2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
2 He said to them, “(E)Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said to him, “No, (F)we have not even heard whether (a)there is a Holy Spirit.”
2 and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”“No,” they told him, “we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”(B)

3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
3 “Then what baptism were you baptized with?” he asked them.“With John’s baptism,” they replied.
3 He then asked, "Then into what were you baptized?" They answered, "Into John's baptism."
3 And he asked, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.”
4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
4 Paul said, “(H)John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people (I)to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”

5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
5 After hearing this, they were baptized [again, this time] in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

8 And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.
8 And he entered (N)the synagogue and continued speaking out boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading them (O)about the kingdom of God.

8 And he went into the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, reasoning and arguing and persuading them about the kingdom of God.
9 But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.
9 But when (P)some were becoming hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of (Q)the Way before the (c)people, he withdrew from them and took away (R)the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.
9 But when some became hardened and would not believe, slandering the Way in front of the crowd, he withdrew from them and met separately with the disciples, conducting discussions every day in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.(G)
9 But when some people became stubborn, refused to believe, and slandered the Way in front of the people, Paul left them, taking his disciples away with him, and held daily discussions in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.
9 But when some were becoming hardened and disobedient [to the word of God], discrediting and speaking evil of (a)the Way (Jesus, Christianity) before the congregation, Paul left them, taking the disciples with him, and went on holding (b)daily discussions in the lecture hall of Tyrannus [instead of in the synagogue].
10 And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.
10 This took place for (S)two years, so that all who lived in (d)(T)Asia heard (U)the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.
10 And this went on for two years, so that all the inhabitants of Asia, both Jews and Greeks, heard the message about the Lord.(H)

Would-Be Exorcists
12 So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.
12 (W)so that handkerchiefs or aprons were even carried from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and (X)the evil spirits went out.
12 so that even facecloths or work aprons(a) that had touched his skin were brought to the sick, and the diseases left them, and the evil spirits came out of them.(I)
12 When handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched his skin were taken to the sick, their diseases left them and evil spirits went out of them.
12 so that even handkerchiefs or face-towels or aprons that had touched his skin were brought to the sick, and their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out [of them].
13 Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.
13 But also some of the Jewish (Y)exorcists, who went from place to place, attempted to name over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, “I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches.”
13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists attempted to pronounce the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I command you by the Jesus that Paul preaches!”(J)
13 Then some Jews who went around trying to drive out demons attempted to use the name of the Lord Jesus on those who had evil spirits, saying, "I command you by that Jesus whom Paul preaches!"
13 Then some of the traveling Jewish exorcists also attempted to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “I implore you and solemnly command you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches!”
14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.
14 Seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this.
14 Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this.

15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?
15 And the evil spirit answered and said to them, “I recognize Jesus, and I know about Paul, but who are you?”
15 The evil spirit answered them, “I know Jesus, and I recognize Paul—but who are you?”
15 But the evil spirit told them, "Jesus I know, and I am getting acquainted with Paul, but who are you?"
15 But the evil spirit retorted, “I know and recognize and acknowledge Jesus, and I know about Paul, but as for you, who are you?”
16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
16 And the man, in whom was the evil spirit, leaped on them and subdued all of them and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
16 Then the man who had the evil spirit leaped on them, overpowered them all, and prevailed against them, so that they ran out of that house naked and wounded.
16 Then the man with the evil spirit jumped on them, got the better of them, and so violently overpowered all of them that they fled out of the house naked and bruised.
17 And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
17 This became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived in (Z)Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all and the name of the Lord Jesus was being magnified.
17 This became known to everyone who lived in Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks. Then fear fell on all of them, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.(K)
17 When this became known to everyone living in Ephesus, Jews and Greeks alike, they all became terrified, and the name of the Lord Jesus began to be held in high honor.
17 This became known to all who lived in Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks. And fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified and exalted.
18 And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.
18 Many also of those who had believed kept coming, confessing and disclosing their practices.
18 And many who had become believers came confessing and disclosing their practices,
18 Many who became believers kept coming to confess and talk about what they had been doing.
18 Many of those who had become believers were coming, confessing and disclosing their [former sinful] practices.
19 Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.
19 And many of those who practiced magic brought their books together and began burning them in the sight of everyone; and they counted up the price of them and found it (f)fifty thousand (AA)pieces of silver.
19 while many of those who had practiced magic collected their books and burned them in front of everyone. So they calculated their value and found it to be 50,000 pieces of silver.
19 Moreover, many people who had practiced occult arts gathered their books and burned them in front of everybody. They estimated their value and found them to have been worth 50,000 silver coins.
A Major Riot In Ephesus
21 After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome.
21 Now after these things were finished, Paul purposed in the (h)Spirit to (AD)go to Jerusalem (AE)after he had passed through (AF)Macedonia and (AG)Achaia, saying, “After I have been there, (AH)I must also see Rome.”
21 When these events were over, Paul resolved in the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem. “After I’ve been there,” he said, “I must see Rome as well!”(M)
21 After these things had happened, Paul decided to go through Macedonia and Achaia and then to go on to Jerusalem. "After I have gone there," he told them, "I must also see Rome."
22 So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.
22 And having sent into (AI)Macedonia two of (AJ)those who ministered to him, (AK)Timothy and (AL)Erastus, he himself stayed in (i)(AM)Asia for a while.
22 So after sending two of those who assisted him, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.(N)
22 Then he sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, while he himself stayed in Asia a while longer.
A Riot In Ephesus
24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen;
24 For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of (j)Artemis, (AO)was bringing no little (k)business to the craftsmen;
24 For a person named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis,(c) provided a great deal of(d) business for the craftsmen.
24 By making silver shrines of Artemis, a silversmith named Demetrius provided a large income for skilled workers.
24 Now a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of [the goddess] Artemis (Diana), was bringing no small profit to the craftsmen.
25 Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.
25 these he gathered together with the workmen of similar trades, and said, “Men, you know that our prosperity (l)depends upon this business.
25 When he had assembled them, as well as the workers engaged in this type of business, he said: “Men, you know that our prosperity is derived from this business.
25 He called a meeting of these men and others who were engaged in similar trades and said, "Men, you well know that we get a good income from this business.
25 These [craftsmen] he called together, along with the workmen of similar trades, and said, “Men, you are well aware that we make a good living from this business.
26 Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:
26 You see and hear that not only in (AP)Ephesus, but in almost all of (m)(AQ)Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that (n)(AR)gods made with hands are no gods at all.
26 You both see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this man Paul has persuaded and misled a considerable number of people by saying that gods made by hand are not gods!(P)
26 You also see and hear that, not only in Ephesus, but almost all over Asia, this man Paul has won over and taken away a large crowd by telling them that gods made by human hands are not gods at all.
26 You see and hear that not only at Ephesus, but almost all over [the province of] Asia, this Paul has persuaded [people to believe his teaching] and has misled a large number of people, claiming that gods made by [human] hands are not really gods at all.
27 So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.
27 Not only is there danger that this trade of ours fall into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess (o)Artemis be regarded as worthless and that she whom all of (p)(AS)Asia and (AT)the (q)world worship will even be dethroned from her magnificence.”
27 So not only do we run a risk that our business may be discredited, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be despised and her magnificence come to the verge of ruin—the very one all of Asia and the world adore.”
27 There is a danger not only that our business will lose its reputation but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be brought into disrepute and that she will be robbed of her majesty that brought all Asia and the world to worship her."
28 And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
28 When they heard this and were filled with rage, they began crying out, saying, “Great is (r)Artemis of the (AU)Ephesians!”
28 When they had heard this, they were filled with rage and began to cry out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
28 When they heard this, they became furious and began to shout, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"
28 When they heard this, they were filled with rage, and they began shouting, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
29 And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.
29 The city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed (s)with one accord into the theater, dragging along (AV)Gaius and (AW)Aristarchus, Paul’s traveling (AX)companions from (AY)Macedonia.
29 So the city was filled with confusion, and they rushed all together into the amphitheater, dragging along Gaius(Q) and Aristarchus,(R) Macedonians who were Paul’s traveling companions.
29 The city was filled with confusion, and the people rushed into the theater together, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Paul's fellow travelers from Macedonia.
29 Then the city was filled with confusion; and people rushed together [as a group] into the amphitheater, dragging along with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul’s traveling companions.
30 And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.
30 Though Paul wanted to go in before the people, the disciples did not let him.
30 Paul wanted to go into the crowd, but the disciples wouldn't let him.
30 Paul wanted to go into the [pagan] assembly, but the disciples would not let him.
31 And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre.
31 Also some of the (u)Asiarchs who were friends of his sent to him and repeatedly urged him not to (v)venture into the theater.
31 Even some of the provincial officials of Asia, who were his friends, sent word to him, pleading with him not to take a chance by going(e) into the amphitheater.
31 Even some officials of the province of Asia who were his friends sent him a message urging him not to risk his life in the theater.
31 Even some of the Asiarchs (officials) who were his friends sent word to him and repeatedly warned him not to venture into the amphitheater.
32 Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.
32 (BA)So then, some were shouting one thing and some another, for the (w)assembly was in confusion and the majority did not know (x)for what reason they had come together.
32 Meanwhile, some were shouting one thing and some another, because the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together.
32 Meanwhile, some were shouting one thing and some another, since the crowd was confused, and most of them didn't know why they were meeting.
33 And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people.
33 Some of the crowd (y)concluded it was Alexander, since the Jews had put him forward; and having (BB)motioned with his hand, Alexander was intending to make a defense to the (z)assembly.
33 Then some of the crowd gave Alexander advice when the Jews pushed him to the front. So motioning with his hand, Alexander wanted to make his defense to the people.(S)
33 Some of the crowd concluded it was because of Alexander, since the Jews had pushed him to the front. So Alexander motioned for silence and tried to make a defense before the people.
33 Some of the crowd advised Alexander [to speak], since the Jews had pushed him forward; and Alexander motioned with his hand [for attention] and intended to make a defense to the people.
34 But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
34 But when they recognized that he was a Jew, a single outcry arose from them all as they shouted for about two hours, “Great is (aa)Artemis of the Ephesians!”
34 But when they recognized that he was a Jew, a united cry went up from all of them for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
34 But when they found out that he was a Jew, they all started to shout in unison for about two hours, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"
34 But when they realized that he was a Jew, a single outcry went up from the crowd as they shouted for about two hours, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
35 And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?
35 After quieting the crowd, the town clerk *said, “Men of (BC)Ephesus, what man is there after all who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is guardian of the temple of the great (ab)Artemis and of the image which fell down from (ac)heaven?
35 However, when the city clerk had calmed the crowd down, he said, “Men of Ephesus! What man is there who doesn’t know that the city of the Ephesians is the temple guardian of the great(f) Artemis, and of the image that fell from heaven?
35 When the city recorder had quieted the crowd, he said, "Men of Ephesus, who in the world doesn't know that this city of Ephesus is the keeper of the temple of the great Artemis and of the statue that fell down from heaven?
36 Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.
36 So, since these are undeniable facts, you ought to keep calm and to do nothing rash.
36 Therefore, since these things are undeniable, you must keep calm and not do anything rash.
36 Since these things cannot be denied, you must be quiet and not do anything reckless.
36 So, since these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and stay calm and not do anything rash.
37 For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess.
37 For you have brought these men here who are neither (BD)robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess.
37 For you have brought these men here, although they neither rob temples nor blaspheme our goddess.
37 For you have brought these men here who are neither temple robbers nor blasphemers of our goddess.
38 Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another.
38 So then, if Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a complaint against any man, the courts are in session and (ad)(BE)proconsuls are available; let them bring charges against one another.
38 So if Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a case against anyone, the courts are in session, and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another.(T)
38 So if Demetrius and his workers have a charge against anyone, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. They should accuse one another there.
38 So then, if Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are in session and proconsuls are available; let them bring charges against one another there.
39 But if ye inquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly.
39 But if you want something else, it must be decided in a legal assembly.
39 But if you want anything else, it must be settled in the regular assembly,
39 But if you want anything beyond this, it will be settled in the lawful assembly.
40 For we are in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse.
40 For indeed we are in danger of being accused of a riot in connection with today’s events, since there is no real cause for it, and in this connection we will be unable to account for this disorderly gathering.”
40 In fact, we run a risk of being charged with rioting for what happened today, since there is no justification that we can give as a reason for this disorderly gathering.”
40 because we are in danger of being charged with rioting today, and there is no good reason we can give to justify this commotion."
40 For we are running the risk of being accused of rioting in regard to today’s events, and since there is no reason for it, we will be unable to give an account and justify this disorderly gathering.”
