19 And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham begat Isaac:

19 These are the family records of Isaac son of Abraham. Abraham fathered Isaac.(M)

19 Now these are the records of the descendants of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham was the father of Isaac.

20 Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel, the Aramean from Paddan-aram and sister of Laban the Aramean.

20 and Isaac was forty years old when he took (T)Rebekah, the (U)daughter of Bethuel the (o)Aramean of Paddan-aram, the (V)sister of Laban the (p)Aramean, to be his wife.

20 And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padanaram, the sister to Laban the Syrian.

20 Isaac was 40 years old when he took as his wife Rebekah(N) daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan-aram(O) and sister of Laban the Aramean.(P)

20 Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean (Syrian) of Paddan-aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean.

21 Later, Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, since she was unable to conceive children, and the LORD responded to him his wife Rebekah became pregnant.

21 Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was barren; and (W)the Lord (q)answered him and Rebekah his wife (X)conceived.

21 And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.

21 Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife because she was childless.(Q) The Lord heard his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived.(R)

21 Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife, because she was unable to conceive children; and the Lord granted his prayer and Rebekah his wife conceived [twins].

22 But when the infants kept on wrestling each other inside her womb, she asked herself, "Why is this happening?" So she asked the LORD for an explanation.

22 But the children struggled together within her; and she said, “If it is so, why then am I this way?” So she went to (Y)inquire of the Lord.

22 And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to inquire of the LORD.

22 But the children inside her struggled with each other, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?”(i) So she went to inquire of the Lord.(S)

22 But the children struggled together within her [kicking and shoving one another]; and she said, “If it is so [that the Lord has heard our prayer], why then am I this way?” So she went to inquire of the Lord [praying for an answer].

23 "Two nations are in your womb," the LORD responded, "and two separate people will emerge. One people will be the stronger, and the older one will serve the younger."

23 The Lord said to her,(Z)Two nations are in your womb;(AA)And two peoples will be separated from your body; And one people shall be stronger than the other; And (AB)the older shall serve the younger.”

23 And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.

23 And the Lord said to her:Two nations are in your womb;two people will come from you and be separated. One people will be stronger than the other,(T)and the older will serve the younger.(U)

23 The Lord said to her,“[The founders of] two nations are in your womb; And the separation of two nations has begun in your body; The one people shall be stronger than the other; And the older shall serve the younger.”

24 Sure enough, when her due date arrived, she delivered twin sons.

24 When her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.

24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.

24 When her time came to give birth, there were indeed twins in her womb.

24 When her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.

25 The first son came out reddish his entire body was covered with hair so they named him Esau.

25 Now the first came forth red, (AC)all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau.

25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.

25 The first one came out red-looking,(j) covered with hair(k) like a fur coat, and they named him Esau.(V)

25 The first came out reddish all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau (hairy).

26 After that, his brother came out with his hand clutching Esau's heel, so they named him Jacob. Isaac was 60 years old when they were born.

26 Afterward his brother came forth with (AD)his hand holding on to Esau’s heel, so (AE)his name was called (r)Jacob; and Isaac was (AF)sixty years old when she gave birth to them.

26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.

26 After this, his brother came out grasping Esau’s heel with his hand.(W) So he was named Jacob.(l)(X) Isaac was 60 years old when they were born.

26 Afterward his brother came out, and his hand grasped Esau’s heel, so he was named Jacob ((j)one who grabs by the heel, supplanter). Isaac was sixty years old when Rebekah gave birth to them.

Esau Sells His Birthright

27 As the boys were growing up, Esau became skilled at hunting and was a man of the outdoors, but Jacob was the quiet type who tended to stay indoors.

27 When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field, but Jacob was a (s)peaceful man, (t)(AG)living in tents.

27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.

27 When the boys grew up, Esau became an expert hunter, an outdoorsman,(m) but Jacob was a quiet man who stayed at home.(n)

27 When the boys grew up, Esau was an able and skilled hunter, a man of the outdoors, but Jacob was a quiet and peaceful man, living in tents.

28 Isaac loved Esau, because he loved to hunt, while Rebekah loved Jacob.

28 Now Isaac loved Esau, because (u)he had (AH)a taste for game, (AI)but Rebekah loved Jacob.

28 And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.

28 Isaac loved Esau because he had a taste for wild game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.(Y)

28 Now Isaac loved [and favored] Esau, because (k)he enjoyed eating his game, but Rebekah loved [and favored] Jacob.

29 One day, while Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau happened to come in from being outdoors, and he was feeling famished.

29 When Jacob had cooked (AJ)stew, Esau came in from the field and he was (v)famished;

29 And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:

29 Once when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau came in from the field exhausted.

29 Jacob had cooked [reddish-brown lentil] stew [one day], when Esau came from the field and was famished;

30 Esau told Jacob, "Let me gobble down some of this red stuff, since I'm starving." (That's how Esau got his nickname "Edom".)

30 and Esau said to Jacob, “Please let me have a swallow of (w)that red stuff there, for I am (x)famished.” Therefore his name was called (y)Edom.

30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.

30 He said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stuff, because I’m exhausted.” That is why he was also named Edom.(o)

30 and Esau said to Jacob, “Please, let me have a quick swallow of that red stuff there, because I am exhausted and famished.” For that reason Esau was [also] called Edom (Red).

31 But Jacob responded, "Sell me your birthright. Do it now."

31 But Jacob said, “(z)First sell me your (AK)birthright.”

31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.

31 Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.”

31 Jacob answered, “First sell me your (l)birthright (the rights of a firstborn).”

32 "Look! I'm about to die," Esau replied. "What good is this birthright to me?"

32 Esau said, “Behold, I am about to die; so of what use then is the birthright to me?”

32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?

32 “Look,” said Esau, “I’m about to die, so what good is a birthright to me?”

32 Esau said, “Look, I am about to die [if I do not eat soon]; so of what use is this birthright to me?”

33 But Jacob insisted, "Swear it by an oath right now." So he swore an oath to him and sold his birthright to Jacob.

33 And Jacob said, “(aa)First swear to me”; so he swore to him, and (AL)sold his birthright to Jacob.

33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.

33 Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” So he swore to Jacob and sold his birthright to him.

33 Jacob said, “Swear [an oath] to me today [that you are selling it to me for this food]”; so he swore [an oath] to him, and sold him his birthright.

34 Then Jacob gave Esau some of his food, along with some boiled stew. So Esau ate, drank, got up, and left, after having belittled his own birthright.

34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and rose and went on his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.

34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

34 Then Jacob gave bread and lentil stew to Esau; he ate, drank, got up, and went away. So Esau despised his birthright.(Z)

34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and got up and went on his way. In this way Esau scorned his birthright.(C)
