Pentecost And The Coming Of The Holy Spirit

1 SO when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with unanimity assembled together.

1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

1 When (A)the day of Pentecost (a)had come, they were all together in one place.

1 When the day of Pentecost had arrived, they were all together in one place.(A)

1 When the day of Pentecost was being celebrated, all of them were together in one place.

2 And there came suddenly from heaven a sound as it were of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.

2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled (B)the whole house where they were sitting.

2 Suddenly a sound like that of a violent rushing wind(B) came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were staying.(C)

2 Suddenly, a sound like the roar of a mighty windstorm came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.

3 And there was an appearance to them of divided tongues, as of fire, and it rested on every one of them.

3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire (b)distributing themselves, and (c)they (d)rested on each one of them.

3 And tongues, like flames of fire that were divided, appeared to them and rested on each one of them.

3 They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated, and one rested on each of them.

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them power to express themselves.

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

4 And they were all (C)filled with the Holy Spirit and began to (D)speak with other (e)tongues, as the Spirit was giving them (f)utterance.

4 Then they were all filled(D) with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different languages, as the Spirit gave them ability for speech.(E)

4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in foreign languages as the Spirit gave them that ability.

5 Now there were dwelling at Jerusalem, Jews, men of piety, from every nation under heaven.

5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.

5 Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, (E)devout men from every nation under heaven.

5 There were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation(F) under heaven.

5 Now devout Jews from every nation on earth were living in Jerusalem.

6 And when this report spread, the multitude collected around them, and were overwhelmed with astonishment, because they heard them speaking every one in his own peculiar dialect.

6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

6 And when (F)this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own (g)language.

6 When this sound occurred, a crowd came together and was confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language.

6 When that sound came, a crowd quickly gathered, startled because each one heard the disciples speaking in his own language.

7 And they were all amazed, and wondered, saying one to another, Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?

7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?

7 (G)They were amazed and astonished, saying, “(h)Why, are not all these who are speaking (H)Galileans?

7 And they were astounded and amazed, saying,(a) “Look, aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?(G)

7 Stunned and amazed, they asked, "All of these people who are speaking are Galileans, aren't they?

8 And how do we hear every man in our own peculiar dialect, in which from our birth we were brought up?

8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?

8 And how is it that we each hear them in our own (i)language (j)to which we were born?

8 How is it that each of us can hear in our own native language?

8 So how is it that each one of us hears them speaking in his own native language:

9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and they who inhabit Mesopotamia, and Judea, and Cappadocia, Pontus, and Asia,

9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,

9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and (I)Cappadocia, (J)Pontus and (k)(K)Asia,

9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites; those who live in Mesopotamia, in Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,(H)

9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, residents of Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia,

10 and Phrygia, and Pamphylia, Egypt, and the parts of Lybia adjoining Cyrene, and the sojourners, who are Romans, both Jews and proselytes,

10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,

10 (L)Phrygia and (M)Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya around (N)Cyrene, and (l)(O)visitors from Rome, both Jews and (m)(P)proselytes,

10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,(I)

10 Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, the district of Libya near Cyrene, Jewish and proselyte visitors from Rome,

11 Cretans and Arabians, we hear them speaking in our own several tongues the marvellous things of God.

11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God.”

11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking the magnificent acts of God in our own languages.”

11 Cretans, and Arabs, listening to them talk in our own languages about the great deeds of God?"

12 And they were all amazed, and much perplexed, and knew not what to think, saying one to another, What can this mean?

12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?

12 And (Q)they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”

12 They were all astounded and perplexed, saying to one another, “What could this be?”

12 All of them continued to be stunned and puzzled, and they kept asking one another, "What can this mean?"

13 But others scoffing said, These men are brimful of sweet wine.

13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.

13 But others were mocking and saying, “(R)They are full of (n)sweet wine.”

13 But some sneered and said, “They’re full of new wine!”(J)

13 But others kept saying in derision, "They're drunk on sweet wine!"

Peter's Sermon On The Day Of Pentecost

14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice, and addressed them; Men of Judea, and all ye who dwell at Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to my words:

14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:

14 But Peter, (o)taking his stand with (S)the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words.

14 But Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them: “Men of Judah and all you residents of Jerusalem, let me explain this(b) to you and pay attention to my words.

14 Then Peter stood up among the eleven apostles and raised his voice to address them:

15 for these men are not, as ye suppose, drunk, for it is only the third hour of the day.

15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.

15 For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, (T)for it is only the (p)third hour of the day;

15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it’s only nine in the morning.(c)

15 "Men of Judea and everyone living in Jerusalem! You must understand something, so pay close attention to my words. These men are not drunk as you suppose, for it's only nine o'clock in the morning.

16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel;

16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;

16 but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel:

16 On the contrary, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

16 Rather, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

17 "And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour our of my spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

17 (U)And it shall be in the last days,’ God says,That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all (q)mankind;And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,And your young men shall see visions,And your old men shall dream dreams;

17 And it will be in the last days, says God,that I will pour out My Spirit on all humanity;then your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.(K)

17 "In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on everyone. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.

18 and upon my servants and my handmaidens in those days will I pour out of my spirit; and they shall prophesy:

18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

18 Even on My bondslaves, both men and women,I will in those days pour forth of My SpiritAnd they shall prophesy.

18 I will even pour out My Spiriton My male and female slaves in those days, and they will prophesy.(L)

18 In those days I will even pour out my Spirit on my slaves, men and women alike, and they will prophesy.

19 and I will perform prodigies in the heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke.

19 And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:

19 And I will grant wonders in the sky aboveAnd signs on the earth below,Blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke.

19 I will display wonders in the heaven aboveand signs on the earth below:blood and fire and a cloud of smoke.

19 I will display wonders in the sky above and signs on the earth below: blood, fire, and clouds of smoke.

20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and illustrious day of the Lord come.

20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:

20 The sun will be turned into darknessAnd the moon into blood,Before the great and glorious day of the Lord shall come.

20 The sun will be turned to darknessand the moon to blood(M)before the great and remarkable Day of the Lord(N) comes.

20 The sun will become dark, and the moon turn to blood, before the coming of the great and glorious Day of the Lord.

21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the Lord shall be saved."

21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

21 And it shall be that (V)everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

21 Then everyone who callson the name of the Lord will be saved.(O)(d)

21 Then whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'

22 Men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus the Nazarean, a man from God, pointed out to you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as yourselves also know:

22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:

22 “Men of Israel, listen to these words: (W)Jesus the Nazarene, (X)a man (r)attested to you by God with (s)miracles and (Y)wonders and (t)signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know—

22 “Men of Israel, listen to these words: This Jesus the Nazarene was a man pointed out to you by God with miracles, wonders, and signs that God did among you through Him, just as you yourselves know.(P)

22 "Fellow Israelis, listen to these words: Jesus from Nazareth was a man authenticated to you by God through miracles, wonders, and signs that God performed through him among you, as you yourselves know.

23 him, by the destined counsel and foreknowledge of God delivered up, ye have seized, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

23 this Man, delivered over by the (Z)predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, (AA)you nailed to a cross by the hands of (u)godless men and put Him to death.

23 Though He was delivered up according to God’s determined plan and foreknowledge, you used(e) lawless people(f) to nail Him to a cross and kill Him.(Q)

23 After he was arrested according to the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified this very man and killed him using the hands of lawless men.

24 whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: forasmuch as it was not possible that he should be held thereby.

24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.

24 (v)But (AB)God raised Him up again, putting an end to the (w)agony of death, since it (AC)was impossible for Him to be held (x)in its power.

24 God raised Him up, ending the pains of death,(R) because it was not possible for Him to be held by it.

24 But God raised him up and put an end to suffering of death, since it was impossible for him to be held by it,

25 For David speaketh concerning him, "I have seen the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand, that I might not be shaken:

25 For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:

25 For David says of Him,(AD)I saw the Lord always in my presence; For He is at my right hand, so that I will not be shaken.

25 For David says of Him:I saw the Lord ever before me;because He is at my right hand,I will not be shaken.

25 since David says about him, "I always keep my eyes on the Lord, for he is at my right hand so that I cannot be shaken.

26 therefore is my heart full of joy, and my tongue hath exulted; and still shall my flesh also repose in hope,

26 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:

26 Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue exulted;Moreover my flesh also will live in hope;

26 Therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced. Moreover, my flesh will rest in hope,

26 That is why my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices, yes, even my body still rests securely in hope.

27 that thou wilt not leave my soul in the mansion of the dead, nor permit that Holy One of thine to see corruption.

27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

27 Because You will not abandon my soul to (AE)Hades,(AF)Nor (y)allow Your (z)Holy One to (aa)undergo decay.

27 because You will not leave me in Hadesor allow Your Holy One to see decay.(S)

27 For you will not abandon my soul to Hades or allow your Holy One to experience decay.

28 Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt fill me with delight by thy countenance."

28 Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.

28 You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of gladness with Your presence.’

28 You have revealed the paths of life to me;You will fill me with gladnessin Your presence.(T)(g)

28 You have made the ways of life known to me, and you will fill me with gladness in your presence.'

29 Men and brethren, permit me to speak with freedom to you concerning the patriarch David, that he hath been both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us to this day.

29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.

29 (ab)Brethren, I may confidently say to you regarding the (AG)patriarch David that he both (AH)died and (AI)was buried, and (AJ)his tomb is (ac)with us to this day.

29 “Brothers, I can confidently speak to you about the patriarch David: He is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.(U)

29 "Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and that his tomb is among us to this day.

30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn to him with an oath, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up the Messiah to sit upon his throne;

30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;

30 And so, because he was (AK)a prophet and knew that (AL)God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one (ad)of his descendants on his throne,

30 Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn an oath to him to seat one of his descendants(h)(i) on his throne.(V)

30 Therefore, since he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him with an oath to put one of his descendants on his throne,

31 he, foreseeing this, spake of the resurrection of the Messiah, that his soul should not be left in the mansion of the dead, and that his flesh should not see corruption.

31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

31 he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of (ae)the Christ, that (AM)He was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did His flesh (af)suffer decay.

31 Seeing this in advance, he spoke concerning the resurrection of the Messiah:He(j) was not left in Hades, and His flesh did not experience decay.(W)(k)

31 he looked ahead and spoke about the resurrection of the Messiah: "He was not abandoned to Hades, and his flesh did not experience decay.'

32 This very Jesus hath God raised up, of which we all are witnesses.

32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.

32 This Jesus (AN)God raised up again, to which we are all (AO)witnesses.

32 “God has resurrected(X) this Jesus. We are all witnesses of this.

32 "It was this very Jesus whom God raised and we're all witnesses of that.

33 He therefore being exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, hath poured out this, which ye now see and hear.

33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.

33 Therefore having been exalted (ag)(AP)to the right hand of God, and (AQ)having received from the Father (AR)the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has (AS)poured forth this which you both see and hear.

33 Therefore, since He has been exalted to the right hand of God(Y) and has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit,(Z) He has poured out(AA) what you both see and hear.

33 He has been exalted to the right hand of God, has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit, and has caused you to experience what you are seeing and hearing.

34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: for he saith himself, "The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit on my right hand,

34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

34 For it was not David who ascended into (ah)heaven, but he himself says:(AT)The Lord said to my Lord,Sit at My right hand,

34 For it was not David who ascended into the heavens, but he himself says:The Lord declared to my Lord,‘Sit at My right hand

34 After all, David did not go up to heaven, but he said, "The Lord told my Lord, "Sit at my right hand,

35 until I make thine enemies a footstool for thy feet."

35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool.

35 Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”’

35 until I make Your enemies Your footstool.’(AB)(l)

35 until I make your enemies your footstool."'

36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know assuredly, that God hath made him Lord and Messiah, even that very Jesus whom ye crucified.

36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

36 Therefore let all the (AU)house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both (AV)Lord and (ai)Christ—this Jesus (AW)whom you crucified.”

36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah!”(AC)

36 "Therefore, let all the people of Israel understand beyond a doubt that God made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah!"

The Response To Peter's Sermon

37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said unto Peter and the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

37 Now when they heard this, they were (aj)pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “(ak)Brethren, (al)(AX)what shall we do?”

37 When they heard this, they came under deep conviction(m) and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles: “Brothers, what must we do?”(AD)

37 When the crowd that had gathered heard this, they were pierced to the heart. They asked Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what should we do?"

38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptised every one of you into the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

38 Peter said to them, “(AY)Repent, and each of you be (AZ)baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

38 “Repent,”(AE) Peter said to them, “and be baptized,(AF) each of you, in the name(AG) of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

38 Peter answered them, "Every one of you must repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus the Messiah for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the Holy Spirit as a gift.

39 For the promise is to you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off; even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

39 For (BA)the promise is for you and your children and for all who are (BB)far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.”

39 For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off,(n)(AH) as many as the Lord our God will call.”

39 For this promise belongs to you and your children, as well as to all those who are distant, whom the Lord our God may call to himself."

40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted, saying, Be saved from this untoward generation.

40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.

40 And with many other words he solemnly (BC)testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, “(am)Be saved from this (BD)perverse generation!”

40 And with many other words he testified and strongly urged them, saying, “Be saved from this corrupt(o) generation!”(AI)

40 Using many different expressions, Peter continued to testify and to plead: "Be saved," he urged them, "from this corrupt generation!"

A Generous And Growing Church

41 They therefore who gladly received his discourse were baptised: and there were added to them that day about three thousand souls.

41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand (an)(BE)souls.

41 So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about 3,000 people were added to them.

41 So those who welcomed his message were baptized. That day about 3,000 people were added to their number.

The Fellowship Of The First Believers

42 And they persevered stedfastly in the doctrine of the apostles, and in communion, and in breaking bread, and in prayers.

42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

42 They were (BF)continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to (BG)the breaking of bread and (ao)(BH)to prayer.

42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching,(AJ) to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to the prayers.(AK)

42 The believers continued to devote themselves to what the apostles were teaching, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to times of prayer.

Life Among The Believers

43 And on every soul there was an awe: and many miracles and signs were done by the apostles.

45 and they (BK)began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need.

45 They sold their possessions and property and distributed the proceeds to all, as anyone had a need.(p)

45 They made it their practice to sell their possessions and goods and to distribute the proceeds to anyone who was in need.

46 And daily continuing with one mind at the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they partook of their food with great joy and simplicity of heart,

46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

46 (BL)Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and (BM)breaking bread (as)from house to house, they were taking their (at)meals together with gladness and (au)sincerity of heart,

46 Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple complex, and broke bread from house to house. They ate their food with a joyful and humble attitude,(AN)

46 United in purpose, they went to the Temple every day, ate at each other's homes, and shared their food with glad and humble hearts.
