Beware of men: for they shall deliver you up to the councils, and shall scourge you in their synagogues;

But take ye heed to yourselves. For they shall bring you up to the councils, and into the synagogues, and ye shall be beaten, and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings, for my sake, for a testimonial unto them.

They dare say to the Prophets, "See not," and unto them that be clear of judgment, "Tell us of nothing for to come, but speak friendly words unto us, and preach us false things.

'But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink! Yea, ye commanded the prophets, saying, 'Prophesy not.'

"Tush, hold your tongue," say they. "It shall not fall on this people, we shall not come so to confusion,"

"Wherefore, Behold, I send unto you prophets, wise men, and scribes. And of them: some shall ye kill and crucify, and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city;

And when the time was come, he sent a servant to his tenants, that they should give him of the fruits of the vineyard. And the tenants did beat him: and sent him away empty.

Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him.

But that it be noised no farther among the people, let us threaten and charge them that they speak henceforth to no man in this name."

saying, "Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? And behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and ye intend to bring this man's blood upon us."

in death often. Of the Jews, five times received I, every time, forty stripes, save one.
