And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.
2 Samuel 21:1
Now there was
a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year; and David sought the presence of the Lord. And the Lord said, “It is for Saul and his bloody house, because he put the Gibeonites to death.”
2 Samuel 12:11
Thus says the Lord, ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you from your own household;
I will even take your wives before your eyes and give them to your companion, and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight.
2 Samuel 16:10
But the king said, “
What have I to do with you, O sons of Zeruiah? If he curses, and if the Lord has told him, ‘Curse David,’ then who shall say, ‘Why have you done so?’”
Now do not be grieved or angry
with yourselves, because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life.
As for you,
you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive.
I will harden Pharaoh’s heart that I may multiply My signs and My wonders in the land of Egypt.
1 Samuel 26:19
Now therefore, please let my lord the king listen to the words of his servant. If
the Lord has stirred you up against me, let Him accept an offering; but if it is men, cursed are they before the Lord, for they have driven me out today so that I would have no attachment with the inheritance of the Lord, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’

But David did not
count those twenty years of age and under, because the Lord had said He would multiply Israel as the stars of heaven.
