The Report Of Saul's Death By The Amalekite

1 Now it happened after the death of Saul, when David had returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, that he stayed two days in Ziklag.

1 Now it came about after (A)the death of Saul, when David had returned from (B)the slaughter of the Amalekites, that David remained two days in Ziklag.

1 Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag;

1 After the death of Saul,(A) David returned from defeating the Amalekites(B) and stayed at Ziklag two days.

1 Shortly after Saul had died, David returned from defeating the Amalekites and remained in Ziklag for two days.

2 On the third day a man came [unexpectedly] from Saul’s camp with his clothes torn and dust on his head [as in mourning]. When he came to David, he bowed to the ground and lay himself face down [in an act of great respect and submission].

2 On the third day, behold, (C)a man came out of the camp from Saul, (D)with his clothes torn and (a)dust on his head. And it came about when he came to David that (E)he fell to the ground and prostrated himself.

2 It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.

2 On the third day a man with torn clothes and dust on his head(C) came from Saul’s camp. When he came to David, he fell to the ground and paid homage.

2 The next day, a man escaped from Saul's camp! With torn clothes and dirty hair, he approached David, fell to the ground, and bowed down to him.

3 Then David asked him, “Where do you come from?” He said, “I have escaped from the camp of Israel.”

3 Then David said to him, “From where do you come?” And he said to him, “I have escaped from the camp of Israel.”

3 And David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped.

3 David asked him, “Where have you come from?”He replied to him, “I’ve escaped from the Israelite camp.”

3 David asked him, "Where did you come from? He answered him, "I just escaped from Israel's encampment."

4 David said to him, “How did it go? Please tell me.” He answered, “The people have fled from the battle. Also, many of the people have fallen and are dead; Saul and Jonathan his son are also dead.”

4 David said to him, “(F)How did things go? Please tell me.” And he said, “The people have fled from the battle, and also many of the people have fallen and are dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.”

4 And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.

4 “What was the outcome? Tell me,” David asked him.“The troops fled from the battle,” he answered. “Many of the troops have fallen and are dead. Also, Saul and his son Jonathan are dead.”(D)

4 David continued questioning him, "How did things go? Please tell me!" He replied, "The army has fled the battlefield, many of the army are wounded or have died, and Saul and his son Jonathan are also dead."

5 So David said to the young man who informed him, “How do you know Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?”

5 So David said to the young man who told him, “How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?”

5 And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son be dead?

5 David asked the young man who had brought him the report, “How do you know Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?”

5 David asked the young man who related the story, "How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?"

6 And the young man who told him explained, “By chance I happened to be on Mount Gilboa, and there was Saul leaning on his spear, and the chariots and horsemen [of the Philistines] were close behind him.

6 The young man who told him said, “By chance I happened to be on (G)Mount Gilboa, and behold, (H)Saul was leaning on his spear. And behold, the chariots and the horsemen pursued him closely.

6 And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.

6 “I happened to be on Mount Gilboa,”(E) he replied, “and there was Saul, leaning on his spear. At that very moment the chariots and the cavalry were closing in on him.

6 The young man who had been relating the story answered, "I happened to be on Mount Gilboa and there was Saul, leaning on his spear! Meanwhile, the chariots and horsemen were rapidly drawing near.

7 When he turned to look behind him, he saw me, and called to me. And I answered, ‘Here I am.’

7 When he looked behind him, he saw me and called to me. And I said, ‘Here I am.’

7 And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called unto me. And I answered, Here am I.

7 When he turned around and saw me, he called out to me, so I answered: I’m at your service.

7 Saul glanced behind him, saw me, and called out to me, so I replied, "Here I am!'

8 He asked me, ‘Who are you?’ I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’

8 He said to me, ‘Who are you?’ And I (b)answered him, ‘(I)I am an Amalekite.’

8 And he said unto me, Who art thou? And I answered him, I am an Amalekite.

8 He asked me, ‘Who are you?’ I told him: I’m an Amalekite.(F)

8 He asked me, "Who are you?' So I answered him, "I'm an Amalekite!'

9 He said to me, ‘Stand up facing me and kill me, for [terrible] agony has come over me, yet I still live [and I will be taken alive].’

9 Then he said to me, ‘Please stand beside me and kill me, for agony has seized me because my (c)life still lingers in me.’

9 He said unto me again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me: for anguish is come upon me, because my life is yet whole in me.

9 Then he begged me, ‘Stand over me and kill me, for I’m mortally wounded,(a) but my life still lingers.’(G)

9 He begged me, "Please come stand here next to me and kill me, because I'm still alive.'

10 So I stood facing him (a)and killed him, because I knew that he could not live after he had fallen. Then I took the crown which was on his head and the (b)band which was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord.”(A)

10 So I stood beside him (J)and killed him, because I knew that he could not live after he had fallen. And (K)I took the crown which was on his head and the bracelet which was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord.”

10 So I stood upon him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord.

10 So I stood over him and killed him because I knew that after he had fallen he couldn’t survive. I took the crown that was on his head and the armband that was on his arm, and I’ve brought them here to my lord.”

10 So I stood next to him and killed him, because I knew that he wouldn't live after he had fallen. I took the crown that had been on his head, along with the bracelet that had been on his arm, and I have brought them to your majesty."

11 Then David grasped his own clothes and tore them [in mourning]; so did all the men who were with him.

11 Then (L)David took hold of his clothes and tore them, and so also did all the men who were with him.

11 Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him:

11 Then David took hold of his clothes and tore them,(H) and all the men with him did the same.

11 On hearing this, David grabbed his clothes and tore them, as did all the men who were attending to him.

12 They mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and Jonathan his son, and for the Lord’s people and the house of (c)Israel, because they had fallen by the sword [in battle].

12 They mourned and wept and (M)fasted until evening for Saul and his son Jonathan and for the people of the Lord and the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.

12 And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.

12 They mourned, wept, and fasted until the evening(I) for those who died by the sword—for Saul, his son Jonathan, the Lord’s people, and the house of Israel.

12 They mourned and wept, and then decided to fast until dusk for Saul, for his son Jonathan, for the army of the LORD, and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen in battle.

David Orders The Amalekite Killed

13 David said to the young man who informed him, “Where are you from?” He answered, “I am the son of a foreigner (resident alien, sojourner), an Amalekite.”

13 David said to the young man who told him, “Where are you from?” And he (d)answered, “(N)I am the son of an alien, an Amalekite.”

13 And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.

13 David inquired of the young man who had brought him the report, “Where are you from?”“I’m the son of a foreigner,” he said. “I’m an Amalekite.”

13 Meanwhile, David asked the young man who had told him the story, "Where are you from?" He answered, "I'm an Amalekite, the son of a foreign man."

14 David said to him, “How is it that you were not afraid to put out your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?”

14 Then David said to him, “How is it you were not afraid (O)to stretch out your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?”

14 And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to destroy the LORD'S anointed?

14 David questioned him, “How is it that you were not afraid to lift your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?”(J)

14 At this David asked him, "How is it that you weren't afraid to raise your hand to strike the LORD's anointed?"

15 David called one of the young men and said, “Go, execute him.” So he struck the Amalekite and he died.

15 And David called one of the young men and said, “Go, (e)cut him down.” (P)So he struck him and he died.

15 And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died.

15 Then David summoned one of his servants and said, “Come here and kill him!” The servant struck him, and he died.(K)

15 Then David called out to one of his young men and ordered him, "Go up to him and cut him down!" So he attacked him and killed him.

16 David said to the [fallen] man, “(d)Your blood is on your own head, for your own mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have killed the Lord’s anointed.’”

16 David said to him, “(Q)Your blood is on your head, for (R)your mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have killed the Lord’s anointed.’”

16 And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain the LORD'S anointed.

16 For David had said to the Amalekite, “Your blood is on your own head(L) because your own mouth testified against you by saying, ‘I killed the Lord’s anointed.’”

16 David told him, "Your blood is on your own head, because your own words testified against you! After all, you said, "I myself have killed the LORD's anointed!'"

17 Then David sang this dirge (funeral song) over Saul and his son Jonathan,

17 Then David (S)chanted with this lament over Saul and Jonathan his son,

17 And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son:

17 David sang the following lament(M) for Saul and his son Jonathan,

17 So David intoned this song of lament about Saul and his son Jonathan,

18 and he told them to teach the sons of Judah, the song of the bow. Behold, it is written in (e)the Book of Jashar:

18 and he told them to teach the sons of Judah the song of the bow; behold, it is written in (T)the book of Jashar.

18 (Also he bade them teach the children of Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.)

18 and he ordered that the Judahites be taught The Song of the Bow. It is written in the Book of Jashar:(b)(N)

18 and he gave orders to teach the descendants of Judah the art of warfare, as is recorded in the Book of Jashar:

19 “Your glory and splendor, O Israel, is slain upon your high places! How the mighty have fallen!

19 (f)Your beauty, O Israel, is slain on your high places!(U)How have the mighty fallen!

19 The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen!

19 The splendor of Israel lies slain on your heights. How the mighty have fallen!

19 "Your beauty, Israel, lies slain on your high places! O, how the valiant have fallen!

20 “Tell it not in Gath,Proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon,Or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice,The daughters of the uncircumcised (pagans) will exult.

20 (V)Tell it not in Gath,Proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon,Or (W)the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice,The daughters of (X)the uncircumcised will exult.

20 Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

20 Do not tell it in Gath, don’t announce it in the marketplaces of Ashkelon,or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice,(O)and the daughters of the uncircumcised will gloat.

20 Don't make it known in Gath! Don't declare it in the avenues of Ashkelon! Otherwise, the daughters of Philistia will rejoice; and the daughters of the uncircumcised will triumph.

21 (f)O mountains of Gilboa,Let not dew or rain be upon you, nor fields with offerings; For there the shield of the mighty was defiled,The shield of Saul, [dry, cracked] not (g)anointed with oil.

21 (Y)O mountains of Gilboa,(Z)Let not dew or rain be on you, nor fields of offerings; For there the shield of the mighty was defiled,The shield of Saul, not (AA)anointed with oil.

21 Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil.

21 Mountains of Gilboa, let no dew or rain be on you,or fields of offerings,(c)for there the shield of the mighty was defiled(P)the shield of Saul, no longer anointed with oil.(Q)

21 Mountains of Gilboa, let no dew or rain fall on you, and may none of your fields be filled with plenty, because in that place the shield of the valiant ones was defiled, the shield of Saul without an anointing with oil.

22 “From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty,The bow of Jonathan did not turn back,And the sword of Saul did not return empty.

22 (AB)From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty,(AC)The bow of Jonathan did not turn back,And the sword of Saul did not return empty.

22 From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty.

22 Jonathan’s bow never retreated,Saul’s sword never returned unstained,(d)from the blood of the slain, from the bodies of the mighty.

22 From the blood of the slain, from the blood of the valiant, Jonathan's bow would not retreat nor would Saul's sword return empty.

23 “Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely and friends in their lives,And in their death they were not separated; They were swifter than eagles,They were stronger than lions.

23 “Saul and Jonathan, beloved and pleasant in their life,And in their death they were not parted;(AD)They were swifter than eagles,(AE)They were stronger than lions.

23 Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.

23 Saul and Jonathan, loved and delightful, they were not parted in life or in death. They were swifter than eagles, stronger than lions.

23 Saul and Jonathan, loved and handsome in life, in death were not separated. Swifter than eagles they were, and more valiant than lions.

24 “O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,Who clothed you (h)luxuriously in scarlet,Who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.

24 “O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,Who clothed you luxuriously in scarlet,Who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.

24 Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with other delights, who put on ornaments of gold upon your apparel.

24 Daughters of Israel, weep for Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with luxurious things, who decked your garments with gold ornaments.(R)

24 Daughters of Israel, weep over Saul! He clothed you in scarlet luxury and decorated your garments with gold.

25 “How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle!Jonathan lies slain upon your high places.

25 (AF)How have the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle!Jonathan is slain on your high places.

25 How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places.

25 How the mighty have fallen in the thick of battle!Jonathan lies slain on your heights.

25 How have the valiant fallen in the tumult of battle! Jonathan lies slain on your high places.

26 “I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; You have been a good friend to me.Your (i)love toward me was more wonderfulThan the love of women.

26 “I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; You have been very pleasant to me.(AG)Your love to me was more wonderfulThan the love of women.

26 I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

26 I grieve for you, Jonathan, my brother. You were such a friend to me.Your love for me was more wonderfulthan the love of women.(S)

26 I am in distress for you, my brother Jonathan. You have been most kind to me. Your love for me was extraordinary beyond love from women.

27 “How the mighty have fallen,And the weapons of war have perished!”

27 (AH)How have the mighty fallen,And (AI)the weapons of war perished!”

27 How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!

27 How the mighty have fallenand the weapons of war have perished!

27 How the valiant have fallen! How the weapons of war are destroyed!"
