but Paul replied, they have publickly scourg'd us, who are Romans, without any trial, they have thrown us into jayl, and now do they give us a private discharge? no, let them come themselves and release us.

as they were tying him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion, does the law allow to scourge a Roman citizen, and without any trial?

but finding he had done nothing that deserv'd death, I have resolved to send him to the emperor, to whom he had appealed.

but I found their accusation turned upon certain topics of their law, and contain'd nothing that was capital, or that deserv'd imprisonment:

they declar'd to one another, "this man has done nothing that deserves either death or imprisonment:"

who, after my examination, would have discharg'd me, as having done nothing that was capital.

for he was sensible that they had delivered him up out of meer envy.

renouncing all secret dishonesty, and void of all artifice, I deliver the word of God unadulterated, and recommend my self by urging the truth home to every man's conscience, as in the presence of God.
