Then the king gave orders, and Daniel was brought in and cast into the lions’ den. The king spoke and said to Daniel, “

Your God whom you constantly serve will Himself deliver you.”

Many are the afflictions of the righteous,

But the Lord

delivers him out of them all.

You brought us into the net;
You laid an oppressive burden upon our loins.

Let Israel now say,

Then they took Jeremiah and cast him into the cistern of Malchijah the king’s son, which was in the court of the guardhouse; and they let Jeremiah down with ropes. Now in the cistern there was no water but only mud, and Jeremiah sank into the mud.

My enemies without cause
Hunted me down like a bird;

For we do not want you to be unaware, brethren, of our affliction which came to us in

Asia, that we were burdened excessively, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of life;

For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison,

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you;
