The Prophet Elijah Arises

1 And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, saith unto Ahab, 'Jehovah, God of Israel, liveth, before whom I have stood, there is not these years dew and rain, except according to my word.'

1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was of (a)(A)the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab, “(B)As the Lord, the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, surely (C)there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.”

1 And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

1 Now Elijah(A) the Tishbite, from the Gilead settlers,(a)(B) said to Ahab, “As the Lord God of Israel lives,(C) I stand before Him, and there will be no dew or rain during these years except by my command!”(D)

1 Elijah the foreigner, who was an alien resident from Gilead, told Ahab, "As the LORD God of Israel lives, in whose presence I'm standing, there will be neither dew nor rain these next several years, except when I say so."

2 And the word of Jehovah is unto him, saying,

2 The word of the Lord came to him, saying,

2 And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,

2 Then a revelation from the Lord came to him:

2 Later, this message came to him from the LORD:

3 Go from this place; and thou hast turned for thee eastward, and been hidden by the brook Cherith, that is on the front of the Jordan,

3 “Go away from here and turn eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is (b)east of the Jordan.

3 Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.

3 “Leave here, turn eastward, and hide(E) yourself at the Wadi Cherith where it enters the Jordan.

3 "Leave here and go into hiding at the Wadi Cherith, where it enters the Jordan River.

4 and it hath been, from the brook thou dost drink, and the ravens I have commanded to sustain thee there.'

4 It shall be that you will drink of the brook, and (D)I have commanded the ravens to provide for you there.”

4 And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.

4 You are to drink from the wadi. I have commanded the ravens(F) to provide for you there.”

4 You will be able to drink from that brook, and I've commanded some crows to sustain you there."

5 And he goeth and doth according to the word of Jehovah, yea, he goeth and dwelleth by the brook Cherith, that is on the front of the Jordan,

5 So he went and did according to the word of the Lord, for he went and lived by the brook Cherith, which is (c)east of the Jordan.

5 So he went and did according unto the word of the LORD: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.

5 So he did what the Lord commanded. Elijah left and lived by the Wadi Cherith where it enters the Jordan.

5 So Elijah left and did exactly what the LORD had told him to do he went to live near the Wadi Cherith, where it enters the Jordan River.

6 and the ravens are bringing to him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening, and of the brook he drinketh.

6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he would drink from the brook.

6 And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.

6 The ravens kept bringing him bread and meat in the morning and in the evening,(G) and he drank from the wadi.

6 Crows would bring him bread and meat both in the morning and in the evening, and he would drink from the brook.

7 And it cometh to pass, at the end of days, that the brook drieth up, for there hath been no rain in the land,

7 It happened after a while that the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.

7 And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.

7 After a while, the wadi dried up because there had been no rain in the land.

7 But after a while, the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land.

Elijah And The Widow

8 and the word of Jehovah is unto him, saying,

8 Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying,

8 And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,

8 Then the word of the Lord came to him:

8 Then this message came to him from the LORD:

9 Rise, go to Zarephath, that is to Zidon, and thou hast dwelt there; lo, I have commanded there a widow woman to sustain thee.'

9 “Arise, go to (E)Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and stay there; behold, (F)I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.”

9 Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.

9 “Get up, go to Zarephath(H) that belongs to Sidon and stay there. Look, I have commanded a woman who is a widow to provide for you there.”

9 "Get up, move to Zarephath in Sidon, and stay there. Look! I've commanded a widow to sustain you there."

10 And he riseth, and goeth to Zarephath, and cometh in unto the opening of the city, and lo there, a widow woman gathering sticks, and he calleth unto her, and saith, 'Bring, I pray thee, to me, a little water in a vessel, and I drink.'

10 So he arose and went to Zarephath, and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks; and (G)he called to her and said, “Please get me a little water in a (d)jar, that I may drink.”

10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

10 So Elijah got up and went to Zarephath. When he arrived at the city gate, there was a widow woman gathering wood. Elijah called to her and said, “Please bring me a little water in a cup and let me drink.”(I)

10 So he got up and went to Zarephath. As he arrived at the entrance to the city, a widow was there gathering sticks. So he asked her, "Please, may I have some water in a cup so I can have a drink."

11 And she goeth to bring it, and he calleth unto her and saith, 'Bring, I pray thee, to me a morsel of bread in thy hand.'

11 As she was going to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a piece of bread in your hand.”

11 And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.

11 As she went to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a piece of bread in your hand.”

11 While she was on her way to get the water, he called out to her, "Would you please also bring me a piece of bread while you're at it?"

12 And she saith, 'Jehovah thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but the fulness of the hand of meal in a pitcher, and a little oil in a dish; and lo, I am gathering two sticks, and have gone in and prepared it for myself, and for my son, and we have eaten it -- and died.'

12 But she said, “(H)As the Lord your God lives, (I)I have no (e)bread, only a handful of flour in the (f)bowl and a little oil in the jar; and behold, I am gathering (g)a few sticks that I may go in and prepare for me and my son, that we may eat it and (J)die.”

12 And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

12 But she said, “As the Lord your God lives,(J) I don’t have anything baked—only a handful of flour in the jar and a bit of oil(K) in the jug. Just now, I am gathering a couple of sticks in order to go prepare it for myself and my son so we can eat it and die.”(L)

12 "As the LORD your God lives," she replied, "I don't have so much as a muffin, just a handful of flour in a bowl and some oil left in a bottle. Now I'm going to find some sticks so I can cook a last meal for my son and for me. Then we're going to eat it and die."

13 And Elijah saith unto her, 'Fear not, go, do according to thy word, only make for me thence a little cake, in the first place, and thou hast brought out to me; and for thee and for thy son make -- last;

13 Then Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go, do as you have said, but make me a little bread cake from (h)it first and bring it out to me, and afterward you may make one for yourself and for your son.

13 And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.

13 Then Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid; go and do as you have said. But first make me a small loaf from it and bring it out to me. Afterward, you may make some for yourself and your son,

13 But Elijah told her, "You can stop being afraid. Go and do what you said, but first make me a muffin and bring it to me. Then make a meal for yourself and for your son,

14 for thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, The pitcher of meal is not consumed, and the dish of oil is not lacking, till the day of Jehovah's giving a shower on the face of the ground.'

14 For thus says the Lord God of Israel, ‘The (i)bowl of flour shall not be exhausted, nor shall the jar of oil (j)be empty, until the day that the Lord sends rain on the face of the earth.’”

14 For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.

14 for this is what the Lord God of Israel says, ‘The flour jar will not become empty and the oil jug will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the surface of the land.”(M)

14 because this is what the LORD God of Israel says: "That jar of flour will not run out, nor will that bottle of oil become empty until the very day that the LORD sends rain on the surface of the ground.'"

15 And she goeth, and doth according to the word of Elijah, and she eateth, she and he, and her household -- days;

15 So she went and did according to the word of Elijah, and she and he and her household ate for many days.

15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.

15 So she proceeded to do according to the word of Elijah. Then the woman, Elijah, and her household ate for many days.(N)

15 So she went out and did precisely what Elijah told her to do. As a result, Elijah, the widow, and her son were fed for days.

16 the pitcher of meal was not consumed, and the dish of oil did not lack, according to the word of Jehovah that He spake by the hand of Elijah.

16 The (k)bowl of flour was not exhausted nor did the jar of oil (l)become empty, according to the word of the Lord which He spoke through Elijah.

16 And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.

16 The flour jar did not become empty, and the oil jug did not run dry, according to the word of the Lord He had spoken through(b) Elijah.

16 The jar of flour never ran out and the bottle of oil never became empty, just as the LORD had promised through Elijah.

The Widow's Son Raised

17 And it cometh to pass, after these things, the son of the woman, mistress of the house, hath been sick, and his sickness is very severe till that no breath hath been left in him.

17 Now it came about after these things that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became sick; and his sickness was so severe that there was no breath left in him.

17 And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him.

17 After this, the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. His illness became very severe until no breath remained in him.(O)

17 Sometime later, the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. In fact, his illness became so severe that he died.

18 And she saith unto Elijah, 'What -- to me and to thee, O man of God? thou hast come unto me to cause mine iniquity to be remembered, and to put my son to death!'

18 So she said to Elijah, “(K)What do I have to do with you, O (L)man of God? (m)You have come to me to bring my iniquity to remembrance and to put my son to death!”

18 And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son?

18 She said to Elijah, “Man of God,(P) what do we have in common?(Q) Have you come to remind me of my guilt(R) and to kill my son?”

18 "What do we have in common, you man of God?" she accused Elijah. "You came to me so you could uncover my guilt! And you're responsible for the death of my son!"

19 And he saith unto her, 'Give to me thy son;' and he taketh him out of her bosom, and taketh him up unto the upper chamber where he is abiding, and layeth him on his own bed,

19 He said to her, “Give me your son.” Then he took him from her bosom and carried him up to the upper room where he was living, and laid him on his own bed.

19 And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.

19 But Elijah said to her, “Give me your son.” So he took him from her arms, brought him up to the upper room(S) where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed.

19 "Give me your son," he replied. Then he took him from her lap, carried him upstairs to the room where he lived, and laid him on his bed.

20 and crieth unto Jehovah, and saith, 'Jehovah my God, also on the widow with whom I am sojourning hast Thou done evil -- to put her son to death?'

20 He called to the Lord and said, “O Lord my God, have You also brought calamity to the widow with whom I am (n)staying, by causing her son to die?”

20 And he cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?

20 Then he cried out to the Lord(T) and said, “My Lord God, have You also brought tragedy on the widow I am staying with by killing her son?”

20 Then he called out to the LORD and asked him, "LORD my God, have you also brought evil to this dear widow with whom I am living as her guest? Have you caused the death of her son?"

21 And he stretcheth himself out on the lad three times, and calleth unto Jehovah, and saith, 'O Jehovah my God, let turn back, I pray Thee, the soul of this lad into his midst;'

21 (M)Then he stretched himself upon the child three times, and called to the Lord and said, “O Lord my God, I pray You, let this child’s life return (o)to him.”

21 And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again.

21 Then he stretched himself out over the boy three times.(U) He cried out to the Lord and said, “My Lord God, please let this boy’s life return to him!”

21 Then he stretched himself three times and cried out to the LORD, "LORD my God, please cause the soul of this little boy to return to him."

22 and Jehovah hearkeneth to the voice of Elijah, and the soul of the lad turneth back into his midst, and he liveth.

22 The Lord heard the voice of Elijah, (N)and the life of the child returned (p)to him and he revived.

22 And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.

22 So the Lord listened to Elijah’s voice, and the boy’s life returned to him, and he lived.(V)

22 The LORD listened to Elijah, and the soul of the little boy returned to him, and he revived.

23 And Elijah taketh the lad, and bringeth him down from the upper chamber of the house, and giveth him to his mother, and Elijah saith, 'See, thy son liveth!'

23 Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper room into the house and gave him to his mother; and Elijah said, “See, your son is alive.”

23 And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth.

23 Then Elijah took the boy, brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother.(W) Elijah said, “Look, your son is alive.”

23 Then Elijah took the little boy downstairs from the upper chamber back into the main house and delivered him to his mother. "Look," Elijah told her, "your son is alive."

24 And the woman saith unto Elijah, 'Now, this I have known, that a man of God thou art, and the word of Jehovah in thy mouth is truth.'

24 Then the woman said to Elijah, “(O)Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth.”

24 And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth.

24 Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know you are a man of God(X) and the Lord’s word from your mouth is true.”(Y)

24 The woman responded to Elijah, "Now at last I've really learned that you are a man of God and that what you have to say about the LORD is the truth."
