

12 For what business is it of mine to judge(S) outsiders? Don’t you judge those who are inside?

12 After all, is it my business to judge outsiders? You are to judge those who are in the community, aren't you?

12 For what business is it of mine to judge outsiders (non-believers)? Do you not judge those who are within the church [to protect the church as the situation requires]?

13 But those who are outside, God (h)judges. (V)Remove the wicked man from among yourselves.

13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

13 But God judges outsiders. Put away the evil person from among yourselves.(T)(e)

13 God will judge outsiders. "Expel that wicked man."

13 God alone sits in judgment on those who are outside [the faith]. Remove the wicked one from among you [expel him from your church].(D)
