Jehoshaphat Reigns In Judah

1 And Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his stead, and strengthened himself against Israel.

1 (A)Jehoshaphat his son then became king in his place, and made his position over Israel firm.

1 His son Jehoshaphat became king in his place(A) and strengthened himself against Israel.

1 Asa's son Jehoshaphat succeeded him as king, and he consolidated his authority over Israel

1 Jehoshaphat his son then became king [of Judah] in Asa’s place, and strengthened his position over Israel.

2 And he placed forces in all the fenced cities of Judah, and set garrisons in the land of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim, which Asa his father had taken.

2 He placed troops in all (B)the fortified cities of Judah, and set garrisons in the land of Judah and in the cities of Ephraim (C)which Asa his father had captured.

2 He stationed troops in every fortified city of Judah(B) and set garrisons in the land of Judah and in the cities of Ephraim that his father Asa had captured.(C)

2 by placing troops in all of the fortified citadels through Judah and by establishing garrisons throughout the land of Judah and in the cities that his father Asa had captured.

2 He placed troops in all the fortified cities of Judah, and set garrisons in the land of Judah and in the cities of Ephraim which his father Asa had captured.

3 And the LORD was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of his father David, and sought not unto Baalim;

3 The Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he (a)followed the example of his father David’s earlier days and did not seek the Baals,

3 Now the Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he walked in the former ways of his father David.(a) He did not seek the Baals

3 The LORD was with Jehoshaphat because he followed the example set during his ancestor David's preliminary years by not pursuing the Baals.

3 The Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he (a)followed the example of his father (ancestor) David. He did not seek [to follow] the Baals [the false gods],

4 But sought to the LORD God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel.

4 but sought the God of his father, (b)followed His commandments, (D)and did not act as Israel did.

4 but sought the God of his father and walked by His commands, not according to the practices of Israel.(D)

4 Instead, Jehoshaphat sought the God of his ancestors and obeyed his commands, unlike Israel.

4 but sought the God of his father, and walked in (obeyed) His commandments, and did not act as Israel did.

5 Therefore the LORD stablished the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah brought to Jehoshaphat presents; and he had riches and honour in abundance.

5 So the Lord established the kingdom in his (c)control, and all Judah brought tribute to Jehoshaphat, and (E)he had great riches and honor.

5 So the Lord established the kingdom in his hand. Then all Judah brought him tribute, and he had riches and honor in abundance.(E)

5 Therefore the LORD secured Jehoshaphat's kingdom under his control, with all of Judah paying him tribute, and Jehoshaphat became very wealthy and greatly respected.

5 Therefore the Lord established the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah brought tribute to Jehoshaphat, and he had great wealth and honor.

6 And his heart was lifted up in the ways of the LORD: moreover he took away the high places and groves out of Judah.

6 (d)He took great pride in the ways of the Lord and again (F)removed the high places and the Asherim from Judah.

6 His mind rejoiced in the Lord’s ways, and he again(F) removed the high places and Asherah poles from Judah.(G)

6 He remained committed to following the LORD, and he removed the high places and Asherah poles from Judah.

6 His heart was encouraged and he took great pride in the ways of the Lord; moreover, he again removed the high places [of pagan worship] and the Asherim from Judah.
