Ezekiel Prophesies Against Tyre

1 Now in the eleventh year, on the first [day] of the month [after the capture of King Jehoiachin], the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

1 Now in the eleventh year, on the first of the month, the word of the Lord came to me saying,

1 And it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the first day of the month, that the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

1 In the eleventh year, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me:

1 During the eleventh year, on the first day of the month of our captivity, this message came to me from the LORD:

2 “Son of man, because (a)Tyre has said against Jerusalem, ‘Aha! The gateway of the people is broken; she is open to me. I will be filled, now that she is a desolate waste,’

2 “Son of man, because (A)Tyre has said concerning Jerusalem, ‘Aha, the (B)gateway of the peoples is broken; it has (a)(C)opened to me. I shall be filled, now that she is laid waste,’

2 Son of man, because that Tyrus hath said against Jerusalem, Aha, she is broken that was the gates of the people: she is turned unto me: I shall be replenished, now she is laid waste:

2 “Son of man, because Tyre(A) said about Jerusalem, ‘Good!(B) The gateway to the peoples is shattered. She has been turned over to me. I will be filled now that she lies in ruins,’

2 "Son of Man, because Tyre has been saying about Jerusalem, "The international gateway is broken down! It's wide open to me! I will be replenished, now that it lies in ruins!'

3 therefore, thus says the Lord God, ‘Behold, I am against you, O Tyre, and I will cause many nations to come up against you, as the sea makes its waves crest.

3 therefore thus says the Lord (b)God, ‘Behold, I am against you, O Tyre, and I will bring up (D)many nations against you, as the (E)sea brings up its waves.

3 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Tyrus, and will cause many nations to come up against thee, as the sea causeth his waves to come up.

3 therefore this is what the Lord God says: See, I am against you, Tyre!(C) I will raise up many nations against you, just as the sea raises its waves.

3 "Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: "Watch out! I'm coming to get you, Tyre! I'm about to bring many nations to attack you. They'll come in wave after wave, like the advancing tide,

4 They will destroy the walls of Tyre and break down her towers; and I will scrape her dust and debris from her and make her as bare as [the top of] a rock.

4 They will (F)destroy the walls of Tyre and break down her towers; and I will scrape her debris from her and make her a bare rock.

4 And they shall destroy the walls of Tyrus, and break down her towers: I will also scrape her dust from her, and make her like the top of a rock.

4 They will destroy the walls of Tyre and demolish her towers. I will scrape the soil from her and turn her into a bare rock.

4 and will destroy the city walls of Tyre. After they break down her fortified towers, I'll scrape away the city's debris, right down to the bare bedrock,

5 Her island in the midst of the sea will become a dry place to spread nets, for I have spoken,’ says the Lord God, ‘and she will become a prey and a spoil for the nations.

5 She will be a place for the spreading of nets in the midst of the sea, for I have spoken,’ declares the Lord God, ‘and she will become (G)spoil for the nations.

5 It shall be a place for the spreading of nets in the midst of the sea: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD: and it shall become a spoil to the nations.

5 She will become a place in the sea to spread nets, for I have spoken.” This is the declaration of the Lord God. “She will become plunder for the nations,(D)

5 and it will become a place where nets will be spread out right in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. Because I have declared this to happen,' declares the Lord GOD, "Tyre will be treated as the spoils of war by the invading nations.

6 Also Tyre’s daughters (towns, villages) (b)on the mainland will be killed by the sword, and they will know [without any doubt] that I am the Lord.’”

6 Also her (H)daughters who are (c)on the mainland will be slain by the sword, and they will know that I am the Lord.’”

6 And her daughters which are in the field shall be slain by the sword; and they shall know that I am the LORD.

6 and her villages on the mainland will be slaughtered by the sword.(E) Then they will know that I am Yahweh.”

6 Furthermore, her citizens who live on the mainland will be executed with swords. That's how they'll learn that I am the LORD.'"

Nebuchadnezzar To Attack Tyre

7 For thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I will bring upon Tyre from the north (c)Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, king of kings, with horses and chariots and with horsemen and a great army.

7 For thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I will bring upon Tyre from the north Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, (I)king of kings, with horses, (J)chariots, cavalry and (d)a great army.

7 For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will bring upon Tyrus Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, a king of kings, from the north, with horses, and with chariots, and with horsemen, and companies, and much people.

7 For this is what the Lord God says: “See, I am about to bring King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, king of kings,(F) against Tyre from the north with horses, chariots, cavalry, and a vast company of troops.

7 "This is what the Lord GOD says: "Watch out! I'm about to bring from the north King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, that king of kings. He'll come with horses, chariots, cavalry, and a vast army.

8 He will kill your daughters on the mainland with the sword, and he shall make siege walls against you and build a siege ramp against you and raise [a roof of] large shields [as a defense] against you.

8 He will slay your daughters (e)on the mainland with the sword; and he will make (K)siege walls against you, cast up a (L)ramp against you and raise up a large shield against you.

8 He shall slay with the sword thy daughters in the field: and he shall make a fort against thee, and cast a mount against thee, and lift up the buckler against thee.

8 He will slaughter your villages on the mainland with the sword. He will set up siege works against you,(G) and will build a ramp(a) and raise a wall of shields against you.

8 He'll execute your citizens who live on the mainland with swords. He'll build siege engines to attack you. Then he'll construct siege ramps against you and build huge shields to protect themselves against you.

9 He will direct the [shocking] blow of his battering rams against your walls, and he will tear down your towers with his crowbars.

9 The blow of his battering rams he will direct against your walls, and with his (f)axes he will break down your towers.

9 And he shall set engines of war against thy walls, and with his axes he shall break down thy towers.

9 He will direct the blows of his battering rams against your walls and tear down your towers with his iron tools.

9 ""He'll direct the blows of his battering rams against your walls and will breach your fortified towers with axes.

10 Because of the great number of his horses, their dust will cover you; your walls [O Tyre] will shake from the noise of the horsemen and the wagons and the chariots when he enters your gates as men enter a city that is breached.

10 Because of the multitude of his (M)horses, the dust raised by them will cover you; your walls will (N)shake at the noise of cavalry and (g)wagons and chariots when he (O)enters your gates as men enter a city that is breached.

10 By reason of the abundance of his horses their dust shall cover thee: thy walls shall shake at the noise of the horsemen, and of the wheels, and of the chariots, when he shall enter into thy gates, as men enter into a city wherein is made a breach.

10 His horses will be so numerous that their dust will cover you. When he enters your gates as an army entering a breached city, your walls will shake from the noise of cavalry, wagons, and chariots.

10 There will be so many horses that the dust raised by them will cover you completely. The walls of your city will tremble from the noise of Nebuchadnezzar's cavalry, wagons, and chariots when they enter through the gates of your city, as men enter a city that has been breached.

11 With the hoofs of his horses Nebuchadnezzar will trample all your streets; with the sword he will kill your people, and your strong pillars (obelisks) will fall to the ground.

11 With the hoofs of his (P)horses he will trample all your streets. He will slay your people with the sword; and your strong pillars will (Q)come down to the ground.

11 With the hoofs of his horses shall he tread down all thy streets: he shall slay thy people by the sword, and thy strong garrisons shall go down to the ground.

11 He will trample all your streets with the hooves of his horses.(H) He will slaughter your people with the sword, and your mighty pillars will fall to the ground.

11 ""Their horses will trample all the public places as he executes your inhabitants with swords. The most fortified of your pillars will be torn to the ground.

12 Also they will take your riches as spoil and plunder your merchandise, and tear down your walls and your pleasant houses, and throw your stones and your timber and the debris [from your city] out in the water.

12 Also they will make a spoil of your riches and a prey of your (R)merchandise, (S)break down your walls and destroy your (T)pleasant houses, and (h)throw your stones and your timbers and your debris (U)into the water.

12 And they shall make a spoil of thy riches, and make a prey of thy merchandise: and they shall break down thy walls, and destroy thy pleasant houses: and they shall lay thy stones and thy timber and thy dust in the midst of the water.

12 They will take your wealth as spoil and plunder your merchandise.(I) They will also demolish your walls and tear down your beautiful homes. Then they will throw your stones, timber, and soil into the water.

12 They will plunder your riches and loot your businesses. They'll tear down your walls and demolish your luxurious homes. They'll grab the stones, wood, and rubble from the destruction and dump it all into the Mediterranean Sea.

13 So I will silence your songs, and the sound of your lyres will no longer be heard.

13 So I will (i)silence the sound of your (V)songs, and the sound of your (W)harps will be heard no more.

13 And I will cause the noise of thy songs to cease; and the sound of thy harps shall be no more heard.

13 I will put an end to the noise of your songs,(J) and the sound of your lyres will no longer be heard.

13 ""I'll silence the noise of your songs and the music of your harps won't be heard anymore.

14 I will make you [Tyre] a (d)bare rock; you will be a dry place on which to spread nets. You will never be rebuilt, for I the Lord have spoken,” says the Lord God.

14 I will make you a bare rock; you will be a place for the spreading of nets. You will be (X)built no more, for I the (Y)Lord have spoken,” declares the Lord God.

14 And I will make thee like the top of a rock: thou shalt be a place to spread nets upon; thou shalt be built no more: for I the LORD have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.

14 I will turn you into a bare rock, and you will be a place to spread nets. You will never be rebuilt, for I, Yahweh, have spoken.”(K) This is the declaration of the Lord God.

14 I'll turn you into bare rock, and your city will become a place to spread nets. You will never be built again, because I the LORD have decreed this,' declares the Lord GOD."

The Effect Of Tyre's Destruction

15 Thus says the Lord God to Tyre, “Shall not the coastlands shake at the sound of your fall when the wounded groan, when the slaughter occurs in your midst?

15 Thus says the Lord God to Tyre, “Shall not the (Z)coastlands (AA)shake at the sound of your fall when the wounded groan, when the slaughter occurs in your midst?

15 Thus saith the Lord GOD to Tyrus; Shall not the isles shake at the sound of thy fall, when the wounded cry, when the slaughter is made in the midst of thee?

15 This is what the Lord God says to Tyre: “Won’t the coasts and islands quake at the sound of your downfall,(L) when the wounded groan and slaughter occurs within you?

15 "This is what the Lord GOD says to Tyre: "When your wounded citizens groan while the slaughter takes place among you, the people who live in the coastlands will tremble in terror as they hear about your fall, will they not?

16 Then all the princes of the sea will go down from their thrones and remove their robes and take off their embroidered garments. They will clothe themselves with trembling; they will sit on the ground, tremble again and again, and be appalled at you.

16 Then all the princes of the sea will (AB)go down from their thrones, remove their robes and strip off their embroidered garments. They will (AC)clothe themselves with (j)trembling; they will sit on the ground, (AD)tremble every moment and be appalled at you.

16 Then all the princes of the sea shall come down from their thrones, and lay away their robes, and put off their broidered garments: they shall clothe themselves with trembling; they shall sit upon the ground, and shall tremble at every moment, and be astonished at thee.

16 All the princes of the sea will descend from their thrones,(M) remove their robes, and strip off their embroidered garments. They will clothe themselves with trembling; they will sit on the ground, tremble continually, and be appalled(N) at you.

16 That's when all the kings of the seafaring nations will abandon their thrones, strip off their fancy clothes, and collapse trembling on the ground. They'll be so frightened as they observe what has happened to you that they'll be unable to stop trembling. They will be utterly appalled at you!

17 They will take up a dirge (funeral poem to be sung) for you and say to you,‘How you have perished and vanished, O renowned city,From the seas, O renowned city,Which was mighty on the sea,She and her inhabitants,Who imposed her terrorOn all who lived there!

17 They will take up a (AE)lamentation over you and say to you,(AF)How you have perished, O inhabited one,From the seas, O renowned city,Which was (AG)mighty on the sea,She and her inhabitants,Who (k)imposed (l)her terrorOn all her inhabitants!

17 And they shall take up a lamentation for thee, and say to thee, How art thou destroyed, that wast inhabited of seafaring men, the renowned city, which wast strong in the sea, she and her inhabitants, which cause their terror to be on all that haunt it!

17 Then they will lament(O) for you and say of you:How you have perished, city of renown, you who were populated from the seas!(b)She who was powerful on the sea,she and all of her inhabitantsinflicted their terror.(c)

17 They'll sing this mourning song for you: "How lost you are, you inhabited city, that was built in the middle of the sea! How famous you were! How strong on the sea! She and her inhabitants inflicted terror to everyone who lived within her."

18 ‘Now the coastlands will trembleOn the day of your fall;Yes, the coastlands which are by the seaWill be terrified at your departure.’”

18 ‘Now the (AH)coastlands will trembleOn the day of your fall;Yes, the coastlands which are by the seaWill be terrified at your (AI)passing.’”

18 Now shall the isles tremble in the day of thy fall; yea, the isles that are in the sea shall be troubled at thy departure.

18 Now the coastlands tremble(P)on the day of your downfall;the islands in the seaare alarmed by your demise.”

18 "Now the coastland inhabitants will tremble on the day that you fall. The coastland inhabitants, who make their living from the sea, will be terrified when you pass away!'

19 For thus says the Lord God, “When I make you a desolate city, like the cities which are not inhabited, when I bring up the deep over you and great waters cover you,

19 For thus says the Lord God, “When I make you a desolate city, like the cities which are not inhabited, when I (AJ)bring up the deep over you and the great waters cover you,

19 For thus saith the Lord GOD; When I shall make thee a desolate city, like the cities that are not inhabited; when I shall bring up the deep upon thee, and great waters shall cover thee;

19 For this is what the Lord God says: “When I make you a ruined city like other deserted cities, when I raise up the deep against you so that the mighty waters cover you,

19 "This is what the Lord GOD says: "When I turn your city into a ghost town, when I flood you with deep water that covers you completely,

20 then I will bring you down with those who descend into the pit (the place of the dead), to the people of old, and I will make you [Tyre] live in the depths of the earth, like the ancient ruins, with those who go down to the pit, so that you will not be inhabited; but I will set glory and splendor in the land of the living.

20 then I will bring you down with those who (AK)go down to the pit, to the people of old, and I will make you dwell in the (AL)lower parts of the earth, like the ancient waste places, with those who go down to the pit, so that you will not (m)be inhabited; but I will set (AM)glory in the land of the living.

20 When I shall bring thee down with them that descend into the pit, with the people of old time, and shall set thee in the low parts of the earth, in places desolate of old, with them that go down to the pit, that thou be not inhabited; and I shall set glory in the land of the living;

20 then I will bring you down to be with those who descend to the Pit,(Q) to the people of antiquity. I will make you dwell in the underworld(d) like(e) the ancient ruins, with those who descend to the Pit, so that you will no longer be inhabited or display your splendor(f) in the land of the living.(R)

20 I'll make sure that you go straight to the Pit, into the lowest part of the earth, where you'll be with people who lived in ancient times. You'll keep company there with the dead, who have gone into the Pit. As a result, your city won't be inhabited. Meanwhile, I will display my glory in the land of the living.

21 I will bring terrors on you and you will be no more. Though you will be sought, yet you will never be found again,” says the Lord God.

21 I will (n)bring (AN)terrors on you and you will be no more; though you will be sought, (AO)you will never be found again,” declares the Lord God.

21 I will make thee a terror, and thou shalt be no more: though thou be sought for, yet shalt thou never be found again, saith the Lord GOD.

21 I will make you an object of horror, and you will no longer exist.(S) You will be sought but will never be found again.” This is the declaration of the Lord God.

21 I'm going to send terrifying calamity in your direction, and you won't exist any longer. You might be sought after, but you'll never be found again,' declares the Lord GOD."
