Jehovah will abandon Israel because Jeroboam sinned and led the people of Israel into sin.

After asking for advice, the king made two golden calves. He said: You have been worshiping in Jerusalem long enough. Israel, here are your gods who brought you out of Egypt.

King Jeroboam of Israel still did not turn from his evil ways. He continued to choose priests from ordinary families to serve at the altars he had built. He ordained as priest anyone who wanted to be one.

Like King Jeroboam before him, he sinned against Jehovah and led Israel into sin.

It was as if he copied the evil ways of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat. He took as his wife Jezebel, daughter of Ethbaal, king of Zidon, and became a servant and worshipper of Baal.

Thou hast gone

They made God furious because they worshiped foreign gods and angered him (stirred up his zeal) because they worshiped worthless idols.

There was war in the land when the Israelites chose new gods. Of the forty thousand men in Israel, did anyone carry shield or spear?

As an alternative, Jeroboam appointed his own priests for the illegal worship sites and the goat and calf statues he had made as idols.

At Mount Horeb they made a statue of a calf. They worshiped an idol made of metal.

Their idols are made of silver and gold. Human hands made them.

All who make idols are nothing. The things they treasure are worthless. Those who would speak up for them are blind. They are shamefully ignorant.

Every man is stupid lacking knowledge. Every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols. His molten images are deceitful. There is no breath in them.

To provoke

The people of Judah sinned against Jehovah. They did more to arouse his anger against them than all their ancestors had done.

Even at Mount Horeb you made Jehovah so angry that he wanted to destroy you.

He built the high places that Hezekiah his father destroyed. He made altars for Baal. Then he made an Asherah as Ahab, king of Israel, had done. Manasseh was a worshipper and servant of all the stars of heaven.

Still the heat of Jehovah's anger was not turned back from Judah. This is because of all Manasseh had done in moving him to anger.

He burned his son as a sacrifice in the valley of Ben Hinnom, he consulted fortunetellers, and he cast evil spells. He also practiced witchcraft, and appointed royal mediums and psychics. He did many things that made Jehovah furious.

How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness! How often they caused him grief in the desert!

They infuriated God by what they did, and a plague broke out among them.

Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, offer sacrifices to Baal and walk after other gods that you have not known?

It stretched out what looked like a hand and grabbed me by the hair on my head. In these visions from God, the Spirit carried me between heaven and earth. He took me in vision to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the north gate of the inner court, where the seat of the idol of jealousy, which provokes to jealousy, was located.

Do we provoke Jehovah to rivalry (indignation) (anger)? Are we stronger than he?

Cast me

But they were hard-hearted, and went against your authority. They turned their backs on your law, and murdered your prophets. These prophets gave witness against them with the purpose of turning them back again to you. They did much to make you angry.

You hate discipline. You cast (throw) my words behind you.

Therefore, the Lord Jehovah says: 'Because you have forgotten me and cast me behind your back, bear now the punishment of your lewdness and your acts of prostitution.'
