Attacked By A Mob In Thessalonica

1 After passing through Amphipolis and Apollonia, Paul and Silas came to Thessalonica. Here the Jews had a Synagogue;

1 Now when they had traveled through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to (A)Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.

1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:

1 Then they traveled through Amphipolis and Apollonia and came to Thessalonica,(A) where there was a Jewish synagogue.

1 Paul and Silas traveled through Amphipolis and Apollonia and came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue.

2 And, following his usual custom, Paul joined them, and for three Sabbaths addressed them, drawing his arguments from the Scriptures.

2 And (B)according to Paul’s custom, he went to them, and for three (C)Sabbaths reasoned with them from (D)the Scriptures,

2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

2 As usual, Paul went to the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days reasoned with them from the Scriptures,(B)

2 As usual, Paul entered there and on three Sabbaths discussed the Scriptures with them.

3 He laid before them and explained that the Christ must undergo suffering and rise from the dead; and "It is this man," he declared, "who is the Christ--this Jesus about whom I am telling you."

3 (a)explaining and (b)giving evidence that the (c)Christ (E)had to suffer and (F)rise again from the dead, and saying, “(G)This Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you is the (d)Christ.”

3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

3 explaining and showing that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead: “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah.”(C)

3 He explained and showed them that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead: "This very Jesus whom I proclaim to you is the Messiah."

4 Some of the people were convinced, and threw in their lot with Paul and Silas, as did also a large body of Greeks who were accustomed to join in the Jewish services, and a great number of women belonging to the leading families.

4 (H)And some of them were persuaded and joined (I)Paul and Silas, (e)along with a large number of the (J)God-fearing (K)Greeks and (f)a number of the (L)leading women.

4 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

4 Then some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, including a great number of God-fearing Greeks, as well as a number(a) of the leading women.(D)

4 Some of them were persuaded and began to be associated with Paul and Silas, especially a large crowd of devout Greeks and the wives of many prominent men.

Riot In The City

5 But the Jews, becoming jealous, engaged some worthless fellows from the streets, and, getting a mob together, kept the city in an uproar. They attacked Jason's house, with the intention of bringing Paul and Silas before the Popular Assembly;

5 But (M)the Jews, becoming jealous and taking along some wicked men from the market place, formed a mob and set the city in an uproar; and attacking the house of (N)Jason, they were seeking to bring them out to the people.

5 But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

5 But the Jews became jealous, and they brought together some scoundrels from the marketplace, formed a mob, and started a riot in the city. Attacking Jason’s house, they searched for them to bring them out to the public assembly.(E)

5 But the Jewish leaders became jealous, and they took some contemptible characters who used to hang out in the public square, formed a mob, and started a riot in the city. They attacked Jason's home and searched it for Paul and Silas in order to bring them out to the people.

6 And, not finding them there, they proceeded to drag Jason and some of the Brethren before the City Magistrates, shouting out: "These men, who have turned the world upside down, have now come here,

6 When they did not find them, they began (O)dragging Jason and some brethren before the city authorities, shouting, “These men who have upset (g)(P)the world have come here also;

6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

6 When they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city officials, shouting, “These men who have turned the world upside down have come here too,

6 When they didn't find them, they dragged Jason and some other brothers before the city officials and shouted, "These fellows who have turned the world upside down have come here, too,

7 And have been harbored by Jason! They say that some one else is king--a man called Jesus!"

7 (h)and Jason (Q)has welcomed them, and they all act (R)contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.”

7 Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

7 and Jason has received them as guests! They are all acting contrary to Caesar’s decrees,(F) saying that there is another king—Jesus!”(G)

7 and Jason has welcomed them as his guests. All of them oppose the emperor's decrees by saying that there is another king Jesus!"

8 On hearing this, the people and the City Magistrates were much concerned;

8 They stirred up the crowd and the city authorities who heard these things.

8 And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

8 The Jews stirred up the crowd and the city officials who heard these things.

8 The crowd and the city officials were upset when they heard this,

9 And, before letting them go, they took bail from Jason and the others.

9 And when they had received a (i)pledge from (S)Jason and the others, they released them.

9 And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.

9 So taking a security bond from Jason and the others, they released them.

9 but after they had gotten a bond from Jason and the others, they let them go.

Paul And Silas In Berea

10 That very night the Brethren sent Paul and Silas off to Beroea; and on reaching that place, they went to the Jewish Synagogue.

10 (T)The brethren immediately sent (U)Paul and Silas away by night to (V)Berea, (j)and when they arrived, they went into (W)the synagogue of the Jews.

10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

10 As soon as it was night, the brothers sent Paul and Silas off to Berea.(H) On arrival, they went into the synagogue of the Jews.

10 That night the brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the Jewish synagogue.

11 These Jews of Beroea were better disposed than those in Thessalonica, for they welcomed the Message with great readiness, and daily examined the Scriptures to see if what was said was true.

11 Now these were more noble-minded than those in (X)Thessalonica, (k)for they received the word with (l)great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.

11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

11 The people here were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, since they welcomed the message with eagerness and examined the Scriptures(I) daily to see if these things were so.

11 These people were more receptive than those in Thessalonica. They were very willing to receive the message, and every day they carefully examined the Scriptures to see if those things were so.

12 As a consequence, many of them became believers in Christ, besides a considerable number of Greek women of position, and of men also.

12 Therefore (Y)many of them believed, (m)along with a number of (Z)prominent Greek (AA)women and men.

12 Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

12 Consequently, many of them believed, including a number of the prominent Greek women as well as men.

12 Many of them believed, including a large number of prominent Greek women and men.

13 But, when the Jews of Thessalonica found out that God's Message had been delivered by Paul at Beroea, they came there too, exciting and disturbing the minds of the people.

13 But when the Jews of (AB)Thessalonica found out that the word of God had been proclaimed by Paul in (AC)Berea also, they came there as well, agitating and stirring up the crowds.

13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.

13 But when the Jews from Thessalonica found out that God’s message had been proclaimed by Paul at Berea, they came there too, agitating and disturbing(b) the crowds.

13 But when the Jewish leaders in Thessalonica found out that the word of God had been proclaimed by Paul also in Berea, they went there to upset and incite the crowds.

14 Immediately upon that, the Brethren sent Paul off on his way to the sea coast, but both Silas and Timothy stayed behind in Beroea.

14 Then immediately (AD)the brethren sent Paul out to go as far as the sea; and (AE)Silas and (AF)Timothy remained there.

14 And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.

14 Then the brothers immediately sent Paul away to go to the sea, but Silas and Timothy(J) stayed on there.

14 Then the brothers immediately sent Paul away to the coast, but Silas and Timothy stayed there.

15 The friends who escorted Paul took him as far as Athens, and, after receiving a message for Silas and Timothy to join him as quickly as possible, they started on their return.

15 Now (AG)those who escorted Paul brought him as far as (AH)Athens; and receiving a command for (AI)Silas and Timothy to (AJ)come to him as soon as possible, they left.

15 And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.

15 Those who escorted Paul brought him as far as Athens, and after receiving instructions for Silas and Timothy to come to him as quickly as possible, they departed.(K)

15 The men who escorted Paul took him all the way to Athens and, after receiving instructions to have Silas and Timothy join him as soon as possible, they left.

Paul In Athens

16 While Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his heart was stirred at seeing the whole city full of idols.

16 Now while Paul was waiting for them at (AK)Athens, his spirit was being provoked within him as he was observing the city full of idols.

16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was troubled within him when he saw that the city was full of idols.

16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was deeply disturbed to see the city full of idols.

17 So he argued in the Synagogue with the Jews and with those who joined in their worship, as well as daily in the public Square with those who happened to be there.

17 So he was reasoning (AL)in the synagogue with the Jews and (AM)the God-fearing Gentiles, and in the market place every day with those who happened to be present.

17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and with those who worshiped God and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there.(L)

17 So he began holding discussions in the synagogue with the Jews and other worshipers, as well as every day in the public square with anyone who happened to be there.

18 Among others, some Epicurean and Stoic Philosophers joined issue with him. Some would ask "What is this prater wanting to make out?", while others would say "He seems to be a Preacher of foreign Deities." (This was because he was telling the Good News about Jesus and the Resurrection).

18 And also some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers were (n)conversing with him. Some were saying, “What would (AN)this (o)idle babbler wish to say?” Others, “He seems to be a proclaimer of strange deities,”—because he was preaching (AO)Jesus and the resurrection.

18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

18 Then also, some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers argued with him. Some said, “What is this pseudo-intellectual(c) trying to say?”Others replied, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign deities”—because he was telling the good news about Jesus and the Resurrection.(d)(M)

18 Some Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also debated with him. Some asked, "What is this blabbermouth trying to say?" while others said, "He seems to be preaching about foreign gods." This was because Paul was telling the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.

19 So they laid hold of him and took him to the Court of Areopagus. "May we hear," they asked, "what new teaching this is which you are giving?

19 And they (AP)took him and brought him (p)to the (q)(AQ)Areopagus, saying, “May we know what (AR)this new teaching is (r)which you are proclaiming?

19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

19 They took him and brought him to the Areopagus,(e) and said, “May we learn about this new teaching you’re speaking of?(N)

19 Then they took him, brought him before the Areopagus, and asked, "May we know what this new teaching of yours is?

20 For you are bringing some strange things to our notice, and we should like to know what they mean."

20 For you are bringing some strange things to our ears; so we want to know what these things mean.”

20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

20 For what you say sounds strange to us, and we want to know what these ideas mean.”

20 It sounds rather strange to our ears, and we would like to know what it means."

21 (All Athenians and the foreigners staying in the city found no time for anything else but telling, or listening to, the last new thing.)

21 (Now all the Athenians and the strangers (AS)visiting there used to spend their time in nothing other than telling or hearing something new.)

21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

21 Now all the Athenians and the foreigners residing there spent their time on nothing else but telling or hearing something new.

21 Now all the Athenians and the foreigners living there used to spend their time doing nothing else other than listening to the latest ideas or repeating them.

Paul Speaks To The Areopagus

22 So Paul took his stand in the middle of the Court, and said- -"Men of Athens, on every hand I see signs of your being very devout.

22 So Paul stood in the midst of the (s)Areopagus and said, “Men of (AT)Athens, I observe that you are very (AU)religious in all respects.

22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

22 Then Paul stood in the middle of the Areopagus and said: “Men of Athens! I see that you are extremely religious in every respect.

22 So Paul stood up in front of the Areopagus and said, "Men of Athens, I see that you are very religious in every way.

23 For as I was going about, looking at your sacred shrines, I came upon an altar with this inscription--'To an Unknown God.' What, therefore, you worship in ignorance, that I am now proclaiming to you.

23 For while I was passing through and examining the (AV)objects of your worship, I also found an altar with this inscription, ‘TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.’ Therefore what (AW)you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you.

23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

23 For as I was passing through and observing the objects of your worship, I even found an altar on which was inscribed: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you.

23 For as I was walking around and looking closely at the objects you worship, I even found an altar with this written on it: "To an unknown god.' So I am telling you about the unknown object you worship.

24 The God who made the world and all things that are in it-- he, Lord as he is of Heaven and Earth, does not dwell in temples made by hands,

24 (AX)The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is (AY)Lord of heaven and earth, does not (AZ)dwell in temples made with hands;

24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

24 The God who made the world and everything in it(O)—He is Lord of heaven and earth(P) and does not live in shrines made by hands.(Q)

24 The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth. He doesn't live in shrines made by human hands,

25 Nor yet do human hands minister to his wants, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives, to all, life, and breath, and all things.

25 nor is He served by human hands, (BA)as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things;

25 Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

25 Neither is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything,(R) since He Himself gives everyone life and breath and all things.(S)

25 and he isn't served by people as if he needed anything. He himself gives everyone life, breath, and everything else.

26 He made all races of the earth's surface--fixing a time for their rise and fall, and the limits of their settlements--

26 and (BB)He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having (BC)determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation,

26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

26 From one man(f) He has made every nationality to live over the whole earth and has determined their appointed times and the boundaries of where they live.(T)

26 From one man he made every nation of humanity to live all over the earth, fixing the seasons of the year and the national boundaries within which they live,

27 That they might search for God, if by any means they might feel their way to him and find him. And yet he is not really far from any one of us;

27 that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, (BD)though He is not far from each one of us;

27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

27 He did this so they might seek God, and perhaps they might reach out and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.(U)

27 so that they might look for God, somehow reach for him, and find him. Of course, he is never far from any one of us.

28 For in him we live and move and are. To use the words of some of your own poets--'His offspring, too, are we.'

28 for (BE)in Him we live and move and (t)exist, as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we also are His children.’

28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

28 For in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’(g)(V)

28 For we live, move, and exist because of him, as some of your own poets have said: ""Since we are his children, too.'

29 Therefore, as the offspring of God, we must not think that the Deity has any resemblance to anything made of gold, or silver, or stone--a work of human art and imagination.

29 Being then the children of God, we (BF)ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and thought of man.

29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

29 Being God’s offspring then, we shouldn’t think that the divine nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image fashioned by human art and imagination.(W)

29 So if we are God's children, we shouldn't think that the divine being is like gold, silver, or stone, or is an image carved by humans using their own imagination and skill.

30 True, God looked with indulgence on the days of men's ignorance, but now he is announcing to every one everywhere the need for repentance,

30 Therefore having (BG)overlooked (BH)the times of ignorance, God is (BI)now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent,

30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

30 “Therefore, having overlooked(X) the times of ignorance, God now commands all people everywhere to repent,

30 Though God has overlooked those times of ignorance, he now commands everyone everywhere to repent,

31 Because he has fixed a day on which he intends to 'judge the world with justice,' by a man whom he has appointed--and of this he has given all men a pledge by raising this man from the dead."

31 because He has fixed (BJ)a day in which (BK)He will judge (u)(BL)the world in righteousness (v)through a Man whom He has (BM)appointed, having furnished proof to all men (w)by (BN)raising Him from the dead.”

31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

31 because He has set a day when He is going to judge the world in righteousness by the Man He has appointed. He has provided proof of this to everyone by raising Him from the dead.”(Y)

31 because he has set a day when he is going to judge the world with justice through a man whom he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead."

32 On hearing of a resurrection of the dead, some began jeering, but others said that they would hear what he had to say about that another time.

32 Now when they heard of (BO)the resurrection of the dead, some began to sneer, but others said, “We shall hear you (x)again concerning this.”

32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

32 When they heard about resurrection of the dead, some began to ridicule him. But others said, “We’d like to hear from you again about this.”

32 When they heard about a resurrection of the dead, some began joking about it, while others said, "We will hear you again about this."

33 And so Paul left the Court.

33 So Paul went out of their midst.

33 So Paul departed from among them.

33 Then Paul left their presence.

33 And so Paul left the meeting.

34 There were, however, some men who joined him, and became believers in Christ. Among them were Dionysius, a member of the Court of Areopagus, a woman named Damaris, and several others.

34 But some men joined him and believed, among whom also were Dionysius the (BP)Areopagite and a woman named Damaris and others with them.

34 Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

34 However, some men joined him and believed, including Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

34 Some men joined him and became believers. With them were Dionysius, who was a member of the Areopagus, a woman named Damaris, and some others along with them.
