David Leaves The Service Of Achish

1 The Philistines(A) brought all their military units together at Aphek(B) while Israel was camped by the spring in Jezreel.(C)

1 Now (A)the Philistines gathered together all their armies to (B)Aphek, while the Israelites were camping by the spring which is in (C)Jezreel.

1 Now the Philistines gathered together all their armies to Aphek: and the Israelites pitched by a fountain which is in Jezreel.

1 The Philistines gathered all their troops at Aphek, while Israel was camped at the spring in Jezreel.

1 Now the Philistines gathered all their forces at Aphek, while Israel camped by the spring in Jezreel.

2 As the Philistine leaders were passing in review with their units of hundreds and thousands, David and his men(D) were passing in review behind them with Achish.

2 And the lords of the Philistines were proceeding on by hundreds and by thousands, and (D)David and his men were proceeding on in the rear with Achish.

2 And the lords of the Philistines passed on by hundreds, and by thousands: but David and his men passed on in the rereward with Achish.

2 The Philistine leaders were passing in review among the military units, and David and his men were among them in the rear with Achish.

2 As the Philistine lords (governors) were proceeding on [marching] by hundreds and by thousands, and David and his men were proceeding on in the rear with Achish [the king of Gath],

3 Then the Philistine commanders asked, “What are these Hebrews doing here?”Achish answered the Philistine commanders, “That is David, servant of King Saul of Israel. He has been with me a considerable period of time.(a) From the day he defected until today, I’ve found no fault with him.”(E)

3 Then the commanders of the Philistines said, “What are these Hebrews doing here?” And Achish said to the commanders of the Philistines, “Is this not David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, (E)who has been with me these days, or rather these years, and (F)I have found no fault in him from the day he (a)deserted to me to this day?”

3 Then said the princes of the Philistines, What do these Hebrews here? And Achish said unto the princes of the Philistines, Is not this David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, which hath been with me these days, or these years, and I have found no fault in him since he fell unto me unto this day?

3 The Philistine leaders said, "What are these Hebrews doing here?" Achish asked the Philistine leaders, "Isn't this David, the servant of King Saul of Israel, who has been with me these days, or rather these years? I've found no fault in him from the day he deserted until now."

3 the Philistine commanders [having noticed David] said, “What are these Hebrews doing here?” Achish said to the Philistine commanders, “Is this not David, the servant of Saul king of Israel, who has been with me these days and years, and I have found no fault in him from the day he deserted to me to this day?”

4 The Philistine commanders, however, were enraged with Achish and told him, “Send that man back and let him return to the place you assigned him.(F) He must not go down with us into battle only to become our adversary during the battle.(G) What better way could he regain his master’s favor than with the heads of our men?

4 But the commanders of the Philistines were angry with him, and the commanders of the Philistines said to him, “Make the man go back, that he may return (G)to his place where you have assigned him, and do not let him go down to battle with us, (H)or in the battle he may become an adversary to us. For with what could this man make himself acceptable to his lord? Would it not be with the heads of (b)these men?

4 And the princes of the Philistines were wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he be an adversary to us: for wherewith should he reconcile himself unto his master? should it not be with the heads of these men?

4 But the Philistine leaders were angry with him, so they pleaded with him, "Send the man back! Let him return to the place you assigned him. He mustn't go into battle with us. Otherwise, he may become our adversary in the battle! How could there be a better way for this fellow to reconcile himself with his lord? Wouldn't it be with the heads of these men?

4 But the Philistine commanders were angry with Achish and they said to him, “Make this man return, so that he may go back to his place where you have assigned him, and do not let him go down to battle with us, or in the battle he may [turn and] become our adversary. For how could David reconcile himself to his lord [Saul]? Would it not be with the heads of these [Philistine] men?

5 Isn’t this the David they sing about during their dances:Saul has killed his thousands, but David his tens of thousands?”(H)

5 Is this not David, (I)of whom they sing in the dances, saying,‘Saul has slain his thousands,And David his ten thousands’?”

5 Is not this David, of whom they sang one to another in dances, saying, Saul slew his thousands, and David his ten thousands?

5 Isn't this the same David about whom the maidens sang when they were dancing, "Saul has struck down his thousands, but David his ten thousands'?"

5 Is this not David, of whom they used to sing in dances,‘Saul killed his thousands,And David his ten thousands’?”

6 So Achish summoned David and told him, “As the Lord lives, you are an honorable man. I think it is good(b) to have you working(c) with me in the camp, because I have found no fault in you from the day you came to me until today.(I) But the leaders don’t think you are reliable.

6 Then Achish called David and said to him, “As the Lord lives, you have been upright, and (J)your going out and your coming in with me in the army are pleasing in my sight; (K)for I have not found evil in you from the day of your coming to me to this day. Nevertheless, you are not pleasing in the sight of the lords.

6 Then Achish called David, and said unto him, Surely, as the LORD liveth, thou hast been upright, and thy going out and thy coming in with me in the host is good in my sight: for I have not found evil in thee since the day of thy coming unto me unto this day: nevertheless the lords favour thee not.

6 Then Achish summoned David and told him, "As surely as the LORD lives, you are trustworthy, and it seems good to me for you to campaign with me as part of the army. Indeed, I've not found any evil in you from the time you came to me until now. But the leaders don't approve of you.

6 Then Achish called David and said to him, “As the Lord lives, you have been upright (righteous), and your (a)behavior in the army is pleasing in my sight. For from the day you came to me to this day I have found no evil in you. Nevertheless, (b)the [Philistine] lords do not approve of you.

7 Now go back quietly and you won’t be doing anything the Philistine leaders think is wrong.”

7 Now therefore return and go in peace, that you may not displease the lords of the Philistines.”

7 Wherefore now return, and go in peace, that thou displease not the lords of the Philistines.

7 Now return and go in peace, so you do nothing to displease the Philistine leaders."

7 So return now and go in peace [to your place], so that you do not displease the Philistine lords.”

8 “But what have I done?”(J) David replied to Achish. “From the first day I was with you until today, what have you found against your servant to keep me from going along to fight against the enemies of my lord the king?”

8 David said to Achish, “(L)But what have I done? And what have you found in your servant from the day when I came before you to this day, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?”

8 And David said unto Achish, But what have I done? and what hast thou found in thy servant so long as I have been with thee unto this day, that I may not go fight against the enemies of my lord the king?

8 David told Achish, "What have I done, and what have you found in your servant from the time I came before you until this very moment, that I shouldn't go out and fight the enemies of your majesty?"

8 David said to Achish, “But what have I done? What have you found in your servant from the day when I [first] came before you to this day, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?”

9 Achish answered David, “I’m convinced that you are as reliable as the Angel of God.(K) But the Philistine commanders have said, ‘He must not go into battle with us.’(L)

9 But Achish replied to David, “I know that you are pleasing in my sight, (M)like an angel of God; nevertheless (N)the commanders of the Philistines have said, ‘He must not go up with us to the battle.’

9 And Achish answered and said to David, I know that thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle.

9 Achish answered David, "I know that I'm pleased with you. You're like an angel of God. But the Philistine leaders have said, "He mustn't go into battle with us.'

9 Achish answered David, “I know that you are blameless in my sight, like an angel of God; nevertheless the commanders of the Philistines have said, ‘He must not go up with us to the battle.’

10 So get up early in the morning, you and your masters’ servants who came with you.(d)(M) When you’ve all gotten up early, go as soon as it’s light.”

10 Now then arise early in the morning (O)with the servants of your lord who have come with you, and as soon as you have arisen early in the morning and have light, depart.”

10 Wherefore now rise up early in the morning with thy master's servants that are come with thee: and as soon as ye be up early in the morning, and have light, depart.

10 Now, get up early in the morning along with your lord's servants who came with you. Get up early in the morning, and go as soon as you have light."

10 So now, get up early in the morning with your master’s servants who have come with you, and as soon as you are up in the morning and have light, leave.”

11 So David and his men got up early in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

11 So David arose early, he and his men, to depart in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

11 So David and his men rose up early to depart in the morning, to return into the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

11 So David and his men got up early in the morning to return to Philistine territory, while the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

11 So David and his men got up early to leave in the morning, to return to the land of the Philistines. But the Philistines went up to Jezreel [to fight against Israel].
