Therefore

for it seems as if God had exposed us apostles the last upon the stage, as persons appointed to death. for we are made a spectacle to the world, to angels, and to men.

I am press'd on every side, yet not crush'd; perplexed, but not in despair;

as for us, we give no occasion of offence, that our ministry may not be blamed:

so am I: are they ministers of Christ? is it my vanity? I am more so: in toilsome labours I surpass them, in stripes I am exceedingly beyond them, in prisons I have been oftner, and frequently in the very jaws of death.

for which I suffer even the chains of a malefactor: but the word of God is not so confin'd.

As for me, you are perfectly acquainted with my doctrine, my conduct, my designs, my temper, my benevolence, my constancy,

esteeming the sufferings of Israel greater riches than the treasures of Egypt: for he had an eye to the reward.

let us therefore decamp, and bear the reproach of following his example:

if you suffer indignities in the cause of Christ, you are happy: for the glorious spirit of God rests upon you.

Because

Charge those that are rich in this world, not to be elated, not to depend upon their perishable wealth, but upon the God of life, who furnishes us with every thing in plenty for our enjoyment;

he relied upon God; if he be such a favourite, let God then deliver him: for he us'd to say he was the son of God.

besides Esaias saith, "there shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles hope."

it is by him that you believe in God, who has raised him from the dead, and invested him with glory, that your faith and your hope might be in God.

he is the the victim that has expiated our sins: and not ours only, but likewise the sins of the whole world.

and we have seen, and do testify, that the father hath sent the son to be the saviour of the world.

Specially

I declare unto you, he that heareth my doctrine, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come under condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

he that believeth on the son of God, hath the testimony of God thereto: he that does not believe God, impeaches his veracity, because he does not believe the testimony that God gave of his son.
