Ezekiel Dramatizes Jerusalem's Fall
1 "As for you, son of man, take a sharp sword and use it as a barber's razor. Shave off some of the hair from your head and your beard. Then take scales and divide up the hair you cut off.
1 And thou, son of man, take thee a sharp knife, take thee a barber's rasor, and cause it to pass upon thine head and upon thy beard: then take thee balances to weigh, and divide the hair.
1 “As for you, son of man, take a (A)sharp sword; take and (a)use it as a barber’s razor on your head and beard. Then take (B)scales for weighing and divide (b)the hair.
1 “Now you, son of man, take a sharp sword,(A) use it as you would a barber’s razor, and shave your head and beard. Then take a set of scales and divide the hair.
1 "Now as for you, Son of Man, you are to go find a sharp sword and use it like a barber's razor. You are to cut your hair and beard. Then you are to take a weighing scale and divide your shaved hair into three parts.
2 Burn a third of it in the fire inside the city when the days of your siege are completed. Take a third and slash it with a sword all around the city. Scatter a third to the wind, and I will unleash a sword behind them.
2 Thou shalt burn with fire a third part in the midst of the city, when the days of the siege are fulfilled: and thou shalt take a third part, and smite about it with a knife: and a third part thou shalt scatter in the wind; and I will draw out a sword after them.
2 One third you shall burn in the fire at the center of the city, when the (C)days of the siege are completed. Then you shall take one third and strike it with the sword all around (c)the city, and one third you shall scatter to the wind; and I will (D)unsheathe a sword behind them.
2 You are to burn up a third of it in the city when the days of the siege have ended;(B) you are to take a third and slash it with the sword all around the city; and you are to scatter a third to the wind, for I will draw a sword to chase after them.
2 You are to burn a third of it in the middle of the city when you've finished your siege. Next, you are to take another third of it and beat it with your sword. Last, you are to scatter the remaining third to the wind, after which I'll unsheathe my sword and pursue them.
4 Again, take more of them and throw them into the fire, and burn them up. From there a fire will spread to all the house of Israel.
4 Then take of them again, and cast them into the midst of the fire, and burn them in the fire; for thereof shall a fire come forth into all the house of Israel.
4 Take again some of them and throw them into the fire and burn them in the fire; from it a fire will (e)spread to all the house of Israel.
4 Take some more of them, throw them into the fire, and burn them in it.(D) A fire will spread from it to the whole house of Israel.
4 Then you are to take a few strands, throw them in the fire, and incinerate them. A fire will proceed to the house of Israel from there."
5 "This is what the sovereign Lord says: This is Jerusalem; I placed her in the center of the nations with countries all around her.
5 Thus saith the Lord GOD; This is Jerusalem: I have set it in the midst of the nations and countries that are round about her.
5 “Thus says the Lord (f)God, ‘This is (E)Jerusalem; I have set her at the (F)center of the nations, with lands around her.
5 “This is what the Lord God says: I have set this Jerusalem in the center of the nations, with countries all around her.
5 "This is what the Lord GOD says, "This is Jerusalem. I placed her in the center of nations, with many nations surrounding her.
6 Then she defied my regulations and my statutes, becoming more wicked than the nations and the countries around her. Indeed, they have rejected my regulations, and they do not follow my statutes.
6 And she hath changed my judgments into wickedness more than the nations, and my statutes more than the countries that are round about her: for they have refused my judgments and my statutes, they have not walked in them.
6 But she has rebelled against My ordinances more wickedly than the nations and against My statutes (G)more than the lands which surround her; for they have (H)rejected My ordinances and have not walked (g)in My statutes.’
6 But she has rebelled against My ordinances with more wickedness than the nations, and against My statutes more than the countries that surround her. For her people have rejected My ordinances and have not walked in My statutes.
6 But she rebelled against my ordinances and my statutes. She practiced more evil than all the nations and territories around her. They rejected my ordinances and didn't live by my statutes.'
7 "Therefore this is what the sovereign Lord says: Because you are more arrogant than the nations around you, you have not followed my statutes and have not carried out my regulations. You have not even carried out the regulations of the nations around you!
7 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because ye multiplied more than the nations that are round about you, and have not walked in my statutes, neither have kept my judgments, neither have done according to the judgments of the nations that are round about you;
7 Therefore, thus says the Lord God, ‘Because you have (I)more turmoil than the nations which surround you and have not walked in My statutes, nor observed My ordinances, nor observed the ordinances of the nations which surround you,’
7 “Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: Because you have been more insubordinate than the nations around you(E)—you have not walked in My statutes or kept My ordinances; you have not even kept the ordinances of the nations around you—
7 "Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: "Because you're more disrespectful than the nations that surround you, you didn't follow my statutes or follow my ordinances. You didn't even follow the ordinances of the surrounding nations!'
8 "Therefore this is what the sovereign Lord says: I -- even I -- am against you, and I will execute judgment among you while the nations watch.
8 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I, even I, am against thee, and will execute judgments in the midst of thee in the sight of the nations.
8 therefore, thus says the Lord God, ‘Behold, I, even I, am (J)against you, and I will (K)execute judgments among you in the sight of the nations.
8 therefore, this is what the Lord God says: See, I am against you, Jerusalem, and I will execute judgments within you in the sight of the nations.
8 "Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: "Watch out! I that's right, even I am against you. I'll carry out my sentence among you right in front of the nations.
9 I will do to you what I have never done before and will never do again because of all your abominable practices.
9 And I will do in thee that which I have not done, and whereunto I will not do any more the like, because of all thine abominations.
9 And because of all your abominations, I will do among you what I have (L)not done, and the like of which I will never do again.
9 Because of all your detestable practices, I will do to you what I have never done before and what I will never do again.(F)
9 In fact, I'm going to do what I've never done before and what I'll never again do, because of all of your loathsome behavior:
10 Therefore fathers will eat their sons within you, Jerusalem, and sons will eat their fathers. I will execute judgments on you, and I will scatter any survivors to the winds.
10 Therefore the fathers shall eat the sons in the midst of thee, and the sons shall eat their fathers; and I will execute judgments in thee, and the whole remnant of thee will I scatter into all the winds.
10 Therefore, (M)fathers will eat their sons among you, and sons will eat their fathers; for I will execute judgments on you and (N)scatter all your remnant to every wind.
10 As a result, fathers will eat their sons(G) within Jerusalem,(a) and sons will eat their fathers. I will execute judgments against you and scatter all your survivors to every direction of the wind.
10 Fathers will eat their children in your midst. After this, your sons will eat their fathers as I carry out my sentence against you and scatter your survivors to the winds!'
11 "Therefore, as surely as I live, says the sovereign Lord, because you defiled my sanctuary with all your detestable idols and with all your abominable practices, I will withdraw; my eye will not pity you, nor will I spare you.
11 Wherefore, as I live, saith the Lord GOD; Surely, because thou hast defiled my sanctuary with all thy detestable things, and with all thine abominations, therefore will I also diminish thee; neither shall mine eye spare, neither will I have any pity.
11 So as I live,’ declares the Lord God, ‘surely, because you have (O)defiled My sanctuary with all your (P)detestable idols and with all your abominations, therefore I will also withdraw, and My eye will have no pity and I will not spare.
11 “Therefore, as I live”—this is the declaration of the Lord God—“I am going to cut you off and show you no pity, because you have defiled My sanctuary(H) with all your detestable practices and abominations.(I) Yes, I will not spare you.
11 "Therefore, as sure as I live," declares the Lord GOD, "because you've defiled my sanctuary with every loathsome thing and every abomination, I'll restrain myself, and I'll show neither pity nor compassion.
12 A third of your people will die of plague or be overcome by the famine within you. A third of your people will fall by the sword surrounding you, and a third I will scatter to the winds. I will unleash a sword behind them.
12 A third part of thee shall die with the pestilence, and with famine shall they be consumed in the midst of thee: and a third part shall fall by the sword round about thee; and I will scatter a third part into all the winds, and I will draw out a sword after them.
12 One third of you will die by (Q)plague or be consumed by famine among you, one third will fall by the sword around you, and one third I will (R)scatter to every wind, and I will (S)unsheathe a sword behind them.
12 A third of your people will die by plague and be consumed by famine within you;(J) a third will fall by the sword all around you; and I will scatter a third to every direction of the wind, and I will draw a sword to chase after them.(K)
12 A third of you will die by pestilence, starving because of the famine in your midst. Another third will die violently by the violence of war around you. The final third I'll scatter to the wind as I unsheathe my sword to pursue them.
13 Then my anger will be fully vented; I will exhaust my rage on them, and I will be appeased. Then they will know that I, the Lord, have spoken in my jealousy when I have fully vented my rage against them.
13 Thus shall mine anger be accomplished, and I will cause my fury to rest upon them, and I will be comforted: and they shall know that I the LORD have spoken it in my zeal, when I have accomplished my fury in them.
13 ‘Thus My anger will be spent and I will (h)satisfy My wrath on them, and I will be (i)(T)appeased; then they will know that I, the Lord, have (U)spoken in My zeal when I have spent My wrath upon them.
13 When My anger is spent and I have vented My wrath on them, I will be appeased.(L) Then after I have spent My wrath on them, they will know that I, Yahweh, have spoken in My jealousy.(M)
13 "Only then will I stop being angry my burning in anger. Then they'll know that I've spoken out in my arduous anger. Only then will my burning anger against them be exhausted.
14 "I will make you desolate and an object of scorn among the nations around you, in the sight of everyone who passes by.
14 Moreover I will make thee waste, and a reproach among the nations that are round about thee, in the sight of all that pass by.
14 Moreover, I will make you a desolation and a (V)reproach among the nations which surround you, in the sight of all who pass by.
14 “I will make you a ruin and a disgrace among the nations around you, in the sight of everyone who passes by.
14 I'm also going to turn you into a waste and an object of insult among the nations that surround you and in front of every person who passes by.
15 You will be an object of scorn and taunting, a prime example of destruction among the nations around you when I execute judgments against you in anger and raging fury. I, the Lord, have spoken!
15 So it shall be a reproach and a taunt, an instruction and an astonishment unto the nations that are round about thee, when I shall execute judgments in thee in anger and in fury and in furious rebukes. I the LORD have spoken it.
15 So (j)it will be a reproach, a reviling, a (W)warning and an object of horror to the nations who surround you when I (X)execute judgments against you in anger, wrath and raging rebukes. I, the Lord, have spoken.
15 So you(b) will be a disgrace and a taunt, a warning and a horror, to the nations around you when I execute judgments against you in anger,(N) wrath, and furious rebukes. I, Yahweh, have spoken.
15 As a result, Jerusalem will become an insult, an object of taunt, an example of chastisement, and a useless waste to all the nations that surround you when I carry out my sentence against you in my anger, my burning rage, and my burning rebukes. I, the LORD, have spoken it.
16 I will shoot against them deadly, destructive arrows of famine, which I will shoot to destroy you. I will prolong a famine on you and will remove the bread supply.
16 When I shall send upon them the evil arrows of famine, which shall be for their destruction, and which I will send to destroy you: and I will increase the famine upon you, and will break your staff of bread:
16 When I send against them the (k)deadly arrows of famine which (l)were for the destruction of those whom I will send to destroy you, then I will also intensify the famine upon you and break the staff of bread.
16 When I shoot deadly arrows of famine at them, arrows for destruction that I will send to destroy you, inhabitants of Jerusalem, I will intensify the famine against you and cut off your supply of bread.
16 I'll send arrows of severe famine in their direction, meant for destruction, which I'll shoot, intending to destroy them. I'll make you have more and more famines that will attack you, and I'll disrupt your source of food.
17 I will send famine and wild beasts against you and they will take your children from you. Plague and bloodshed will overwhelm you, and I will bring a sword against you. I, the Lord, have spoken!"
17 So will I send upon you famine and evil beasts, and they shall bereave thee; and pestilence and blood shall pass through thee; and I will bring the sword upon thee. I the LORD have spoken it.
17 Moreover, (Y)I will send on you famine and wild beasts, and they will bereave you of children; (Z)plague and bloodshed also will pass through you, and I will bring the sword on you. I, the Lord, have spoken.’”
17 I will send famine and dangerous animals against you. They will leave you childless, Jerusalem. Plague and bloodshed will sweep through you, and I will bring a sword against you. I, Yahweh, have spoken.”(O)
17 "I'll send famine and wild beasts against you that will rob you of your children. Pestilence and bloodshed will devastate you when I'll declare war on you. I, the LORD, have spoken."
