Herod Kills James And Imprisons Peter

1 About that time King Herod cruelly attacked some who belonged to the church,

1 Now about that time (a)Herod the king laid hands on some who belonged to the church in order to mistreat them.

1 Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.

1 About that time, Herod arrested some people who belonged to the church and mistreated them.

1 Now at that time (a)Herod [Agrippa I] the king [of the Jews] arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to harm them.

2 and he killed James,(A) John’s brother, with the sword.

2 And he (A)had James the brother of John (B)put to death with a sword.

2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.

2 He even had James, the brother of John, killed with a sword.

2 And he had James the brother of John put to death with a sword;

3 When he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter too, during the days of Unleavened Bread.(B)

3 When he saw that it (C)pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. Now (b)it was during (D)the days of Unleavened Bread.

3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)

3 When he saw how this was agreeable to the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter, too. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread.

3 and when he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to have Peter arrested as well. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread [the Passover week].

4 After the arrest, he put him in prison and assigned four squads of four soldiers each to guard him, intending to bring him out to the people after the Passover.

4 When he had seized him, he put him in prison, delivering him to four (c)(E)squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after (F)the Passover to bring him out before the people.

4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.

4 When he arrested Peter, Herod put him in prison and turned him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, planning to bring him out to the people after Passover season.

4 When he had seized Peter, he put him in prison, turning him over to four squads of soldiers of four each to guard him [in rotation throughout the night], planning after the Passover to bring him out before the people [for execution].

5 So Peter was kept in prison, but prayer was being made earnestly to God for him by the church.

5 So Peter was kept in the prison, but prayer for him was being made fervently by the church to God.

5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

5 So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer to God for him was being offered by the assembly.

5 So Peter was kept in prison, but fervent and persistent prayer for him was being made to God by the church.

Peter Rescued By An Angel

6 On the night before Herod was to bring him out for execution, Peter, bound with two chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, while the sentries in front of the door guarded the prison.

6 On (d)the very night when Herod was about to bring him forward, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, (G)bound with two chains, and guards in front of the door were watching over the prison.

6 And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.

6 That very night, before Herod was going to bring him out, Peter, bound with two chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, and guards in front of the door were watching the prisoners.

6 The very night before Herod was to bring him forward, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries were in front of the door guarding the prison.

7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord(C) appeared, and a light shone in the cell. Striking Peter on the side, he woke him up and said, “Quick, get up!” Then the chains fell off his wrists.(D)

7 And behold, (H)an angel of the Lord suddenly (I)appeared and a light shone in the cell; and he struck Peter’s side and woke him up, saying, “Get up quickly.” And (J)his chains fell off his hands.

7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.

7 Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on his side, woke him up, and said, "Get up quickly!" His chains fell from his wrists.

7 Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared [beside him] and a light shone in the cell. The angel struck Peter’s side and awakened him, saying, “Get up quickly!” And the chains fell off his hands.

8 “Get dressed,” the angel told him, “and put on your sandals.” And he did so. “Wrap your cloak around you,” he told him, “and follow me.”

8 And the angel said to him, “Gird yourself and (e)put on your sandals.” And he did so. And he *said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.”

8 And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.

8 Then the angel told him, "Tuck in your shirt and put on your sandals!" He did this. Then the angel told him, "Put on your coat and follow me!"

8 The angel said to him, “Prepare yourself and strap on your sandals [to get ready for whatever may happen].” And he did so. Then the angel told him, “Put on your robe and follow me.”

9 So he went out and followed, and he did not know that what took place through the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision.(E)

9 And he went out and continued to follow, and he did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing (K)a vision.

9 And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.

9 So Peter went out and began to follow him, not realizing that what was being done by the angel was real; he thought he was seeing a vision.

9 And Peter went out following the angel. He did not realize that what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision.

10 After they passed the first and second guard posts, they came to the iron gate that leads into the city, which opened to them by itself. They went outside and passed one street, and immediately the angel left him.(F)

10 When they had passed the first and second guard, they came to the iron gate that leads into the city, which (L)opened for them by itself; and they went out and went along one street, and immediately the angel departed from him.

10 When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.

10 They passed the first guard, then the second, and came to the iron gate that led into the city. It opened by itself for them, and they went outside and proceeded one block when the angel suddenly left him.

10 When they had passed the first guard and the second, they came to the iron gate that leads into the city. Of its own accord it swung open for them; and they went out and went along one street, and at once the angel left him.

11 Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent His angel and rescued me from Herod’s grasp and from all that the Jewish people expected.”(G)

11 When Peter (M)came (f)to himself, he said, “Now I know for sure that (N)the Lord has sent forth His angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all (g)that the Jewish people were expecting.”

11 And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

11 Then Peter came to himself and said, "Now I'm sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from Herod and from everything the Jewish people were expecting!"

11 When Peter came to his senses, he said, “Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent His angel and has rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting [to do to me].”

12 When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John Mark,(a)(H) where many had assembled and were praying.

12 And when he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of (O)John who was also called Mark, where many were gathered together and (P)were praying.

12 And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.

12 When Peter realized what had happened, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John who was also called Mark, where a large number of people had gathered and were praying.

12 When he realized what had happened, he went to the house of (b)Mary the mother of John, who was also called (c)Mark, where many [believers] were gathered together and were praying continually [and had been praying all night].

13 He knocked at the door in the gateway, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer.

13 When he knocked at the door of the gate, (Q)a servant-girl named Rhoda came to answer.

13 And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda.

13 When he knocked at the outer gate, a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer it.

13 When he knocked at the door of the gateway, a servant-girl named Rhoda came to answer.

14 She recognized Peter’s voice, and because of her joy, she did not open the gate but ran in and announced that Peter was standing at the gateway.

14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, (R)because of her joy she did not open the gate, but ran in and announced that Peter was standing in front of the gate.

14 And when she knew Peter's voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.

14 On recognizing Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed that she didn't open the gate but ran back inside and announced that Peter was standing at the gate.

14 Recognizing Peter’s voice, in her joy she failed to open the gate, but ran in and announced that Peter was standing in front of the gateway.

15 “You’re crazy!” they told her. But she kept insisting that it was true. Then they said, “It’s his angel!”(I)

15 They said to her, “You are out of your mind!” But she kept insisting that it was so. They kept saying, “It is (S)his angel.”

15 And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.

15 The other people told her, "You're out of your mind!" But she kept insisting that it was so. Then they said, "It's his angel."

15 They said to her, “You are out of your mind!” But she kept insisting that it was so. They kept saying, “It is his angel!”(A)

16 Peter, however, kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astounded.

16 But Peter continued knocking; and when they had opened the door, they saw him and were amazed.

16 But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.

16 Meanwhile, Peter kept on knocking and knocking. When they opened the gate, they saw him and were amazed.

16 But [meanwhile] Peter continued knocking; and when they opened the door and saw him, they were completely amazed.

17 Motioning to them with his hand(J) to be silent, he explained to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. “Report these things to James(b)(K) and the brothers,” he said. Then he departed and went to a different place.

17 But (T)motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had led him out of the prison. And he said, “Report these things to (h)(U)James and (V)the brethren.” Then he left and went to another place.

17 But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.

17 He motioned to them with his hand to be quiet, and then he told them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. He added, "Tell this to James and the brothers." Then he left and went somewhere else.

17 But motioning to them with his hand to be quiet and listen, he described how the Lord had led him out of the prison. And he said, “Report these things to (d)James and the brothers and sisters.” Then he left and went to another place.

18 At daylight, there was a great commotion(c) among the soldiers as to what could have become of Peter.

18 Now when day came, there was no small disturbance among the soldiers as to (i)what could have become of Peter.

18 Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.

18 When morning came, there was a great commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter.

18 Now when day came, there was no small disturbance among the soldiers over what had become of Peter.

19 After Herod had searched and did not find him, he interrogated the guards and ordered their execution. Then Herod went down from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there.(L)

19 When Herod had searched for him and had not found him, he examined the guards and ordered that they (W)be led away to execution. Then he went down from Judea to (X)Caesarea and was spending time there.

19 And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea, and there abode.

19 Herod searched for him but didn't find him, so he questioned the guards and ordered them to be executed. Then he left Judea, went down to Caesarea, and stayed there for a while.

19 When Herod had searched for him and could not find him, he interrogated the guards and commanded that they be led away to execution. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea [Maritima] and spent some time there.

Herod's Gruesome Death

20 He had been very angry with the Tyrians and Sidonians.(d) Together they presented themselves before him. They won over Blastus, who was in charge of the king’s bedroom, and through him they asked for peace, because their country was supplied with food from the king’s country.(M)

20 Now he was very angry with the people of (Y)Tyre and Sidon; and with one accord they came to him, and having won over Blastus the king’s chamberlain, they were asking for peace, because (Z)their country was fed by the king’s country.

20 And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king's chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was nourished by the king's country.

20 Now Herod had been in a violent quarrel with the people of Tyre and Sidon. So they came to him as a group. After they had won over Blastus, who oversaw security for the king's sleeping quarters, they asked for a peace agreement because their country depended on the king's country for food.

20 Now Herod [Agrippa I] was (e)extremely angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon; and their delegates came to him in a united group, and after persuading Blastus, (f)the king’s chamberlain [to support their cause], they asked for peace, because their country was fed by [imports of grain and other goods from] the king’s country.

21 So on an appointed day, dressed in royal robes and seated on the throne, Herod delivered a public address to them.

21 On an appointed day Herod, having put on his royal apparel, took his seat on the (j)rostrum and began delivering an address to them.

21 And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.

21 Therefore, at a set time Herod put on his royal robes, sat down on the royal seat, and made a speech to them.

21 On an appointed day Herod dressed himself in his (g)royal robes, sat on his throne (tribunal, rostrum) and began delivering a speech to the people.

22 The assembled people began to shout, “It’s the voice of a god and not of a man!”

22 The people kept crying out, “The voice of a god and not of a man!”

22 And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.

22 The people kept shouting, "This is the voice of a god, not of a man!"

22 The assembled people kept shouting, “It is the voice of a god and not of a man!”

23 At once an angel of the Lord(N) struck him because he did not give the glory to God, and he became infected with worms and died.(O)

23 And immediately (AA)an angel of the Lord struck him because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and (k)died.

23 And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

23 Immediately the angel of the Lord struck him down because he did not give glory to God, and he was eaten by worms and died.

23 And at once an angel of the Lord struck him down because he did not give God the glory [and instead permitted himself to be worshiped], and (h)he was eaten by worms and died [five days later].

24 Then God’s message flourished and multiplied.(P)

24 But (AB)the word of the Lord continued to grow and to be multiplied.

24 But the word of God grew and multiplied.

24 But the word of God continued to grow and spread.

24 But the word of the Lord [the good news about salvation through Christ] continued to grow and spread [increasing in effectiveness].
