Paul's Ministry Recognized By The Jerusalem Apostles

1 Then after a period of fourteen years I again went up to Jerusalem, [this time] with Barnabas, taking Titus along also.

1 Then fourteen years later, I again went up to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus with me.

2 I went up [to Jerusalem] because of a [divine] revelation, and I put before them the gospel which I preach among the Gentiles. But I did so in private before those of (a)reputation, for fear that I might be running or had run [the course of my ministry] in vain.

2 And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain.

2 (a)It was because of a (D)revelation that I went up; and I submitted to them the (E)gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but I did so in private to those who were of reputation, for fear that I might be (F)running, or had run, in vain.

2 I went up according to a revelation(D) and presented to them the gospel I preach among the Gentiles—but privately to those recognized as leaders—so that I might not be running, or have run the race, in vain.

2 I went in response to a revelation, and in a private meeting with the reputed leaders, I explained to them the gospel that I'm proclaiming to the gentiles. I did this because I was afraid that I was running or had run my life's race for nothing.

3 But [all went well, for] not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled [as some had anticipated] to be circumcised, despite the fact that he was a Greek.

3 But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised:

4 My concern was because of the (b)false brothers [those people masquerading as Christians] who had been secretly smuggled in [to the community of believers]. They had slipped in to spy on the freedom which we have in Christ Jesus, in order to bring us back into bondage [under the Law of Moses].

4 And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage:

4 But it was because of the (I)false brethren secretly brought in, who (J)had sneaked in to spy out our (K)liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, in order to (L)bring us into bondage.

4 This issue arose because of false brothers(E) smuggled in, who came in secretly to spy on the freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, in order to enslave us.

4 However, false brothers were secretly brought in. They slipped in to spy on the freedom we have in the Messiah Jesus so that they might enslave us.

5 But we did not yield to them even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel would continue to remain with you [in its purity].

5 To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.

5 But we did not yield in subjection to them for even an hour, so that (M)the truth of the gospel would remain with you.

5 But we did not give up and submit to these people for even an hour, so that the truth(F) of the gospel would be preserved for you.

5 But we did not give in to them for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might always remain with you.

6 But from those who were of high reputation (whatever they were—in terms of individual importance—makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality—He is not impressed with the positions that people hold nor does He recognize distinctions such as fame or power)—well, those who were of reputation contributed nothing to me [that is, they had nothing to add to my gospel message nor did they impose any new requirements on me].(A)

6 But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man's person:) for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me:

6 But from those who (b)were of high (N)reputation (what they were makes no difference to me; (O)God (c)shows no partiality)—well, those who were of reputation contributed nothing to me.

6 Now from those recognized as important (what they really were makes no difference to me; God does not show favoritism(a)(G))—they added nothing to me.

6 Now those who were reputed to be important added nothing to my message. (What sort of people they were makes no difference to me, since God pays no attention to outward appearances.)

7 But on the contrary, they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised (Gentiles), just as Peter had been [entrusted to proclaim the gospel] to the circumcised (Jews);

7 But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter;

7 But on the contrary, seeing that I had been (P)entrusted with the (Q)gospel (d)to the uncircumcised, just as (R)Peter had been (e)to the circumcised

7 On the contrary, they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel for the uncircumcised,(H) just as Peter(I) was for the circumcised,

8 (for He who worked effectively for Peter and empowered him in his ministry to the Jews also worked effectively for me and empowered me in my ministry to the Gentiles).

8 (For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:)

8 (for He who effectually worked for Peter in his (S)apostleship (f)to the circumcised effectually worked for me also to the Gentiles),

8 since the One at work in Peter for an apostleship to the circumcised was also at work in me for the Gentiles.

8 For the one who worked through Peter by making him an apostle to the circumcised also worked through me by sending me to the gentiles.

9 And recognizing the grace [that God had] bestowed on me, James and Cephas (Peter) and John, who were reputed to be pillars [of the Jerusalem church], gave to me and Barnabas the (c)right hand of fellowship, so that we could go to the Gentiles [with their blessing] and they to the circumcised (Jews).

9 And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision.

9 and recognizing (T)the grace that had been given to me, (g)(U)James and (V)Cephas and John, who were (W)reputed to be (X)pillars, gave to me and (Y)Barnabas the (Z)right (h)hand of fellowship, so that we might (AA)go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.

9 When James,(J) Cephas,(K) and John,(L) recognized as pillars,(M) acknowledged the grace that had been given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to me and Barnabas, agreeing that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.

9 So when James, Cephas, and John (who were reputed to be leaders) recognized the grace that had been given me, they gave Barnabas and me the right hand of fellowship, agreeing that we should go to the gentiles and they to the circumcised.

10 They asked only [one thing], that we remember the poor, the very thing I was also eager to do.

10 Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.

10 They only asked us to remember the poor—(AB)the very thing I also was eager to do.

10 They asked only that we would remember the poor,(N) which I made every effort to do.

10 The only thing they asked us to do was to remember the destitute, the very thing I was eager to do.

Paul Confronts Peter At Antioch

11 Now when Cephas (Peter) came to Antioch, I opposed him face to face [about his conduct there], because he stood condemned [by his own actions].

11 But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed.

11 But when (AC)Cephas came to (AD)Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he (i)stood condemned.

11 But when Cephas(b) came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face because he stood condemned.(c)

12 Before certain men came from James, he used to eat [his meals] with the Gentiles; but when the men [from Jerusalem] arrived, he began to withdraw and separate himself [from the Gentile believers], because he was afraid of those from the (d)circumcision.

12 For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision.

12 For prior to the coming of certain men from (j)(AE)James, he used to (AF)eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he began to withdraw and hold himself aloof, (AG)fearing (k)the party of the circumcision.

12 For he regularly ate with the Gentiles before certain men came from James. However, when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, because he feared those from the circumcision party.

12 Until some men arrived from James, he was in the habit of eating with the gentiles, but after those men came, he withdrew from the gentiles and would not associate with them any longer, because he was afraid of the circumcision party.

13 The rest of the Jews joined him in this hypocrisy [ignoring their knowledge that Jewish and Gentile Christians were united, under the new covenant, into one faith], with the result that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy.

13 And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation.

13 The rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy, with the result that even (AH)Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy.

13 Then the rest of the Jews(O) joined his hypocrisy,(P) so that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy.

13 The other Jews also joined him in this hypocritical behavior, to the extent that even Barnabas was caught up in their hypocrisy.

14 But when I saw that they were not being straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I told Cephas (Peter) in front of everyone, “If you, being a Jew, live [as you have been living] like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how is it that you are [now virtually] forcing the Gentiles to live like Jews [if they want to eat with you]?”

14 But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?

14 But when I saw that they (AI)were not (l)straightforward about (AJ)the truth of the gospel, I said to (AK)Cephas in the presence of all, “If you, being a Jew, (AL)live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews? (m)

14 But when I saw that they were deviating from the truth of the gospel, I told Cephas(d) in front of everyone, “If you, who are a Jew, live like a Gentile(Q) and not like a Jew,(R) how can you compel Gentiles to live(S) like Jews?”(e)

14 But when I saw that they were not acting consistently with the truth of the gospel, I told Cephas in front of everyone, "Though you are a Jew, you have been living like a gentile and not like a Jew. So how can you insist that the gentiles must live like Jews?"

Justified By Faith In Christ

15 [I went on to say] “We are Jews by birth and not sinners from among the Gentiles;

15 We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles,

15 “We are (AM)Jews by nature and not (AN)sinners from among the Gentiles;

15 We who are Jews by birth and not “Gentile sinners”

15 We ourselves are Jews by birth, and not gentile sinners,

16 yet we know that a man is not (e)justified [and placed in right standing with God] by works of the Law, but [only] through faith in [God’s beloved Son,] Christ Jesus. And even we [as Jews] have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the Law. By observing the Law no one will ever be justified [declared free of the guilt of sin and its penalty].(B)

16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

16 nevertheless knowing that (AO)a man is not justified by the works of (n)the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by (AP)faith in Christ and not by the works of (o)the Law; since (AQ)by the works of (p)the Law no (q)flesh will be justified.

16 know that no one is justified by the works of the law(T) but by faith in Jesus Christ.(f) And we have believed in Christ Jesus so that we might be justified by faith in Christ(g) and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no human being will(h) be justified.

16 yet we know that a person is not justified by doing what the Law requires, but rather by the faithfulness of Jesus the Messiah. We, too, have believed in the Messiah Jesus so that we might be justified by the faithfulness of the Messiah and not by doing what the Law requires, for no human being will be justified by doing what the Law requires.

17 But if, while we seek to be justified in Christ [by faith], we ourselves are found to be sinners, does that make Christ an advocate or promoter of our sin? Certainly not!

17 But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid.

17 But if, while seeking to be justified in Christ, we ourselves have also been found (AR)sinners, is Christ then a minister of sin? (AS)May it never be!

17 But if we ourselves are also found to be “sinners” while seeking to be justified by Christ,(U) is Christ then a promoter(i)(V) of sin? Absolutely not!(W)

17 Now if we, while trying to be justified by the Messiah, have been found to be sinners, does that mean that the Messiah is serving the interests of sin? Of course not!

18 For if I [or anyone else should] rebuild [through word or by practice] what I once tore down [the belief that observing the Law is essential for salvation], I prove myself to be a transgressor.

18 For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.

18 For if I rebuild what I have once destroyed, I (AT)prove myself to be a transgressor.

18 If I rebuild(X) the system(j) I tore down, I show myself to be a lawbreaker.(Y)

18 For if I rebuild something that I tore down, I demonstrate that I am a wrongdoer.

19 For through the Law I died to the Law and its demands on me [because salvation is provided through the death and resurrection of Christ], so that I might [from now on] live to God.

19 For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.

19 For through (r)the Law I (AU)died to (s)the Law, so that I might live to God.

19 For through the law I have died to the law,(Z) so that I might live for God.(AA) I have been crucified with Christ(k)

19 For through the Law I died to the Law so that I might live for God. I have been crucified with the Messiah.

20 I have been crucified with Christ [that is, in Him I have shared His crucifixion]; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body I live by faith [by adhering to, relying on, and completely trusting] in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

20 I have been (AV)crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but (AW)Christ lives in me; and (t)the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in (AX)the Son of God, who (AY)loved me and (AZ)gave Himself up for me.

20 and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.(AB) The life I now live in the body,(l) I live by faith in the Son of God,(AC) who loved(AD) me(AE) and gave Himself(AF) for me.(AG)

20 I no longer live, but the Messiah lives in me, and the life that I am now living in this body I live by the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

21 I do not ignore or nullify the [gracious gift of the] grace of God [His amazing, unmerited favor], for if righteousness comes through [observing] the Law, then Christ died needlessly. [His suffering and death would have had no purpose whatsoever.]”

21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for (BA)if righteousness comes through (u)the Law, then Christ died needlessly.”

21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the law,(AH) then Christ died(AI) for nothing.

21 I do not misapply God's grace, for if righteousness comes about by doing what the Law requires, then the Messiah died for nothing.
